How to skate backwards: essential stride and stability exercises for all levels of backward skater.

In this tutorial I show you why learning to skate backwards well relies on evening out your weaker side (which WILL BE more accentuated backwards).
Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced versions of the same stride exercise are shown, demonstrating how velocity is the most fundamental of progressions when learning.
Most people skate backwards with both skates on the ground. You wouldn't dream of skating forwards in the same way and would consider it very inefficient, so why do so many people do that while skating backwards? I think it's because they are unable to comfortably support their weight on their weaker leg while going backwards. It's a huge full body challenge.
I have seen skaters develop their backward skill set MUCH faster when they really did this practice each time they skated for 10-15 mins at a slow and perfect speed for them. This is how we learned to skate forwards so we are just reproducing that process but backwards.

Im a 40yo guy, bought a inline skate 2 days ago so i can skate with my 6yo daughter and 4yo son.. last time i was on a roller skate was back in 1990. 😅 wished we had youtube back then. This is why my backwards skating felt so off!! I went from lemons all the way to backwards crossovers but they never felt "stable" I will be practicing the basics religiously from now on great video

Thank you for vocalising what I suspect 90% of self taught backwards learners do. Missing the striding will mean you'll never have the weak leg strong enough an fluent enough to do back crossovers safely. It's THE missing part of the secret sauce. And it's not as easy as it looks. Give it time and cruise in Scissor backwards when you get up too much speed. Enjoy.

That's good to hear. Yes we are always in a different place to before, so seeing a video even twice, you'll 'receive' different nuances or info each time. Useful to observe this.

I'm 35 and I do some heavy workouts but I find the mental energy to go out and skate without having pain or issues thanks to your tips. I think skate skills and training drill crossover (excuse the pun) nicely between all skating disciplines, ice and wheels. This exercise is gold! Enjoy it.

Wonderful! It's amazing how much this drill/skill develops all the holes in everyone's backwards (which is mainly not weight bearing on the weaker/less favourite leg). This forces you to and makes you conscious of your one legged steering as well! Looks so easy but isn't at all! Well done for working at it and as your speed increases, so should your practice of this too. Have you seen Backwrards 2 and 3? They go a bit further.... Same play list

Uncanny. I've just got back from practising backwards in a dry multistorey car park, using your old video tutorial. It's the one that starts with half lemons and lemons, then progresses to having the two feet on a line one in front of the other. My backwards skating and balance are truly dire 😝 but that tutorial gave me a bit of hope tbh. Taking everything back and starting out from a snail's pace with good foundational skills helps too. 😉👍

Yes, slow but high quality form will always create more improvement than going too fast and it all being a bit scrappy. This is one of the hardest things for male skaters to learn. Speed doesn't usually help perfection early on in the learning process of anything. Seems like you got this bit.

I was just out today working on this! I'm awkwardly between beginner and intermediate because I learned the two-step to propel backwards, which keeps my feet constantly on the floor - and I can do that well. I struggle with the pizza-slice marching, so I worked on that today, and into ready position, and I even mixed in some lemons for propulsion. I did a bit of steering with my heels since like I said, I already do have some backwards experience, but the propulsion is different so I need to work on marching-ready position... and then backwards SCISSOR position. For some reason this is completely escaping me. Then again, it's only day one of these drills! Perfect timing! Thanks, Asha!!!!

Yes there is a lot in the backwards syllabus to work through but that's what keeps it exciting and changing. Backward lemons, scooters, striding and scissors are the foundations to nail before you start crossing feet and doing the much harder stuff backwards (in my humble opinion). Seems longer way round to getting to the hard stuff but then when you get there it works instead of eluding you forever....

The lemons method is useful to learn how to steer your skates backwards and to be able to steer your heel out if they happen to be headed for a collision. This is a super important skill to have. However you wouldn't skate forwards in lemons all the time and think it was efficient (or cool) hence why I think that backwards striding should be how you learn to skate backwards. Only later should you then 'graduate' to cornering and parallel turns backwards and then later back crossovers and crossunders. Most people go straight to crossovers and then struggle! I think you'll enjoy the striding although it creates a lot of speed very easily so you'll need to regularly cruise and roll out that speed.

