“You should do your research", said the pop singer to the professor of evolutionary biology; saved by the bell...

Hi Mrs. Beaver, research indeed! For me it's been 45 years, on par with Sir Richard Dawkins. Many naturalists argue, some quite vehemently, that religion is ultimately evil, by which I suppose they mean unadaptive. At the same time, evolutionary psychologists claim religious behavior is a result of evolution. Evolutionary dynamics allows a feature that is adaptively neutral to co-evolve as an accidental correlate or by-product of an advantageous feature. Gould calls such features "spandrels" after the supposedly unplanned spaces between arches.6 But, how can religion be both adaptively neutral, and ultimately unadaptive? This is another mystery of the naturalist faith. If spiritual longings evolved in the same way as our desires for food, drink, sex and knowledge, how could those longings be incapable of fulfilment? Imagine two genetic lines, one of which spends significant time and resources searching for mucta, which does not exist, and another like it in all respects except for the mucta-drive. Cleary, the second line will out-compete the first. For such evolutionary competition, we need the two variants, each able to pass its mucta-desire trait on to is heirs. If we take mucta to be God, the naturalist hypothesis points to the demise of spirituality. Is this hypothesis viable? There are atheists who profess no spiritual longings, and they tend to pass their position on to their children. So, while the preconditions for the evolutionary demise of spirituality exist, theists are not an extinct variant, but the majority of the population. So, spirituality is adaptive. Its adaptiveness is confirmed by the correlation of spiritual behavior with health, psychological well-being and longevity.7 Thus, if evolutionary psychology correctly accounts for the development of behavior, including spiritual behavior, it is hard to see how the quest for God could be baseless. At the very least, naturalists attacking religion and spirituality are working to reduce human fitness. 7. Hummer, et al. (1999), "Religious Participation and U.S. Adult Mortality." See also ScienceDaily (1999), "Research Shows Religion Plays a Major Role in Health, Longevity." Maselko, et al. (2006), "Religious Service Attendance and Decline in Pulmonary Function in a High Functioning Elderly Cohort." See also ScienceDaily (2006a), "Go to Church and Breathe Easier." Maselko, et al. (2008), "Religious Service Attendance and Spiritual Well-Being are Differently Associated with Risk of Major Depression," See also ScienceDaily (2006), "Weekly Religious Attendance Nearly as Effective as Statins and Exercise in Extending Life." God, Science & Mind: The Irrationality of Naturalism by Dennis F. Polis, Ph.D. The psalmist is right, but I'd also like to add the few opening seconds I watched of this video was the best I've ever seen of Dr. Dawkins. He was polite, warm, open, and honest about what he was born into, his parents baptizing him instead of that trite bullshit slogan his legions of followers live and die by, "We're all born atheist." Sir Richard Dawkins admitted he was a holy Christian until age 15 following in his parents saintly footsteps. Right on Sir!

@Darrin Ram "Thank you for admitting you're on my side." I'm your necessitating antecedent, we can't both exist and be on your side; that's why I can't ever be "atheist," I'd need *God* to be one! While this is true he suffers, albeit to a lesser extent, from the same issues as Hitchens. Hitchens straw-man’s the religious arguments. Dawkins does not straw-man but does not ever accept a religious premise and the debunk it. He just claims there’s an alternative way of viewing things but it is by no means a smoking gun to his opponent. Always great to listen to him though. Who would be accepting to a person who wants to kill you because of your beliefs or lack thereof. If two opposing religions accepted one another's teachings, wouldn't that be rebuking their own religion/teachings? I honestly believe most religions are either ancient attempts at understanding the world and life. Or they're stories conjured up by man to control man using his fear of the unknown.

Assuming that any religious person - Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Scientologist, etc. - is illogical and irrational - what exactly has been fully explained by science and what will eventually be fully explained by science? Hundreds of years after Newton and still so many questions about gravity. There are antibiotics and successful organ transplants - yet the precise causes of something as simple as a common hangover can’t be fully explained by science. Most religions deal with questions about the origins of the universe - yet there are so many unknowns about human anatomy. There is no evidence that science will fully explain the world. But Dawkins makes this claim. Hmm… He’s an atheist and yet he holds unprovable beliefs…

