@coreywilson34935 жыл бұрын
It's simply the most efficient way to have a blade attached to a gun. Anything more and you start getting into "more dangerous to the user than the enemy" territory. This is because, outside of combat, it's simply not efficient or practical to hold the gun in any ready position. Instead, you have it shoulder-slung (in the case of rifles or shotguns) or holstered (in the case of handguns). When you take that into account, it's easy to see why it simply doesn't work. The bayonet works because it can easily be kept from accidentally hitting the bearer's body anywhere, and it can easily be removed.

If all else fails, stab it into them, and then start shooting. No recoil when it's braced in their right kidney.
@cervod25294 жыл бұрын
I see where you are coming from if you measured out the perfect length blade so that it is balanced better than it would be otherwise would be amazing, however most modern guns are balanced as best as possible and the blade would be so small that it would be a gun knife at that point, because remember you can have too little weight on the front to make recoil worse, but you can also have too much

Biggest reason there's not more "gunblades": Recoil. Recoil on firearms, particularly large bore or caliber pistols or rifles from earlier periods of time, is tremendous. Normally recoil isn't such a big deal, and at most can lead to bad bruises or broken wrists with improper handling of the gun... but if you suddenly add a sharp blade almost as big or bigger than the gun itself, recoil suddenly becomes a much more dangerous thing. Probably one of the reasons a gun "sword" was never designed at the hilt like Shad displayed is because the recoil from the shot would send the blade right back into your shoulder... or face.
@Shammoria3 жыл бұрын
Same reason vertical sward is a bad idea, gun kicks, sword ends up in shooters head. Having the sword in the lateral of the gun barrel could have actually prevented kick as it would have to lift the blade not just the gun
@Paveway-chan3 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't you have to strap a six-pounder to the sword for recoil to be that bad? If the recoil of a firearm was so bad that it risked smacking you in the face with the weapon, I doubt pistols would have become famous either. And having a sword attached to the firearm adds to its weight, which will reduce the recoil. So why would a gunsword be made unusable because the recoil can supposedly cut your nose off or whatever?
@Delvien3 жыл бұрын
Recoil on these things wouldn't be that bad. Most of them are black powder, black powder burns much slower then modern gunpowder therefore don't generate as much force back into the shooter. I doubt the calibers of these weapons would be very large since they still have to operate like a regular sword and couldn't have an excessively long barrel to house and burn enough powder to get a large ball moving at a reasonable velocity. Most of these weapons also seem to have a very unique advantage over standard pistols, the barrel/chamber of the pistols are almost directly in line with the hilt meaning that much of the recoil would simply travel backwards and not pivot downwards like on modern firearms where the barrel/chamber is typically situated above the shooters hands. Weight out on the front of the weapon from the blade would have also helped keep the muzzle down but I only see that being useful on the gun knives shown in the video. If I had to argue reasons why few of them existed it would be cost and practicality. These things would mostly be for personal protection but they would be prohibitively expensive, if you could afford one of these swords you could hire a couple of bodyguards. As a weapon of war they would also be useless.
@Anomalocaria3 жыл бұрын
"if you suddenly add a sharp blade almost as big or bigger than the gun itself, recoil suddenly becomes a much more dangerous thing." the opposite would be true. the more mass you have on a firearm, the less apparent recoil you're going to experience. the heavier a firearm is, more energy is required to put it in motion. more mass, more inertia. so if you think about how you would calculate the amount of force required to move a stationary floating object in a vacuum (just so we can ignore things like static friction and air resistance), you'd use Newton's second law, F = ma, and you'd find that the amount of force required is proportional to the object's mass. if you throw a huge steel blade onto a black powder gun with a six (or less) inch barrel like most of the examples shown, i doubt you'd feel much recoil at all. it's not just mass, though. the closer the center of balance is to the muzzle, the less muzzle