Ok just went and played the game myself because I was curious about the coin spending thing. I can confirm that you do not need to spend coins on the upgrades to get first place. I just got to lvl 20 without spending a single coin and have over 12k coins saved up so far. So just save your coins if you continue to play the game Sam. Also those letters spell a word and if you collect all the letters to the word twice you learn a new trick. That's all they are for.
