@@ForeverDegenerate Slight correction, the concept of accuracy not mattering with shotguns is a video game-ism, in video games, shotguns have incredibly short range and very high pellet spread, but IRL, it's quite the opposite. That's not to say shotguns are long range, 'cause they're not, not unless you're using slugs, at least, but they have much more range than video games would have you believe. Also, being guaranteed a hit means considerably less IRL, there are hundreds of cases of people being shot 20+ times with a handgun and they're still able to stand. Granted, that's with handguns, rifles and shotguns would generally have more stopping power, but the point still stands.

@@davedave8986 Spear is the best formation weapon, though what's the "best" weapon is debatable. It's cheap, piss easy to make (a sharp point on a stick), synergizes extremely well with shields, can be used on foot and cavalry...but also overly reliant on being used in mass and has no design tricks for any utility uses such as disarmament, armor breaking, or even the ability to slash/chop. For the most part the main selling point of the spear is that you can levy any random group of untrained peasants, give them spears and shields, and just tell them to either hold still or run forwards because that's all they need to know for proper spear usage. It's simplicity at its best. The main problem is that it has almost no ability to fight outside of a grouped up formation, hence why spearmen always had backup weapons to adapt to different scenarios since you do not want to only have a spear if your sides aren't covered. This was so bad that halberds were made to just to try to remedy this. So while big army clashing fights have spears as the mvp, most battles weren't this (in fact most battles avoided this at all costs because its the most costly form of warfare in terms of lives lost) so you kind of want to carry a few different weapons per soldier.

@@DanielFruckinFlower While I agree that if that was his intention he should have keep his cool better... I can understand him. Shad, gotta correct you on one thing: when you say that archers were issued a "sheath of arrows by the king": that's not always wrong but it's not always true either, for very obvious reasons when you think about it. Medieval soldiers didnt always fight for any king, in fact, they probably did so rarely. Would every lord build up an infrastructure to have his own arrows and give them out to his archers? Nope. Most in fact probably would not have done that. In point of fact, the thing with arrows distributed by kings only makes sense in an english/british context where longbows were a primary weapon. Most archers would simply have their own arrows: built themselves, purchased, picked up from a battlefield etc. It doesnt invalidate your point that most arrows shot in war werent calibrated to the bows, but, in honour of this video being a factual correction... ;)

I would find it more likely that they would be issued by lord or the commander. Maybe a late period professional army, but due to the logistical breakdown of calling the banners and distribution of equipment potentially across a large nation, wouldn't it just be easier to produce and distribute locally from a fletcher? I'm sure it was done occasionally but it feels like a stretch to say that it would be standard practice. With any equipment really, not just arrows.

2:17 Not just historical accuracy. In his video about Fullmetal Alchemist, his chemical calculations were pretty wild (meaning incorrect). I understand that he is neither a historian, nor a scientist and realistically you cannot be literate about very subject, but it is always good to consult an "expert" on a topic you are not familiar with, if you are a creator as big as Mat. I am not even talking about actual scientists here. His calculations in the video in question were high-school level chem-calc, every chemistry-undergrad should be able to do it. (This actually speaks to a wider problem in popular science and even journalism as a whole. Of course journalists usually are not as literate on a subject as someone who devotes a significant part of their life to understanding it. But it really destroys trust in journalism, when a lot of stuff you are informed about are reported very inaccurately. Makes you wonder if they are equally bad on topics, where you do not recognize it.)

About attacking with the edge of the shield: While it's true that hitting with the edge of the shield would be better than with the flat, most shields don't have a cutting edge, which, as stated by MatPat, disperses the damage on a larger surface area. But yeah, offensive capabilities don't drop to zero, while dual-wielding shields. Just less effective than having something else with a more damaging cutting edge, in most situations.

To be fair to Ubisoft when it comes to the weapons. They do add some things that might have been rare in the time period or in disuse by that point, but it's generally not egregious. It's to give people some options both visually and for playstyle. Getting all of the period architecture, lore or the like right. That's a challenge that they tackle, but they are just a video game developer. They do a decent enough job, no one's perfect and some eras are more fleshed out and easier to research than others. Plus sometimes they use certain stereotypes for cool factor and 'it's what people expect'. However, as far as I've been through the game. Kudos to them leaving the horns off of any helmets.

Modern culture in general has a tendency to glorify Samurai. As a child I used to be in that group (hence the name...), but now when you put Samurai lords into context, you see that one of, if not the largest reasons they were so effective was because the people they spent most of their time fighting were extremely poor and very underequipped. When we think of Samurai in battle we often think of them in grand scale battles or fighting each other one on one. In truth, most Samurai spent the majority of their battle experience quashing peasant rebellions. So we end up with millions of people, like Matt, who for whatever reason place Samurai on this pedestal and worship the equipment they used as technological masterworks, even though if we compare it to period correct European counterparts we find that they're really nothing special. Or the literal mountains of bs surrounding Japanese blacksmithing, or even just Katanas specifically.

@@10tailedbijuu Well I wouldn't know because I don't think I've really watched any of his videos besides the ones he made on FNAF lore back in the day but I think it speaks volumes of his integrity as a supposed educator or researcher for lack of a better word when both his videos on historical accuracy were full of shit. Not to mention that as far as I'm aware he either refused or could not be arsed to correct his previous blunders. Also, for all we know his other videos might be full of just as much shit. Historical accuracy is a touchy subject so it's easy to get busted but not every subject has guys like these to bust you for spreading bullshit.

I thought the Templar's were formed during the crusades in the holy lands in the middle east. Along with the hospitallers and teutonic knights. Assassin's creed valhalla takes place in 8th century england. A couple of centuries before the crusades and 100s of miles away from the holy lands.

The Templar’s in the game are a much older organization called the Order of the Ancients, that reformed into the Templar’s in the 12th century

The Templars in the Assassin's Creed universe are the Cult of Kosmos that as far as we know started in ancient Greece arond the time Leonidas and his 300 defended Thermopylae. After the Cult was destroyed their ideals became what drove the Order of the Ancients in Cleopatra's Egypt, and later the Templar Order as we know it.

... I can't get the image of Shad beating a dog-ified Matpat with a rolled newspaper as he repeatedly said "NO." *And it's honestly a cute image.*

what i really love the most about shad's videos is this, i always thought im the only one being this weird about historical accuracy, especially medieval/viking age period...and shad really makes me feel heard through his words in his videos. So on that note, thank you shad for being an awesome history fanatic like myself, cheers mate!

At least he realized that dual wielding weapons is not quite practical. Give him credit where it’s due, even if he’s said some other weird stuff that’s a bit dubious.

Well, smacking someone repeatedly in the face with a blunt metal instrument is a pretty effective way of giving someone a bad time.

i think the main point and difference is that most of the times when people Dual wield it's kinda in the moment and because there is no other better option and Mat admitted that saying how it is better then nothing, what I think he's trying to say is (I didn't do any research on this btw just guessing so not a fact) no one really went into battle choosing the option of Dual wield over having a shield. I don't think many people when getting ready to fight picked 2 swords as their weapon choice, it just kinda happened when they lost their shield and all that, I don't know maybe I'm wrong lol.

When Matt talks about how the main advantage of the axe is the beard, I think he means the second axe, as he though using both offensively was ineffective.