rise you're going to experience. the reason muzzle flip occurs in the first place is because the barrel of the firearm is generally always situated _above_ your arm - it's why they always flip up and they never flip down. there are a few kinds of firearms, the Chiappa Rhino comes to mind, that sort of take advantage of this. they lowered the bore axis as much as they could - the barrel is much closer to the center radial/ulnar axis of your arm, which makes the whole system less inclined to flip up and more inclined to travel straight back into your arm (and you can actually see that a lot of these gunblades have a similar design). this means more apparent recoil - but again, these weapons have much more mass than a regular pistol of the time. there are a couple of other ways to manage muzzle flip though - one of them is to simply make the firearm heavier towards the muzzle. in other words - even if the recoil was pretty nasty for whatever reason - these gunblade designs aren't going to flip out of your hand and wind up in your throat or whatever. having a gun perpendicular to the blade - yeah, that shit's probably going to come right back into your face. i think the only reason we don't see any evidence of that design is because that's just not how firearms were made and held at the time. the handles were still angled down, but they were still much more in-line with the barrel than a lot of modern handguns - like the way we still make a lot of rifles and shotguns. if i had to guess why gunblades weren't more popular, i'd guess it's probably just a colossal pain in the ass to repair/replace. swords break a lot, man. guns can take a lot of internal abuse, but they're generally not designed to smack things with. these things would've been wildly expensive novelty items that their owners would likely have been reluctant to swing around. now they not only have to worry about damaging the blade, but all of the little moving parts in the gun as well.
@Crusader65903 жыл бұрын
Actually making a heavier gun would have less recoil, it would only be increased if you made the gun lighter or added more powder. So no, your entire premise is wrong.
@DamonNomad824 жыл бұрын
I realize this is an old video, and the odds of my comment being read by Shad are low, but I just wanted to say that I have encountered one example of a sword/gun combo that has a blade aligned perpendicularly to the gun barrel. @@rocketchips2164 I mean you're definitely completely correct that it would be massively top-heavy. It just wouldn't produce enough for for you to stab yourself, or at least not do any appreciable damage. It would require ridiculous amounts of force coming out of the firearm. If you look at the recoil of even modern firearms which have a ton of power compared to older breach loading firearms, the recoil is fairly negligible until you start getting to firearm calibers higher than a certain range. Even those I think you might nick yourself but you wouldn't be pulling the weapon out of your body because it imparted so much recoil that you skewered yourself. For reference, here's a video of formerly famous gun youtube channel guy shooting a S&W .500 magnum. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKfRoYimgsp3btU That's an extremely powerful handgun. @1:45 is around where he shoots it. Notice the recoil is pretty substantial, yet the gun barrel only really rises a few inches. From what I've discovered, historical gun-swords had the following problems: 1) Bad balance, as you noted. 2) Cleanliness; the blood and viscera the blade got caked in would end up clogging up the gun barrel, and the weapon would be either dangerous or completely unable to fire. 3) Accuracy; the short barrels and non-existent sights ensured that you pretty much couldn't aim properly with them, and you certainly couldn't hit a target that was much further away than the tip of the sword (Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag illustrates this quite nicely, as the main character has to actually stab his target before he fires in order to hit them.) Mounting the gun as one of the quill-ens would not solve this problem, as you would have to bring the sword guard up to your eye level to aim, even if the blade is thin enough to not obstruct the actual sights. Using modern, magazine-fed firearms for a gun sword would be utterly inadvisable because the mechanisms that allow for a magazine feed are surprisingly delicate. It's the reason that using a pistol as a club like the old flint-locks and their contemporaries were is discouraged in the military and police forces. Amusingly, Henry VIII (if I remember correctly) carried a related weapon integrating three gun barrels into the shaft of a mace.

