This is crazy. I'm a Canadian. We would never interview someone based on where someone was raised in the sense of equating it to a class in hopes of demeaning them or putting them in their place. If you simply examine Cheryl and Fergie as people, Cheryl is hands down more gracious, kind, empathic, and understanding of the human condition than Fergie. If I needed someone or help, I would definitely go to Cheryl and not Fergie.

Do English-folk have difficulty understanding each other through their accents usually, or is that just my being unaccustomed to it? I can barely understand Cheryl when she speaks, but amazingly, the accent vanishes when she's singing. I have a difficult time reconciling one voice with the other.

I'm 2 years late but no, we don't struggle to understand other regional accents. Sometimes it can be a little hard to understand a really thick Scottish accent but that's about it

I'm American, and although I lived in London for three years, I have ZERO issues understanding Cheryl's accent. I even understand Scots and the Irish as well, whether or not they have a heavy brogue or not. I think it depends on how adept one is at languages and how well-traveled and how exposed to different dialects someone has been also. I sometimes run into trouble differentiating Aussies and Kiwis, but that's because literally the accent sounds EXACTLY the same. Even they say so. If someone says they are from Auckland or Sydney, than that's obviously a clue, but if they don't tell me where they're from immediately, I have guessed incorrectly.
