This is a commentary on a few scenes from a video of an armored knight fighting a band of brigands, based on actual historical techniques.

It's easily one of the most realistic depictions of plate armor I've seen... it actually protects the wearer, can you imagine that. :D Tempered steel that can deflect and absorb even powerful sword cuts, instead of silver painted cardboard that the hero or villain just slices wide open.

This was the genius of John Wick - stunt men are cheap. John wick was actually done on a shoestring budget; the directors cut their teeth on low-budget action movies, and so KNEW how to get the most for their money. It's not particularly realistic combat.. this dude is way too fast and unarmored guys too slow.. As a viking age reenactor I seem to recall a fighting with fully armored knights in one festival, and we were just two against one knight, and we easily put him on the ground as he couldn't fight effectively against just two light armored vikings lol Also if you will read about battle of Grunwald you will notice that there were many light armored peasants against fully equipped teutonic knights, and knights didnt just slaughter them like that lol

@@Rottensparrow If you have proper armour which is made espacaly for you, you are quite nimble and fast.If the armour doesent fit, it can hinder movement. Also it depnds on the physical condition of the fighter and his expirience. Also there are many Videos which shows the mobility of platearmour. This includes sprinting, wrestling and even shoulder rolls. So you can be quite fast in plate armor sry for my english

Adorea Olomouc is not "a dude in the backyard" they are a team of professionals and won "best action reel" at the Urban Action Showcase International Action Film Festival (New York). Not for knight of hope, though. But I agree, and to quote Metatron: "Somebody bloody hire these people when you want to make a movie about medieval times with fighting scenes".

Apart from what Jinx Head said, this was also made with the single purpose of being an excellent medieval fight scene. Movies are much bigger projects, with hundreds of people, countless scenes, shots, props, events etc to keep track of. Movies have a whole different focus. It's a "jack of all trades" situation. How is it a surprise that this is better? What would be sad is if it *wasn't* better.

Except he doesn't like the helmet. It was historical, but it was mostly used n imitation of the Corinthian helmets, due to a love for classical art, rather than for its tactical value. It's a crap helmet when compared to its contemporaries.

That always bothers me in pretty much every action movie ever. The protagonist killed 50 other henchmen, but number 51 still seems to think that whatever he's getting paid is worth the risk. And in this one there is literally no profit or benefit in continuing to fight. What do they get if they win? Just a suit of armor that won't fit them and maybe get the lady back.

I was thinking when the knight showed up in a halo of light and fog the brigands should of freaked and ran in terror thinking the Archangel Micheal just showed up to go Old Testament on them. This is the Medieval period, there are no atheists or antagonistic and all the brigands grew up being taught God will judge them.

Haha yea if the weapon isn't on a chain or a rope you can almost certainly thrust with it, it ALMOST doesn't matter what the shape at the end is if your opponent isn't wearing armor and you hit him dead on.

I do agree, that was a LOT of guys for one person to take on. However, as a knight, he's likely in much better health and physical condition than any of the brigands. He's probably well fed and rested as well, compared to a bunch of guys living in shacks in the woods. They may be malnourished and weak. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but taking that outright physical advantage into account, alongside his skill and equipment, it makes him taking on a large group alone seem a little more plausible to me.

@@mallobag Yea..... Armor like that aint that heavy. Any average person could wear it for long lengths of time without issue. I think it'd weigh around 40 to 50 pounds. My girlfriend who's 5'6, sleep deprived all the time, and never works out can lift 50 pounds in her arms. Nearly anyone could wear it as the distribution is balanced and it's not too bad to begin with.

Probably more like heat soak. Your body usually have that reaction when you over heat. Air force pilots get that too when they over heat.

It's not necessarily lethal if you don't cut a major artery, but probably not nice to have blood running into your throat while you are trying to breathe. I can tell you that being hit in the throat really hurts even if you are wearing armor, unless it's a plate neck guard.