There are two schools of thought, and this is the reason of the controversy here in the US. It's also pretty wild to me that having a fake handgun is regulated like so. Because rather than use leathal force they could easily beanbag your ass to the ground if you get stupid. I also understand the cops point of veiw where you're looking down the barrel of a gun you don't know if it's real. Been there, done that. Beat him with his own very real weapon. A military M4 carbine. (guns are for civilians, weapons can be guns, guns are not always weapons. Squares are rectangles, rectangles are not always squares concept) Personally I'd rather be armed and ready to take out a threat to people around me, my nation, and myself. I do also have some amount of rifle training thanks to the Army. I'm no combat veteran yet, but I'm also more experienced than many other people. Frankly I believe you should have to take a course to own a firearm, unless you have a military or police background. *ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS* with regards to your question about gun swords being tiring, since you couldn't grab the blade without having your hand in line with the muzzle flash, it probably would be. especially when you consider that you would have to aim for a longer period of time due to the lack of sights. also the configuration of the gun sword functioning as a quillon would cause any misfire to go horizontally where it might hit someone. finally (and shad, if you read this far you're awesome), the reason why we don't use a larger blade for a bayonet is that we use them for stabbing, and anything over 6 inches is over penetration. plus we greatly value a low weight rifle since it allows you to turn it more quickly in response to a threat (and we already carry a lot of equipment).
@MrMonkeybat6 жыл бұрын
Most sword belts hang the sword at about a 45 degree angle. So a quillon barrel should be pointing at the ground just as much as the blade barrel gun swords. The symmetrical double barrel design would of course have the other barrel pointed at your armpit and the sky. So if you want double barrel gun quillons maybe better to have them both pointing the same direction with triggers in the same place like a more typical double barrel pistol, and bull puped with the midpoint of the barrel over the blade for better balance.
@murphsmodels88536 жыл бұрын
One downside I see to a quillion mounted gun is recoil. Guns tend to recoil in an upwards direction, which would be aggravated by the weight of the blade above it. The gun/sword recoiling upwards would translate to the blade swinging down towards your own head.
@MrMonkeybat6 жыл бұрын
That is why prefer the asymmetrical design with a single edged blade. Can also be more comfortably half sworded to help manage recoil. So the best grip might be a handlebar grip kinda gangsta style.
@boxfoxreyes99506 жыл бұрын

The Socket Bayonette started in the mid 1600’s, before that daggers were made whose handles fit into the muskets bore, it gave the musketeers the ability to still have a spear but until the socket Bayonette appeared reloading was a problem, not to mention a successful thrust could result in your Bayonette getting lodged in your foe .
@Sparten4592 жыл бұрын
@@MGlBlaze You'd be surprised by how long some Bayonets get: I've seen Winchester "Muskets" (lever actions with 30" barrels, full length hand guards, and bayonet mounts) that have a saber attached to the front, and based on proportions, I'd say the saber's entire length is around 25", so you're practically holding a polearm of sorts that also happens to have 17 rounds of 44-40 (44 WCF).

Personally I think a pistol is already difficult to aim. Without a knife the “standard” would be shooting a man size target maybe 2 foot by 2 foot at 21 feet. That’s really not that far. Look I’m fairly experienced with fire arms and at 21 feet I average about a 10 inch shot group. Hang a bulky knife on it and I really think it would hinder performance greatly. Now add a knife to a rifle isn’t a big deal your supporting a rifle with 2 hands and a shoulder and the sights a greater distance apart improving accuracy significantly. In short a knife on a pistol imho is a novelty and not practical. A bayonet on a rifle is much more practical.

A _giant_ sniper-scythe. To be fair to this 15-year-old (from a fantasy setting), she often does a blade-plant to help aim, and she uses the recoil from her shots to enhance her swings. And _Crescent Rose_ isn't even the most fantastical weapon in the series. On Team RWBY alone both _Myrtenaster_ and _Gambol Shroud_ are more implausible. Especially since _Myrtenaster_ basically shoots magic bullets instead of more realistic ones. But _Gambol Shroud_ 's blade folds up around the barrel, and Blake can somehow fire it while slinging it around on its ribbon to use the recoil and slice-and-dice. And then there's Nora's grenade hammer.

Blake uses Dust Bullets Yang uses Dust shotgun shells. The difference is that Weiss's weapon, upon further examination is using the powdered form of Dust, and is using what appears to be an air pressure based release form, like Spray paint or aerosol cans. Also, in terms of building their weapons IRL and using them, Ren and Weiss win. I have a (partly, Dust is still fake, so can't use that) Myrtenaster in real life, it functions perfectly well as a rapier, and even has a little spinning piece like the chamber in the show. Ren's weapons are actually buildable, you just have to make the blades be 3 smaller pieces that would extend out into 1 blade. There is a +1 hour video where a REAL rocket scientist who actually understands the ballistics and engineering behind how to build these weapons covers it.

