Even if my skill level is nowhere near this, yet, every time I watch one of these videos it helps with my beginner/intermediate technique so, so much. Just watching foot placement, balance, edges, and body movement is incredibly helpful. Thank you Asha and Ari!

You are clearly watching everything with a very analytical skater mind (and not just a wish to be entertained for 8 mins). When you watch skating in this way you can indeed learn so much. Look at Ari's knee bend on his back scooters fro example. Shows you how backwards is "identical but opposite" to forwards in terms of technique, knee bend etc. I think you qualify as an official skate nerd now (in the best possible way of course).

@@SkatefreshVideos i have an serious question when i skate backwards when i'm in the scissor position for some reason my parallel turn is opposite as you do, like when im doing a left turn i use to let my right foot behind instead of the left one i wonder if i'm doing wrong caus i still look to the left side and not the right side like an skier i'am doing like an skier when turn left in backwards the right foot gets behind and when turning to the right the left foot gets behind, i dont feel confortable leaving the the right foot in the turn direction like when we use to do during the foward parallel the left foot ahead to a left turn and the right foot to a right foot i do the parallel turn foward in the correct way but when i'm in backwards is the opposite and i prefer to look to my left shoulder i'am doing wrong? i born with ambidexterity in my hands and i'm not sure if this could be an personal trouble or happens to alot people cause i did alot search to find if it's wrong and if someone got same trouble but i didn't find anything.

Yes it's such a great addition to anyone's backwards skating. But the hard parts are those back scooter circles, getting comfy on back outside edges is stage 1 and then slow speed cross under and regroup. It's "only" 3 steps but each one has its challenge. Keep the speeds super low to reduce fear and build confidence.

Wow you just went and did them from this lesson? That's really impressive but possible if you have a good base in backwards skating. I'm glad you agree. Whenever you're shifting weight you're going to accelerate faster than just rolling (even if that's craving rolling). I'm amazed more advanced level backward skaters don't use the crossunders. They're sooooo effective. Thanks for being another statistic in the experiment.

Excellent. I do alternative crossovers backwards, I hadn’t realised there is an alternative. Something to try as and when the basketball court dries out.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 ай бұрын
The only disadvantage to doing alternate back crossovers (one each side) is that either you have to turn your head over each shoulder with each change of crossover, which means you spend a lot of time not seeing where you're going, which increases the risks of hitting a crack or debris..... or, you keep looking over your favourite shoulder but then for one of the crossovers your body is kinda twisted. The Crossunder has no such disadvantages and allows you to keep looking where you're going. Be warned.....you'll have to train the crossunders at a MUCH slower speed than your crossovers for some time, as stepping backwards behind you to a place you cannot see does freak the body out if it's too fast, so go easy and be patient. Try the whole cross under sequence in kinda slow-motion and slow speed. Enjoy!

Great job! Good to have this confirmed by more skaters. Just like a crossover creates speed from weight transfer from one skate to the other, so do crossunders. Definitely less than crossover though but that's OK. Be careful you don't exceed your "ok speed to cross under" otherwise it;s a nasty way to fall....

@@SkatefreshVideos Thank you. I do have your courses. I must resume practicing that one. I do the same as Ari on straight lines. He's right that if you push doing the carve you can get some speed (and yes is fun and also gives you periodic chances to transition forward in an emergency) but I can see how cross under generates more speed. I just stopped doing any cross-unders. They're scarier cause you can clip, but admittedly most cross-unders I tried was doing forward strolls and fell when not lifting the front foot in time.
@SkatefreshVideos

@@SaccoBelmonteit’s not an either/or situation. Both moves have their unique pluses and carving turns does feel fun, definitely lower risk for most skaters as they’re MUCH easier and they’re ideal for downhill slopes. But into the wind or needing not to loose speed then crossunders are a winner. Depends where you are and what you need at the time.

How's it going with the backwards stuff? I should say this more explicitly but most of my inline videos or tutorials are applicable to quad skaters. I teach inliners and quarries together in all classes and 85% of all my teaching is identical. Only stopper/heel brake stuff is different and of course inline conscious edge control isn't needed by quarries. BUT both skates demand the same technique movements to make the skate do what you want so that's why the instructions can be transferred one to the other. Many will argue with me saying that quads and inlines are super different. But I think wheels are wheels and the fundamentals of controlling them are the same.

It sounds to me you are screaming out for one particular lesson in the "How to Skate" Advanced course called "The Secrets to backwards skating". It shows you all the different backwards positions you'll need to be able to balance and control to do almost any manoeuvre backwards. Check out the other skills in the syllabus and note there's a sale coming up end of November..... Also test the course for free with a full Barrel Roll lesson. skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-advanced-level-full-course/ I'm sure that'll help and solve your backwards issues permanently.

Well done for your progress so far. Backwards skating is liege starting again and we have no frame of reference for moving backwards as we rarely walk or do any activity this way, so the brain needs a lot of coaxing. I have a great backwards video with drills for every level here, this will really help if you just get into back striding and steering in Ready position. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHekgJKhhseLgNEsi=sjduKE24SM-THsq4 Hope this helps

Good lesson for a skater. When he said he was wrong, he was right and when you can admit to being wrong about something it’s the best evidence for yourself that you are an open minded person. If you can never admit to being wrong you can’t really know that your open to having your beliefs questioned. That said, I think the real reason he skates backwards that way is just because it feels better and has a more natural flow. Pushing yourself to learn a new technique is good but I wonder how long it will take for something like that to become natural. …living in NY, he’s probably used to people talking faster than him 😂
@SkatefreshVideos

I agree completely and it wasn't a competition on which was the "right" technique. There are always just multiple options to explore. Any move be in simple of complex takes time to learn and even more time to become fluent and natural. You have to really want a skill for it to last the test of time.

I've been playing around with this on ice skates. Really fun. I have a question. The sequence is 1) push 2) cross under 3) lift. Just before lifting the front skate at 3 to regroup I've been giving a small push with my toe using the outside edge, to generate extra momentum, so that I'm creating propulsion at both 1 and 3. Is that what we should be doing? It may be implied in the video and it looks like you are doing it but it's never explicitly mentioned. Thanks again for this video. Really useful.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 13 күн бұрын
Do you mean doing a push in the crossed under position as the crossed foot starts to lift, you ar pushing it away a little on the little toe side of the pushing foot? If so that's an interesting question. Any weight shift creates propulsion if done correctly. This mini small push is possibly a little extra help. I'm not aware of doing it consciously however. I just did it in my feet standing here which made me realise I don't do it consciously, but I'll explore that very soon when next on my skates. There's no reason why this can't work though. It's the opposite of the forwards crossed underpush

We all with there was a space like that near us. Unfortunately I just saw a petition because NYC council is planning to develop the site for leisure but by reducing the open space and adding fairground rides, restaurants, boat docking etc. I really hope they retain some of the space for skaters. Almost everywhere in the world we are given the scraps of space. Very sad.

@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 4 ай бұрын
HI, this is a huge question and really depends on what level you are at right now. But I think THE most important skills to be focussing on (whatever level you are) are stops, because having good, functional stops you will always be hesitant and your body will resist higher speeds and be tense. This will all reduce your progress rate and increase your risk of accidents. So get those stopping methods fluent and functioning (so they stop you from your highest speeds).

The tutorial was great and you clearly have an immense amount of expertise, but it says something rather sad about your character that you interrupted him almost every single time he was about to say something or ask a question - right up until the end of the video. Even experts ought to treat others (especially their peers, and especially those with speech impediments) with enough respect to give them the space to speak.
