Very nice video as always! I LOVED the part when you actually show how the combat with two weapons is done, showing that both sides of the body can be used simultaneously. On the "shield being a hinderance" thing, I don't really have anything against what you said and the way you explained it, your point is definitely valid, but Matt Patt said that "because of its unique benefits, Japanese armour made shields more of a hinderance than a defensive boost" So with that statement in mind, I still think a shield is not "MORE of a hinderance THAN a defensive boost", to me it's a defensive boost with some hinderance, as you have perfectly pointed out here. Just my opinion of course :) Thank you for the video, and keep up the good work! I'm always looking forward to your uploads.

@@vanivanov9571 Yes there are definitely other factors, for example the fact that samurai were mainly archers/gunners. A samurai is infact an inbetween a knight and an archer if you think about it. Really good video, lots of great points made here & I really appreciate that there are ppl who have such a deep interest in historical combat weaponry & techniques. One aspect I've noticed many don't have a complete grasp on though is the mindset & the chaos during an engagement. It's more intense than anything else you can ever experience & cannot be replicated. It's a cauldron of terror, ecstasy, rage, focus & much more, all at levels many will never experience (and I pray they never do) swirling around chaoticly. It's far better than your 1st nut & way more terrifying than when you 1st realized you will die one day & my words don't do it justice. The reason I bring this up is just to clarify something regarding the dual welding. If our line has broken & I have a serious shield malfunction or lose my shield during close quarters hand to hand engagements, as soon as I see a probably small & likely rare opportunity I am grabbing ANYTHING laying near me w/out any hesitation. Yes a shield is ideal & top goal but choice isn't available so I'd take a downed ally's or enemy's weapon automatically, & "automatically" is probably the best word to explain it. Hell I'd pick up a helmet or a branch till a better opportunity showed itself. It'd be an automatic action, ecspecially when you've trained & had combat experience using a shield in your off hand. You would feel very "naked" & vulnerable without something to replace it unless trained otherwise & feeling vulnerable during an engagement... it makes me sick just thinking about it. An exception to this could be if your squad was still maintained it's line. Then you will feel safe enough & have the time to step back & grab an available shield. If there is none, an axe or sword will have to do. This makes me very curious on the durability of Viking shields now, lol. But great video, you certainly have a wealth of knowledge you've gathered & I enjoyed it. Keep it up!

Your mention of some of the graphic combat scenes reminds me of the French "Song of Roland" (_Chanson de Roland_), where you can read about devout Christian Frenchmen fighting the "treacherous heathens" and guts spilling, eyeballs out of their eyesockets, people ripped apart, entirely pierced by lances and all of this despite the combattants explicitly described as wearing mail halberks and helmets (who also get smashed by sword blows that sometimes also smash the skull and brains underneath). The main hero, Roland, blows a war horn to call for help Charles the Great's main army which causes a massive internal bleeding and he dies from that (not without slaughtering a good deal of heathens despite his injury). So yes, they had some pretty OP fictional stuff back then, but that still doesn't make it true or realistic.