The bayonet affects the accuracy of the rifle by interfering with the air stream and by Toba degree, pulling on the front of the rifle. Along with getting caught on stuff when trying to maneuver around a building or vehicle. No so much a issue with musket line fighting. But when you want to take aim at a target a thousand yards away, that becomes an issue. A secondary note, it could also interfere with a suppressor.

the main issue they had with gun swords, or combining a gun with any melee weapon, is that guns were (and still are) finely tuned precision instruments, lotta little moving parts riveted together, and frequently striking objects with a gun isn't good for it. could end up jamming things or knocking things loose, you could end up with just a sword with a broken gun attached to it.

I would think weight would be a big issue from the sword perspective. Handguns tend to weight as much as or more than swords do on their own, so combining them gives you a single handed sword that's 2x heavier than it should be. It would lose against someone using a sword, loaded gun, or bayonet. Attaching a smallsword blade wouldn't really fix this, since the blade is too thin to oppose warswords or especially bayonets very well. Adding this to the difficulty aiming the gun, you end up with a weapon that only reliably wins against someone who is using a sword in ranged combat, or an unloaded pistol close combat, but is more convenient to manage than a sword and pistol seperately. There's a place for it certainly, but it's not a clear winner by any means.
@farmerboy9166 жыл бұрын
Sammy Jones Everything about this comment except that it is more convenient to manage than just two seperate weapons. It'd seem the opposite to me, both being nimbler individually, both requiring one hand, and the pistol turning into a club/ parrying stick once I shot it. And of course if needed only one would have to be drawn
@sammyjones67306 жыл бұрын
Unless someone can fence or shoot left-handed, they have to spend about a second swapping their pistol out of their dominant hand after shooting. Admittedly, I don't think most soldiers would frequently be in situations where the gunsword's faster swapping would outweigh its other, more universal combat limitations. Faster swapping isn't the only handling advantage though. These others might actually be more useful: -Sailors and dragoons would have a free hand to pull ropes or control a horse without sacrificing melee or ranged capabilities -A soldier wouldn't have to put down their melee weapon while reloading -For soldiers already carrying a musket as their primary weapon, they don't have to pick which secondary weapon to use in their dominant hand after shooting the musket. They could also easily carry both weapons in both hands without having to holster anything, if the situation required it. However, musketeers are better served by pistols and bayonets as secondary weapons in any case.

If I remember correctly: the flintlock part of the weapon was meant to be used in close range since it was generally not very accurate even when aimed. Using it as an element of surprise you can quickly dispatch of one enemy before getting into a sword fight with the other. If I had to guess why blades and firearms aren't more often combined into one weapon has more to do with durability than anything else. You can have a pretty durable knife and a pretty durable pistol, both can put up with a fair amount of hard use and abuse, from a military perspective. But when you combine the two, you now have something a lot more fragile and less reliable. It just doesn't seem like a combat worthy concept.

I was going to say. The gun-spear came into vogue as the bayoneted musket or rifle. Rifle plus long knife = melee weapon like a spear, with a pretty heavy butt. At any rate, the first bayonets were stuck in the barrel of the single-shot thing you just fired, preventing further firing. Since it took a bit to reload, and you were in melee if you needed the bayonet, this wasn't an issue. Later, the bayonets were added underneath, and we still see them in use. 7" blade or 9" blade, for the M-7 or the M-9. In 1941, some bayonets were quite long. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayonet#/media/File:The_British_Army_in_Britain,_1941_H10633.jpg
@absalomdraconis6 жыл бұрын
Marika Fragen : Seconded. I feel that the real melee-gun combo to be desired was indeed the gun-polearm (due to long-weapons being reliably the most army-practical primary weapons), and since the simple spear was the "best" due to the relative ease of use, the simple optimization of using a metal gun barrel instead of _additionally_ having a wooden pole leaves you with a long-gun with a musket at the end. I suspect that knife-guns were popular more for sailors worried over pirates (they used knives for utility work) and people spending lots of time in the backwoods where you might worry about being attacked by a bear or something. Gun-swords could really only have seemed practical for an officer of a unit, but muskets were so inaccurate that a few paces were enough to make getting hit by one an act of God: one of the biggest reasons duelling ended in America is that pistols became so accurate that hitting was a matter of _skill_ instead of chance, but by my understanding virtually every gun-sword dates to _before_ pistols became that accurate. For all practical purposes, the gun of a gun-sword would only have been practical for shooting at enemies already engaged in hand-to-hand with your own soldiers.

