Welcome gardeners! This week my mom and I decided to go on an impromptu trip to the Skagit Valley in Washington State for the Tulip Festival! Rows and rows of colorful tulips paint the valley. It really is an amazing sight to see! 🌷Enjoy!
“A tulip doesn’t strive to impress anyone. It doesn’t struggle to be different than a rose. It doesn’t have to. It is different. And there’s room in the garden for every flower.” - Marianne Williamson

I am from the Netherlands. This is beautiful and have just returned from a 3-week-roadtrip to your country. You live in a beautiful country! But The Keukenhof near Amsterdam is Paradise for spring flowers!!! Millions of people from all over the world come to see it. It takes you at least 4 hours. Please visit it some day and try to find the best time depending on the weather. I will join you Janey! Love ,Lia

I used to live in Mount Vernon. Enjoyed the tulips and daffodils, and they where different every year. I would go out early in the morning during the week to take photos. Much less people then. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

I’m a crazy tulip lover. Have been to the tulip festival in Ottawa Canada and also a local festival in Niagara. But after watching this I’ll have to plant more muscari. Wow that colour in waves is stunning. But, if they could only make a tulip that is squirrel and rabbit proof. 😂🇨🇦

I absolutely agree....we lived nearby this area for 20 years, and it was a seasonal must do. I felt it was a best kept secret. If you never make it to Amsterdam, you won't have missed out. Also, take a ferry ride to Cli ton on Whidbey Island and visit Christianson Nursery!

Well I think as far as tulips go Washington has Holland Michigan beat. In Holland Mi. The streets, I guess their called devil strips are planted with tulips for miles. It’s a beautiful drive. During tulip time Dutch dancers wash the streets and bands from the area schools March in the parade. My two daughters were in band many years ago and my granddaughter danced in a Dutch custom as a boy, the costumes have to be original to the Dutch heritage and dancing as a boy was much cheaper. The authentic Dutch girl costume’s with all the different layers could get quite costly. Anyway Holland’s tulip time is an event and during tulip time I either avoid driving in Holland or use the back roads.🌷💚🙃

Yes, it's been an unusually chilly, rainy and windy spring in the Skagit Valley. Many people of a certain age used to work in the tulip fields as teenagers. In the spring , they have a barn where workers wrap tulips for fresh market. In the summer, they dig the bulbs. Dusty work! The Roozen family has employed many people for decades. When they opened the Roozengarde shop and viewing grounds, the Tulip Festival really took off and became a very popular April destination. Thank you for visiting our beautiful valley.🌷🌷🌷

So gorgeous! I drove up there last Easter with my sister in law, from their place in Everett an hour or so south of there - tulips are definitely a few weeks behind this year due to the cold! Welcome to western Washington! Happy Birthday Mom! I live south of Seattle. Years ago we would leave home in the dark so we could arrive at the tulips fields to take pics in the morning light. Sometimes we were the only ones there and there were no fees for parking or entrance to the gardens. The good old days! I always order bulbs from RoozenGaarde every year and the bulbs are big and very high quality. I planted a bed with a river of muscari, aka grape hyacinth, with daffodils in the backround. Gorgeous! Yes, our bulb season is very late this year. Still waiting for tulips to bloom and even some of the specialty daffodils. The Dutch Master daffodils bloomed early as expected. One of the split corona daffodils you pointed out was Apricot Whirl, and she's a beauty. She naturalized and grew back again this year. Also waiting for the alliums and Fritillaria Persica to bloom. This sounds like a great birthday trip! Glad you could visit the beautiful Skagit Valley.

Happy Birthday to your mom. You may think that it is cold however living here for me it is great. That is why I always doing something outside so that I would not feel the brisk breeze. You may think that it is late spring however it is mid spring here in BC and I know why you think it would not be early as you are from California and there you are late spring early summer. Anyways enjoy the tulip tour.

Your mom is right about the rows being wider than they used to be. I grew up here, and as a young teen worked one summer digging bulbs - by hand! Can you believe they used to all be dug up by hand?!? That summer in the 80's, Roosengard got their first mechanical harvester, but most bulbs were still dug by kids (like me!) on their hands and knees with duct tape wrapped around fingers - tougher than any gloves. Cool wet weather delays the bloom so it's not the same time every year. And you definitely need to visit the Netherlands - Roosengard is just a small sample of a spring trip to Amsterdam. Hope you can go someday!
