I worked on that railroad in the summers of '54, '55 and '56. Skagway was where I went to high school at the now defunct, Pius X Mission. Skagway gave me the happiest time of my life! The people there were just great! Memories of their All-American hospitality will keep me always grateful!

While living in Juneau back in 2004, I worked for a glass shop named Perseverance Glass....had the opportunity to work in Skagway, we installed all new glass and entrance doors in the Wells Fargo, ended up staying a week at a bed and breakfast....while there, I had the best pizza I've had since leaving Cleveland, Ohio in 02, in my entire 46yrs on this planet, it was incredible....just thought I'd throw that out there....✌🏻🇺🇸

Love this city! My wife and I were here in 2014! I remember some of the graffitti on the rocks and a lot of those quaint shops! We went to a training camp for some of the dogs in the Iditarod Races and I flew by helicopter to tour one of the incredible glaciers! I'll tell you.. you have not ever tasted fresh water as pure and sweet as the water that trickles through the eroded channels of glacier ice! An experience that I'll remember the rest of my life! The big highlight of our Skagway journey was, of course, the magnificent White Pass train! But, we traveled the opposite direction, from its beginning in the Northern town of Fraser , traveling all the way South, to beautiful Skagway! A fantastic adventure through the Last Frontier! Don't miss it!!! The guy that posted this breathtaking video had a gorgeous, scenic day just as we did! Spectacular footage that brings back some great memories!

dodie sweeney • Please document your move on video, or photos, or even by journaling for the first year. I had some friends that actually did all 3 when they moved to Alaska in the early 1980s. Wish KZbin had been available then. Anyway, their pet project turned out to be amazing, and hopefully for generations of their families to come.

Thank you so much for posting this, I went there back in 2014. Loved every moment of it, sadly in my case. Everything was completely covered in fog. And we did the opposite way (bus first, then train). But seriously, the place is absolutely gorgeous.

@@Titan52berg We considered doing the train to Carcross but that was an all day trip and we had other plans. We were happy for the half day to Fraser and back. I lived in Fairbanks, Alaska in the 50's and made that trip by car with my parents through the Yukon.

Well done. Liked the little train and bus images moving on the map. Just returned last week and they now have a loop turnaround just inside the Canadian border so that for the short trip there is no longer a need for a passport. You do not disembark. Whereas for your Fraser round trip you had to get off the train and transfer to the bus and a passport is required.

Most ships allow plenty of time in Skagway. We did this train, a dog sled adventure and the Temsco Helicopter Glacier tour in one full day. This is at least as good, if not better than the Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge Train in Colorado. Foolish to pass this up.
@H.pylori5 жыл бұрын
We were there on 26 May 2019 and did the train to the summit. It is unbelievable and you must do at least the summit trip, and if time allows, the combined train/bus round trip. Forthe summit trip you no longer need a passport since they have just completed a spur just inside the Canadian border so that the train can easily head back down the hill. This was not present when the above video was made. If you are able to do the same trip as in the video you will need to carry your passport.
@H.pylori5 жыл бұрын
@@elli003 That was a very ambitious schedule. Our train did not leave for the summit turnaround until 10:30, and we spent the remainder of the time in town at the Natinal Park visitor center and a tour of Soapy Smith's saloon. Then a made dash to the Gold Rush cemetery for a photo of the final resting places of Reid and Smith. Thanks for your video, it helped me remember what I saw and the sequence of the mileposts.

@@H.pylori We took the White Pass Train just over the Canadian Border (Flagpoles) and returned to town. Met with our dog sled caravan, went through Dyea and Westward into the mtns. Dog sled was not on snow, but in a golf cart towed by a dog sled team for about 1 mile. Lots of fun, beautiful scenery ......... a little adventuresome for some folks........ a little rustic. LOL Just made it back to the ship in time to the Temsco (sp) Helo pad terminal. Outstanding adventure - my 4th helo tour flight of 30+ helo flights I've taken over the years. Flew to Reade (sp) Glacier, walked around w/ guides. Looked like a National Geographic scene. I'd do it again 100 times over. Skagway and Moab are my vacation domains !
