An example of a "true" bastard sword / hand-and-a-half sword

The term longsword (or "long sword") is often incorrectly applied to one-handed arming swords (also called knightly sword or riding sword) in video games and pen & paper RPGs. And then there is confusion about what a "bastard sword" or "hand-and-a-half sword" is.
So in an attempt to clarify the terms I show a good example of a "true" bastard sword in this video, with a distinctive handle length and shape as well as overall size that makes it sort of a hybrid between a longsword and an arming sword.
Also included is a brief comparison to a greatsword, sometimes called a "true" two-handed sword or Zweihander.
Arms & Armor's reproduction of a mid/late 15th century English sword, shown in this video:

A bastard sword is also versatile; you can use your offhand for a shield etc. as Skallagrim noted, but you could also change grips depending on the situation. Go in with a shield, and it gets broken or stuck or what-have-you? 2H time. Go in 2H, then find a shield or need to grapple? 1H time. Need to deliver a more powerful blow? Drop your shield and grab the sword with both hands. etc.

I gotta say, the Bastard sword is one of my favorites, just because you get that range of options for its use. You can go two handed, sword and shield, sword and buckler, use it while on horseback, and probably some other things not mentioned. So it gives you a lot of adaptability. And adaptability can be a powerful tool.

One thing that I feel needs to be mentioned about using a bastard sword in one hand; you have really huge reach compared to two hands, it was extremely effective to switch the grip and usage during a fight as it was not only a suprising element because of the sudden technique change but you also - out of nowhere - get a nice reach advantage. Which is great. Anyway, Thanks for the great stuff you post, Skall, you've learned me much. I really do hope you are getting better day by day (from the accident), good luck to you.

loved the video mate and I agree with everything you say as demonstrated here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJOVdKmalMage8U SO A QUESTION! I often wonder why a person would choose to use a Bastard Sword with a shield over an Arming Sword with a shield. To me it's kind of redundant. Yes there's the reach factor but it really isn't much (as shown in your video), so then why?
@juancholo7502
@juancholo7502 6 жыл бұрын
I believe the choice of a Bastard Sword over an Arming Sword comes down to versatility. If you might come under ranged attacks from bows, the Bastard Sword gives you the ability to use a shield in your off hand. If your shield becomes too damaged or lost, you can use the Bastard Sword as a Long Sword. Instead of carrying 2 different swords you only need to carry one. It might not be as effective as using a sword of the proper type, but it would cut down on encumbrance.

A bastard sword is what you would choose if you trained in both longsword and shield and sword techniques and your main kit is shield and sword. If you lose your shield on the battlefield or at camp and you are stirring the cooking pot and your shield is at your tent and your camp gets attacked you can properly use longsword techniques and on the other side of that it isn't awkward when using with the shield. If you just train in sword and board you wouldn't get a bastard sword and if you train only in longsword you wouldn't get one either, but if you train in both it is the most practical.

