To be fair to Kevin: Some people do mean the phrase "adult toy" literally. Something you wouldn't give to a child because it's either too dangerous or inappropriate, but that's actually really fun to mess around with. A lot of gun owners actually buy their guns as adult toys more so than for self-defense or hunting purposes (like good look defending yourself with a 50 cal rifle that you have to rest on something to even fire accurately). Or expensive sports cars are also a classic. And if the US of A weren't so horrendouly prude, they'd just call a sextoy a sextoy and it wouldn't be a cause of confusion.

7:28 - A friend made a gaffe while trying to talk about actions taken during a D&D combat session one time. He started trying to say "shortbow" but changed gears and said "longbow" mid-word. That's right, the mighty "sh'longbow" was born that day.
@BeingFireRetardant3 жыл бұрын
Historically, the sh'longbow is a remarkably effective, non-lethal weapon. Although it has a relatively short range, it generally only takes one shot to soothe the savage beast. It works exceptionally well against angry She-bears, and if used correctly, can induce a state of almost comatose amnesia and relative submission, for short periods of time. More of a stunning effect weapon, really. It does take a long time to reload a relaxed sh'longbow, however, so shot placement is critical. One nice feature however is the concealed nature of the weapon, often much smaller and more compact in colder climates. Often times not the most durable of weapon types, but there when you need it. The sh'longbow is easily affected by alcohol or old age, unfortunately. Through the ages it has become a largely ceremonial weapon, used to create alliances, and establish kingdoms. And if correctly deployed, to this day it can bring about great victories and lasting peace. It is simply one of the most efficient weapons ever designed for close quarters combat...

Beyond that, much of its use is shrouded in mystery. It is believed by the Ancient One's to possess the seed of life. Regardless if one is prone to belief in old superstitions, or not, it is an undeniably powerful weapon in the hands of a skilled user. It is best known for its maneuverability during flanking attacks... Perhaps the single best attribute of the sh'longbow is that for all we know of this weapon's use, there will still be more to learn, each and every time we practice the ancient art. In some cases, it wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so gaudy. But I'm perfectly fine with explicitly and exclusively decorative weapons. It's just like keeping any other piece of art in your house. But, yeah, when they're that ridiculous, the whole notion kinda goes out the window. But they can still be pretty wild and obviously not usable, but still be visually appealing display pieces. . It's also just like...well...EVERY sci-fi ship there has ever been. Many are great art pieces as sculptures...but they are, without exception, godawful ships. But, I still don't fault anyone for owning the little models and what not...because some of them are visually very appealing.
@TrueMentorGuidingMoonlight3 жыл бұрын
Tangent: That actually raises a good question about historically gaudy aesthetics. I’ve seen museum pieces of royally owned armors and swords that were often gilded or overly elaborately decorated… yet were supposedly used in practical situations like on the battlefield or defending oneself during travelling. I would’ve actually assumed all of those gaudy artifacts were “ceremonial”, but I was surprised by how bougie noblemen were about their stuff for battlefield use. I would greatly appreciate a video that covers the line between what was considered actually-ceremonial versus gaudy-but-practical.

When I was a kid, my uncle gave me a katana when he moved away. I had no concept of weapon design or anything, I was just losing my shit because my uncle gave me a fucking sword. In retrospect, it was the most wall-hanging sword I've ever seen. I have no idea how sharp the blade was, but the handle was made out of, like...ceramic? Some ultra-hard material I imagine would destroy your hand (and itself) on impact. More importantly, the handle was sculpted and painted to look like a dragon. This did admittedly look pretty cool (if tacky), but it had a spine of scales that SPIRALED around the grip, ensuring that there was NO comfortable way to hold it at all. It was the least ergonomic thing I've ever seen. I hope I still have it back at my parents' place.
