You can convert the values to base 10 and perform the operation. When you are done you convert the results to the required base.

Well I think that has already been explained, notwithstanding, 4*5 = 20, and then +3 = 23. Now 23/12 = 1 r 11. So that 1 which is being carried is what appears at the extreme left, we don't multiply 4 by the remainder