I have start learning going backward, but I feel a lot of pain in the foot ( arch area ), normally I bend my knees, I fell the weight distribution is different from skating in front, I will continue with this exercise, thanks' for sharing

Yes, keep doing this basic stride training every time you skate backwards. You can do other things too but always keep this one happening. It will eventually be very efficient and medium fast and you'll be making your weaker side stronger and more even. This helps a lot when you get to the back crossovers and more complex stuff. Most people rush there and end up doing back crossovers heavily favouring their strong leg and avoiding their weaker leg and this causes lots of issues which are then difficult to fix. It really is the fastest method, to start with something that looks basic but is actually very challenging. Enjoy the process and notice the small changes each time.

@@SkatefreshVideos I tried this yesterday and this works! I got much smoother strides with less effort than what I was trying to do before. I really tried very hard to lean forward and that made it much easier to shove off, but it's also really scary :) Thanks for doing these videos, they are so helpful!

@@The5thVolt yes it’s the speed that’s scary so train at just below your “too fast” speed and over time your average speeds will Increase naturally. Make sure you also work the Powerslide so you can stop when you need to.

Dear Asha, i am a big fan of your classes. I try to cope with muscle stiffness after intense training sessions. I was unsucessfully trying to get hold of a clip with a good muscle stretching routine for skaters. Do you think you could come up with one? That is definitely something i really miss. Hace años que patino hacia atrás, pero tengo el problema de no poder mantener mi peso en el pie delantero para poder levantar el de atrás al hacer el traspié. Necesito más equilibrio en mi pie para poder levantarlo y así mejorar mi patinaje de espaldas. Espero poder mejorar en ese aspecto porque de verdad me cuesta mucho mantener equilibrio en un solo pie. Es lo que más quiero aprender en el patinaje y sería un sueño poder hacerlo. Voy a seguir el consejo del vídeo y ojalá pueda lograrlo. Muchas gracias!

Hola. Soy Sergio del Team Skatefresh. Cuando hablas de pie delantero y pie trasero eso implica que estás haciendo criss-cross. También pareciera que le estás dando o intentando dar a cada pierna un trabajo diferente. En el criss-cross, en realidad las dos piernas trabajan en conjunto, y ambas producen propulsión, no es que una sea de acción y otra de apoyo, aunque es muy fácil confundirse al ver a otros haciéndolo. Es lo que Asha justamente menciona en este video, que al querer hacer criss-cross la mayoría olvida estas remadas más básicas en donde se le da la misma importancia a las dos piernas. Por eso es mejor hacer esto primero para que el resto sea más fácil. El criss-cross tiene por contra que al estar todas las ruedas en contacto con el suelo y en posición diagonal producen un patinaje más lento. Asha utiliza una variante (se ve en algunos de sus videos) para acelerar el criss-cross, levantando la pierna que lidera, y es quizás lo que estás intentando hacer, sin embargo tiene un constante cambio de peso de una pierna hacia la otra.

Claro, yo quiero levantar una pierna para poder agarrar más velocidad pero me cuesta mucho mantener el equilibrio en la pierna delantera cuando levanto la de atrás al hacer criss-cross en curva. No sé si se entendió bien. Yo hago criss-cross en curva y al levantar la de atrás y dejar el peso completamente adelante me tambaleo porque no puedo conseguir el equilibrio justo. Voy a practicar lo que ella dice en el vídeo, ese ejercicio en línea recta levantando un pie y el otro. Ojalá me ayude y de nuevo, gracias :D

Hola. Soy Sergio del Team Skatefresh. El criss-cross se hace en línea recta e implica mantener todas las ruedas en el suelo. Lo que tú estás haciendo en curvas se llama backward crossovers (o cruzados de espaldas, en español) y hay un video sobre eso aquí kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGOwnpqMZaaBbdU aunque está en inglés. El movimiento involucra transferir el peso de una pierna a la otra constantemente, y esto hay que saber coordinarlo junto con la inclinación de las guías, pero lo mejor del caso es que cuando está bien hecho se levanta mucha velocidad, así que da bastante miedo y hay que practicarlo muy lento para no entrar en pánico. Para colmo hay que ir mirando hacia atrás, así que lleva tiempo. Yo te sugiero prácticar las remadas simples de este video que te darán independencia, fuerza y equilibrio para cada pierna, y es la base para hacer el resto. Luego puedes darle un vistazo a ese otro video en inglés. Sin embargo si entiendes inglés lo mejor sería tomar el curso "How to Skate: Advanced" skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-advanced-level-full-course/ donde Asha explica los cruzados de espaldas y otros movimientos de espaldas a todo detalle. Son técnicas realmente complejas y por eso no las puede explicar en videos cortos de KZbin.

