When I was younger there were not many shops. There was only one by me called Ollie Pops but it didn't make it too long because we didn't have a big skate community where I lived in Jersey. Nobody liked skaters in the early 90s so we always got chased away. We petitioned our recreation for 5yrs for a small skate park because they destroyed everything we built. They finally built one when we were all married and wondered why it failed.

zumiez is absolutely a skate shop. They sell boards, hardware, tools etc. everything you need for a board. Not only that but they sell skate brands. Yes, they sell clothes and accessories, but they sell SKATE BRAND CLOTHES, including skate shoes. It's just more mainstream and that's why everyone is iffy about it.

I built a pretty nice complete from Zumiez website two weeks ago. It was my first board so I did a lot of research on prebuilts and sites with complete options. Zumiez deal to add $80 to any deck to make a complete is pretty killer. 8.25 Toy Machine Deck, Independent Stage 11 Trucks, Bones 100s wheels, Rush bearings (only possibly cheapo part). Only like $125 which was comparable to the price of prebuilts with more 'economical' parts. Zumiez did me right!

@@michaellyons3808 Seems like most people are just mad about them surviving while smaller skate shops with more knowledgeable staff go out of business. That wouldn't have happened if the majority of people went out of their way to support local businesses, including probably paying higher prices, but that doesn't happen in general. A lot of companies are moving production outside of the US for the same reason -- it's not necessarily that they are trying to make more profit but that people in general are not willing to buy at the prices they would have to charge to keep production in the states.

This keeps the money in your town and within your specific interests. Give your money to Zumies and it leaves your town maybe even your state to head out to corporate headquarters. The money then only goes to serve their needs. If it stays local at least it's recycled in your area and hopefully continues to grow your community for the better. Shop local.

I think that if you can, you should shop at your local skate shop but often they are overpriced and or some places don't have one. Although many employees that work there don't know much about skating, Zumiez is a great alternative to shop cheap skate parts.

So check this out. I have a scenario because it happened to me. So for my stepdaughter's bday, I took her out to buy her her first skateboard. So my plan was to take her to one of my favorite skateshops, but I ended up finding out they weren't able to maintain business due to covid so they closed down. So the only shops available was another, what I would call a legit skate shop and zumiez. So I decided to go to this other skate shop instead. So as we arrived to the other skate shop we found out that you had to place an online order and pick up outside the store for covid precautions. So we ended up going to Zumiez instead. The point that I'm getting at is if they sell skateboarding equipment (boards, trucks, wheels, etc) its a board shop whether you like it or not. Yes, a majority of zumiez may carry basic equipment, but i love the experience of going into a skate shop and checking out the equipment. Catch my drift?

I think if you only have a Zumiez and not an actual local skate shop (or the local skate shop doesn't have what you need/want) then it's perfectly fine to shop there for skate stuff, but I think zumiez is a clothing store first. Every zumiez I've ever been in, the majority of the store is clothes and shoes and accessories and stuff and there's a small corner in the back that has maybe 20-30 decks and a couple displays with wheels and trucks and stuff

Their rep is because of their business practices, not just what they sell. Zumiez are such a big company that in order to meet their supply needs they have to deal with large suppliers so small start up skate companies don't really have a chance, (especially when z have put all the independent skate shops out of business). Which results in every shop selling the same sht. So every skater ends up wearing the same clothes, same shoes, riding the same boards, doing the same tricks etc etc. Destroying something that was once highly creative and individual. Also because they're so big they're basically able to hold their suppliers to ransom. For example say zumiez want to buy trucks from a truck co. they can order 1000 whereas the independent skateshop may only order 50. So if the wholesale price per set is 30 for example and its costs the truck co 20 to make this means they'll need to make 20x as many sales to independent stores in order to make as much, zumiez know this so they'll say 'we're not paying 30 per unit we'll only pay 27' the truck supplier can't really afford to say no this because obviously they are making a lot of money. This means z have a lower cost price than the independent stores, which in turn means they can charge less and still make more than independent stores. eventually putting them out of business. Also over the years the truck co. production costs go up so their margins are lower and (because z have forced most of their competitors out of the market) the amount of units z order has increased as well which leads to z demanding a lower price per unit, which the supplier can't really say no to because z are one of (if not) their biggest customers. This goes on and on until the truck co. are forced out of business. I'm not saying that zumiez is the worst shop ever, they are simply representative of a runaway capitalist system. If you don't want to end up in a world where the only skate shops are zumiez, the only shoes nikes and so on then support your local store. Remember in a capitalist society every penny you spend is a vote for the type of world you want to live in. Sorry for the rant... on a lighter note uzis idea for 50 layers of griptape sounds like an excellent ymiwsi.

I grew up always going to zumiez. That being said it was popular and very well known. I would call it a skater starter shop. Go in get a complete and some comfy clothes but thats about it

I don't have any local shops. Zumiez is all we have with in a 30 minute drive. My town took down the skate park and pretty much shut down anything that gave it life.

Most skate shops I've been to also have clothes, and hats. So, it's not really that bad that they also sell clothes that are based on a skater asthetic.

I say support your local skate shop. However, some don't have a local skate shop. I don't. I think they summed it up perfectly. Zumiez is a skate STORE. Local shops are skate SHOPS. I've bought nice setups from Zumiez. I'm not ashamed.
