In post apocalyptic scenarios one of the main issues with using guns is that you have ammo, another main issue is going in quietly. If someone managed make a modern firearm function this way, it could be appealing to the people with Flintlock Cutlery paranoia, and appealing to people that are both gun nuts and sword enthusiasts like the creator of this video. Time to go watch the video of him going over Dungeons & Dragons weapons

Pole axes actually started out as simple pole axes, with no spear tip or hammer included. Hammers were done the same way. The spear-axe-hammer combination took three of those weapons, and combined them in a way that didn't change any of the handling characteristics. If you wanted a spear, then wield your weapon the same exact way that you would wield a spear. If you wanted a pole axe, then wield your weapon the same exact way that you would wield a pole axe. If you wanted a war hammer, then wield your weapon the same exact way that you'd wield a war hammer. It was three weapons in one, true, but the magic is that none of the handling characteristics were changed.

I like how all early designs for these gunblades and axes are all aimed at just like, having the option to shoot on a melee weapon, it's cool how this was more common back then, but it's the complete reverse of the concept of bayonets, and having melee weapons on firearms.
@yamiyomizuki6 жыл бұрын
That might be because these are more self defense weapons than battlefield designs, from a self defense standpoint a pistol is not a very good close combat weapon, and a one shot pistol is a terrible close combat weapon, blades are vastly preferable for self defense, but having the long range option is still handy.

The musket rest sword thing makes complete sense if you look at it as primarily a musket rest. You stab it into the ground, so you can rest your musket on it. But suddenly, the enemy enters the melee way faster than expected. You need a weapon right now. Well, you can pull your musket rest out of the ground and fight with it. It's not ideal, but it will do in a hurry.
@weldonwin6 жыл бұрын
I initially thought maybe this was for a gentleman out hunting. He could use it to rest his hunting rifle on and use the sword or hammer to finish off wounded game
@cerebraldreams47386 жыл бұрын
Especially if you also have a bayonet, given that musketmen didn't typically have shields on hand.
@valentinmitterbauer41966 жыл бұрын
So the thing was this: We are not talking about this elegant, thin muskets from the 1700s, we're talking about the half- arquebuse/ half- musket- in- devlopment- things of Thirty Years' War in the early 1600s. The musket rest wasn't really optional at this time, but necessary to have a somehow aimable weapon at all. It also wasn't a "gentleman's hunting weapon" at that time too, since it was unreliable and completely useless not even in rainy, but also foggy weather. Also it was much louder than modern guns and stank like a firework rocket, rendering it even more unfitting for hunting. In my opinion, this combi- weapon was a great way to loose weight, since rest and side- arm are one now. In my personal opinion i would just go with the rest- warhammer, since swords, if they aren't as long as a man, trend to loose against armoured soldiers of that time and if you really needed something pointy, you still have the bajonett on your boomstick.

Hello, for the german axe-gun mystery, it's maybe a piece made by an apprentice at the end of his studies. It's a tradition for artmakers (blacksmiths, jewellers, painters,scupters, ...) to do a piece like this, which is not fit for a fight or battlefield but who shows all the abilities of the new master. They're also called "masterpiece"... This axe-gun shows than the maker was master in blacksmithing for the axe and axe handle AND all the fine work of the gunmaker. But all of this is only my thought about and maybe I'm full wrong.

That’s not rifling on the katar. If you could examine it up close, you’d find the «rifling» only extends a few mm into the barrel. This was very common on pocket pistols and on various combination gun/blade weapons. What looks like rifling is actually the equivalent of a modern torx screw head: the gun would have originally sold with a special wrench or key that fits the false rifling for unscrewing the barrel from the receiver. These are not loaded through the muzzle, instead you unscrew the barrels and load them from the chamber end before screwing them back onto the receiver. Makes sense when there’s a sharp blade right next to where you’d otherwise have to place your hand if using a ramrod. This system also has a ballistical advantage in these short barrels. It allows you to use a bullet slightly larger than the bore diameter; these barrels are bored a bit wider at the chamber end specifically for this purpose. The oversized bullet gets squeezed down to fit the bore by the force of the gunpowder exploding, briefly acting as a bore obstruction so chamber pressure increases dramatically. This makes for higher velocity than would otherwise be possible with black powder in such short barrels, which is why this was often done with pocket pistols.

I think many of those combo firearms were made by those gunsmiths just to prove that they could and to show off their craftsmanship, much like the Kolibri pistol or miniaturized versions of normal sized firearms. It shows that you have the ability scale something way down without sacrificing quality, or to cram a functional gun into something that was never intended to house one in the first place while still technically being useful as a fork and knife or warhammer or what have you.

In general, the more jobs a tool can do, the less well it will do each job. On the other hand, there is something to be said for the ingenuity of the human mind. It all comes down to whether or not the total operational advantage is greater than the sum of individual performance of each function. That's why things like the bayonet and the Swiss Army knife were so successful, and the things featured in this video weren't. That being said, my original Leatherman PST has been the single most useful tool I have ever owned. I have carried it nearly every day for 16 years, and it is still going strong. Though there are more advanced versions available today, I have absolutely no plans to upgrade or replace it.