I'd say that the reason you wouldn't want a gunsword with the gun being part of the quillion is quite simple. If you're holding it with one hand, bring it up and aim to get a sight picture...the second you pull the trigger and you're not used to the recoil the blade will come right back and cleave into your face...or rather right down on top of your skull.
@monarchtherapsidsinostran91256 жыл бұрын
Woad Samurai it really won't unless your pistol is shooting over 50 caliber. The weight of the gun is effectively doubled if not more because of the sword. So recoil would be laughable if a 9mm cartridge is used. Which btw already is very controllable. The weight would make it probably not jump up if at all to be honest depending on the round. After all the Japanese had an interesting officer sword, and nambu pistol combo. Id like to see that fire to confirm my theory.
@erlandjohansen71956 жыл бұрын
MonarchTherapsids Inostran you need to remember that the point of balance here will be far above the slide, a bit like having an enormously high bore axis. Controlling the recoil on a gun like that would most likely be very difficult.

6:20 I am a federally licensed gun instructor and expert level shooting coach; at some point I can explain the good, bad and ugly about what you propose here with a slide action semi-auto pistol, hybridized with a sword or knife. For references, pistol bayonets do exist, which gives the pistol a knife, and it does increase the front end. Making it a little more weighty at the front, but one interesting thing is that the extra weight to the front actually counteracts the muzzle jump expected of firearms, by literally holding down the barrel by extra weight. A gun sword would be less likely to do a muzzle-jump.
@joshuajacobsen20466 жыл бұрын
One problem with using the gun barrel as the quillen of the cross guard is that it could damage the gun barrel when blocking sword strikes, which could cause the gun to explode the next time it was fired, which is bad. Unless the barrel was reinforced on the top, which would make it heavier and you would still have the problem of recoil launching the blade into your head, as others have said.

I have a long barrel revolver, too, and you're right - the longer barrel might even be more precise because the extra mass damps out smaller movements. But, it also slows down drawing and coarse aiming - maybe that plays a part in it.
@LUCIAN80166 жыл бұрын
The main problem with combined weapons is that the gun added to the sword causes it to be heavier in the direction of the handle and heavier in general. With the same amount of steel, you could do a much larger and more effective sword. Adding a sword or blade to the gun causes it to become heavier towards the barrel, and heavier in general.. This makes it more difficult to aim and shoot effectively. With the same amount of steel, you could do a pistol with a longer barrel of a larger caliber Conclusion is add a very small pistol to sword or add a very small blade to the gun. When swords and blades deal better damage than the primitive pistol, it is better to treat it as a base and possibly add a small amount of shooting in the form of a small gun or pepperbox. Since firearms deal greater damage from the sword it is better to treat it as a base and possibly add a small amount of stabbing and cutting in the form of a bayonet

Combined weapon works well when it comes to surprise the opponent. Nobody expects you to shoot with a knife Try to skin the deer with a knifeguns or chop wood with shotgunaxes. The combination of knife and gun fits when your only job is to kill and fight and do not use knives for anything else. Similar to the combination of shotgun and ax. People prefer to have a good knife to cut and a good gun to shoot instead of a gun that you can do both together but a little worse than separately.

I think the recoil effect would be more unwieldy than dangerous. The extra mass on top would resist recoil. But it would also make the recoil you did receive harder to manage.