Everyone is uneven going backwards. The body is kind of horrified at going backwards so it stick to the only place it likes best, the favourite leg! This takes a lot of repetition for the body to begin to trust the weaker, less favourite leg. But when this is a stored, it makes ALL the difference to all skills involving backwards. Keep at it.

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Those are not as easy as they seem, and require being already proficient in basic backwards. You need to master several positions and be comfortable with them because at some point it feels like skating blind, that's why Asha didn't do KZbin videos about that. I’m a 43yo Chica trying back-skating but fear it so much don’t know why....🙈; in your opinion and experience do you think skating backwards would be easier on 110mm or 125mm?!? Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. In general, the larger the wheel the harder everything is, because with larger wheels the frame is longer and your center of gravity is higher. The same rule applies on the opposite direction: with small wheels tricks are easier. Aggressive skaters wear very small wheels and that make them feel like wearing sneakers. Big wheels are good for speed because they keep momentum when you glide. Fear is normal going backwards because it feels different and it's not something you do frequently. With practice you will feel more and more comfortable. At the beginning it's essential to find a clean and flat space to avoid stress.

I have to get a better practice area for this. My hilly neighborhood which I skate several times a week is clearly not a good place for practicing backward skating.

No.....slopes make backwards a scary and random process. Needs to be pretty flat and smooth ideally. Clear your practice area of twigs and stones before then doing some up and down backward training. It's awful to fall over on some debris you just didn't see. Good luck finding that new place.

I do my lemons and half-lemons and get backwards… but… how do I progress from there? How do I develop balance and stride backwards?

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Lemons and half-lemons are good to get used to the backward movement but definitely not the best way to get propulsion. To progress, just go with the exercise for beginners Asha explained in this video, the point is to lift your feet one at a time keeping a narrow stance. With your level you will probably feel quite confident doing that; if so, then do the exercise for intermediates which feels similar to half-lemons but lifting your feet. Make sure your ankles don't rock in doing that.

If you have been skating outside, do you do anything special to prepare your skates for rink skating again? I have noticed a lot of outdoor folks use those tall three wheeled skates. Any particular reason? Thanks for making these videos!

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. When Asha goes to rinks she usually rides quads, not inlines, because that allows her to dance easier. Though you can ride any skates some are better than others for different purposes. Inlines are better to skate outdoors, and 3-wheels skates in particular were made for long distances and speed. You can be faster with them without much effort because they keep momentum, therefore you can rest more. The same skater will go faster using 3x110mm than using 4x80mm. The downside is that your center of gravity is higher and big wheels are inconvenient for sharp turns and sudden maneuvers where you use pivots and such. This is why skaters who perform slalom tricks hardly ever do that with big wheels. Those wheels would not be good for aggressive skating or hockey either. The wheel profile in 90mm and up is bullet, never round, this is another point in favor of speed, not tricks. Now you asked about preparing skates for rinks... Well, in rinks the floor is perfectly smooth. If you have been skating with hard wheels outdoors the same wheels may make you slip on a perfect floor because hard wheels have less grip.

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Not really. To glide backward after gaining some speed you do use the backward scissors and that implies that your right leg will lead (if you're looking over your right shoulder) and the trailing leg will follow. However, that is just "coasting" until the speed is gone. In this video Asha is not scissoring at all, she's talking about the stride, and the stride has two phases: push and glide. Here you will see that both feet are at the same level, one is not forward or behind.

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. What do you mean you "can't get going in line"? You mean you are trying to have both skates perfectly aligned? You don't need that. The scissor position just requires to have one foot forward, but not one foot perfectly in front of the other. The separation between feet should be about one foot, no more and no less than that. It's just like it is in the ready position.