It makes (kind of) sense to call the bastard sword, a "bastard sword". The arming sword (or the short-sword), is a "true" short sword in its own right, with shorter blade and handle. Same goes for the long-sword here, its a true longsword with longer handle and blade length. While a bastard sword, is not a "true" long or short-sword. It is a bastard, not a thoroughbred in the long-sword or short-sword bloodlines. Kinda cool.
@JustGrowingUp84
@JustGrowingUp84 9 жыл бұрын
Bendik Eidshaug But a "true" short sword would be the roman gladius, or an ancient european bronze sword, both of which are noticeably shorter than an arming sword. Hell, some ancient bronze swords are classified by archeologists as rapiers, despite being in size closer to daggers. It's all silly modern lexicology, due to our need to classify stuff. Lindybeige uploaded earlier today a video on polearms, showing how silly our need to categorize stuff is.
@JustGrowingUp84
@JustGrowingUp84 9 жыл бұрын
***** That's how I also see them. Yet, they are noticeably bigger and heavier than daggers, and are also used differently. Just goes to show how easy it would be to make a weird classification.
@jimheaton9503
@jimheaton9503 9 жыл бұрын
Zombigotron Not strictly, if I remember correctly. George Silver used the term short sword to distinguish a normal backsword (ie 1h backsword at his period) from a rapier. I think shortsword=gladius or similar may be another D&Dism...
@JustGrowingUp84
@JustGrowingUp84 9 жыл бұрын
Jim Heaton Well, there you go, it all depends on context and frame of reference, there are no universal definitions. Silver calls a backsword a "short sword", even though it's not a actual "short" sword, but because it is shorter than a rapier. Medieval manuals call longswords such, because they are longer than one handed swords. And what about viking swords, and frankish swords, and germanic and anglo-saxon swords? I agree about the D&D part, but my personal suspicion is that we, the modern people, try to impose a false classification system, simply for our convenience - because it's easier to throw swords into common bags, but this poses the danger of ignoring important details. For example: many late viking swords look quite similar to early arming swords, but they are actually quite different and are used quite differently.
@jimheaton9503
@jimheaton9503 9 жыл бұрын
True. I think the idolisation of strict taxonomy is a modern(ish) thing - post Enlightenment thinking. Silver was pretty clear that the perfect length for a sword was measured from the physical stature of the wielder (which this thread amazingly hasn't touched on yet...)

***** It depends on school, i presume. Some say that the rapier/dagger combo is best (rapier for longer reach, dagger for parrying and closer encounters, when it's too late and back up really long rapier, as it's mostly stabber, and not a good cutter), whlie others might say that sword/buckler are better. First combo is optimised for offence with bits of defence, second is the other way around (talking about the offhand, not the sword itself)
@nathanbrown8680
@nathanbrown8680 9 жыл бұрын
***** The existence of parrying daggers that aren't really easier to carry than bucklers would seem to be proof that isn't strictly true. Big shields are great, but if bucklers were strictly superior to daggers the specialized daggers wouldn't exist.

CamoCam0 There are some of both. Some swiss used flaberge great swords. Some moro kriss were definitely used, but the shapes are definitely for mystical decorative purposes. Some people will say that the wavy shape gives you a longer effective cutting edge per blade length, but I don't really buy that it is a meaningful advantage, vs more length per weight.
@francescosirotti8178

You can find a wavy edge even on some pole arms, it wasn't that rare. I think it's a psicological advantage (your weapon looks more intimidating), and I don't think it matters that much. But I guess a wavy edge may act a bit like a saw edge without being wider,inflicting a larger wound... I don't think it was a major advantage, but sure it looks cool!

Ok, I dont have any knowledge on this, but surely a wavy edged blade would be easier to pull out of an enemy once thrust into? As far as i understand, the early stages of rigour mortis set in almost immediatly. Therefore, a blade with a wavy edge would create a thrust wound greater in size then the actual blade, making it easier to pull out. This is literally just speculation, if im right I guess im a genius ha

One of the things I was really happy about in 5th edition d and d is that they removed bastard sword from the weapons list. And a longsword is still a sword you can use in one or two hands. It used to be a bastard sword was a sword that you could only use in two hands unless you had exotic weapon proficiency. And on the weapon graph it looked like a bastard sword was claymore sized and a longsword was a regular longsword. Now there's no weapon graph and it's up to your imagination.

+Froggy711 Dunno the name for it but those grips you'll most commonly on swords we call "great swords". They're there to let you grip above the crossguard because great swords are very long (extremely so), so when you eventually fought your way into the enemy formation your enemies would likely be too close together to effective swing your giant sword, so you'd grab that handle above the crossguard to half-sword, or turn your giant sword into a makeshift spear.

Bacon Fish I prefer the going to fast down the stairs killing method or the car crashing combination even though they also get beaten by the non pointy seatbelt and/or the careful observation tactic. I also did not consider bullet shooting weapons, sniper rifles and weapons of mass destruction or Wolverine's claws, so the shield and sword combination can be considered optimal and maybe that is why it was used for thousands of years