I also suspect that the crossbow was meant to be a hunting crossbow (the brigand didn't have to use any spanning mechanism), not war crossbow.

That was my thought as well. It's effectively a medieval peashooter against plate. Though technically it didn't show him spanning the thing, even if it's obviously not a war crossbow.

Very possible. Given that random thugs would usually use what they could find, a hunting crossbow would definitely be easier to aquire and cheaper than a war crossbow. And for anyone who wasn't wearing full platearmor it would probably still be more than enough. And honestly, how often did random thugs fight a knight?

A heavy crossbow at THAT range would probably penetrate, bur why would some random robbers have a heavy war crossbow? The advantage bandits usually have is that they get to pick their victims and have the element of surprise. Against the knight, they only have intimidating numbers though.

Of the many things I liked, the bandits are choosing specific points to stab the knight not going for the Hollywood way of thinking by swinging weapons around like morons, and I also liked that the knight knew what to do in each situation

Yeah it makes sense. Also that they still lost. Sure, knowing that you need to go for the weak spots is easy. Doing that in the chaos of battle, while people are moving around you? And your target isn't just going to stand still to let you take your aim. Knowing it is one thing, putting it into action a wholy different thing. And naturally a knight would know these weak spots and at least in some form be trained how to best avoid letting enemies leverage them. SO that really is nicely done.

It's a fantasy movie because the knight is St Michael himself. Her icon of St Michael magically vanishes right before he shows up in a pillar of light, and then he hands it back to her right before disappearing back into the light.

About him being sorta superhuman, he is literally summoned by her prayers. He is clearly sent to help her, not a random knight walking around that trips on the bandit encampment. And it's still way more believable and entertaining than the best of Hollywood fight scenes.

Remember kids, if you're fighting a guy in full armor,and have him very badly outnumbered, don't bother trying to surround and swing at him. Swamp him, grab his arms, sweep his legs and get him on the ground. I actually find the rough quality helps make the fight feel more real. The knight constantly shifts stances, he doesnt go for ''clean'' cuts or smooth moves, sometimes he has to just bash a bitch. Even the axe throw, yes its an unlikely throw but its not a perfect shot, if you see it almost looks like it nearly missed with were it hits the face. He takes some damage, shows signs of exhaustion at having to fight for so long, brilliant

It does make you this tanky. Add on top of that the training people able to afford such armour almost certainly had and you would have to be suicidal to pick a fight with them in casual clothes and meagre weaponry.

Soridan I’d say it still somewhat depends on the individual’s tolerance to pain and concussions, in addition to footwork. Implication that the knight is a literal manifestation of a patron saint aside, he did take some very real damage that would most certainly rock if not disable ordinary people. Effective combat potential is still very much dependent on the person inside the armor, holding the weapon, and directing troops where command is applicable.

It makes you this tanky against blades, but it doesn't make you anywhere near this tanky versus grapples. This guy repeatedly just hurls enemies away from him and stuff despite 1) them being fresh and him already fighting for some time and 2) them having no weight and him carrying a whole harness... He should be at a significant disadvantage once you get past his weapons and are wrestling, even for just one on one let alone if they had 2+ guys piling on at once. Pinned, stab through the face, GG. Can he cut down a few people before that? Sure. Might they run away instead? Sure. But once he's in a wrestling scuffle it should have been over. Instead he gets out of it like half a dozen times. Aside from the excuse of "he's an angel, whatever"

This movie just make me want to replay to Kingdom Come: Deliverance! I want to beat people to death by halfswording with a longsword! I love how this fantasy movie use techniques inspired from real 15th century swordplay instead of those ridiculous wide slashes that we see in every Holywood medieval themed series and movies. Yes as someone who has delved in German history, there is a relatively big difference between landed kights of before the crusades and the trained and coordinated knights of the knightly orders like the teutonic order of north east germany or the knights Templar which formed after.