It is a shame. Dawkins is so easy to crush. Richard Dawkins teaches the universe came from "literally nothing." Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We can't get anything from "literally nothing." We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God. God is the reason for us and all we have. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJqwoq2ElL6Gjrc “However improbable the origin of life might be, we know it happened on Earth because we are here.” -Richard Dawkins. ""There is no evidence for any supernatural being of any kind. So it goes against the spirit of science." --Richard Dawkins We only get life from life...the law of biogenesis. ‏Anthony Flew is considered one of the most prominent atheists, so he retracted his atheism and told us that the universe has a deity with modern scientific evidence, not with thought or dreams and feeling, but after science and modern discoveries about the existence of a Creator. He fell into another problem that the Creator wanted according to his mood ‏ He wanted the Creator to be neither speaking nor hearing, and creating creation in vain ‏ And God informed the Qur’an of this by saying: “Did you think that we created you without a purpose and that you would never return to us?” ? " ‏God Almighty: ((We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?) ‏But it is logical that this Creator sends a messenger to teach us who he is. And we have to verify the authenticity of the Messenger and what this Messenger calls to? ‏ It transports sperm from the liquid state to the eyes, heart, blood, arteries, and bones. Unconscious nature creates a conscious human being. Then this nature teaches about the importance of the heart and lung, then puts the rib cage, then oxygen, then water, there is sexual desire, and there are the genitals to complete the male and female sexual process. , What coincidence are you talking about, a coincidence that creates the male and the female. All of these are called verses and there are things that complement each other, there is a lung and there is air and there are teeth and stomach and in food and other things and we say that it has no creator!!! ‏ The only question God will ask you is ‏ focus on it ‏ ((He said: Did you deny My verses and did not encompass them in knowledge, or what did you do?)) ‏ I mean, God Almighty tells you what I told you is a lie and you cannot realize it or understand it ‏ And what in the world have you been doing? ‏ Do you know what your answer is? ‏ ((The decree will befall them for what they did wrong, and they will not be able to speak. ‏ If you find yourself in the world without a choice in a great reality we live in, and you go without a choice and a question is the most important ‏ If your destiny is fire, has God wronged you??? ‏Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, is a prophet from the Creator, and before him many prophets did not lie or deceive, and he is the only religion that commands you to worship one Creator who created everything. ‏First of all, you should know that the religion of all prophets is the worship of one Creator who created everything. Islam today is the only religion that commands you to worship one Creator and not idols, illusions, conjecture or a number of gods. But how do we know that the speech is from God and not from Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace? . These are some of the things that comfort your heart and believe that this is a prophet and many of the prophets before him ‏ The Almighty said: (Moreover He comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke) ‏ The smoke confirms that the origin of this universe is inflamed. It is not a lake of water, as was the perception of all philosophies and religions that are based on illusion. This is one of the postulates of modern science today that the sky is condensation of smoke. This fact converted the French scientist Maurice to Islam and wrote a book entitled the Holy Qur’an on the scale of modern science ‏How did Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, know this fact before? ‏ The Almighty says: ((And the heaven We constructed)) ‏ The sky is a building, not a vacuum as it was thought, and this was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017 that proved it ‏How did Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, know this fact before? ‏The Almighty’s saying: ((And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander. )). ‏ That is, the sky expands with time. This fact, even in the time of Einstein, was not imagined by anyone and it was proven. And Einstein admitted it and admitted that it was the biggest scientific mistake he made in his life if he believed that the sky was fixed. The Qur’an before Einstein says that the sky expands ‏fact ‏ Almighty’s saying: :((And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]. And everything We have set out in detail. )) ‏ The verse of the night is the moon and the verse of the day is the sun. The Qur'an tells that the sun and the moon were fiery masses. That is, the moon was a fiery mass and was erased, and the verse of the day remained visible to the eyes. Was the moon a fiery mass and extinguished? This is one of the biggest scientific issues discovered about the moon. The moon was already a fiery mass, and NASA issued on its official website a conceptual clip entitled The Evolution of the Moon in the video. In fact, the moon was a fiery mass like the sun, and this is what the Qur’an told about and the truth of modern science. ‏How did Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, know this fact before? ‏Almighty’s saying ‏And you see the mountains thinking that they are rigid, while you will cross as the passage of clouds. [It is] the work of God who has perfected everything. In fact, he knows what you're doing.)) ‏ And the verse clearly spoke of a strange phenomenon, which is that the viewer of the mountains appears to him still, that is, they are still, but in fact they are not like that, rather they are in a state of constant movement. And the infidels of Quraish had previously accused our master Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, of madness, and it is likely that their joy was overwhelming when this verse was revealed. ‏ They also found in it, according to their claim, evidence of this madness, and they told the people: How can you believe this man who says that these fixed mountains move like clouds moving in the sky! ‏ And today it is proven that the earth rotates, and with it the mountains, how did Muhammad know that and why is he telling you instead of the matter that makes people consider him crazy? The matter was not from him, but from God. Almighty’s saying ‏Those whom Allah (in His plan) willeth to guide,- He openeth their breast to Islam; those whom He willeth to leave straying,- He maketh their breast close and constricted, as if they had to climb up to the skies: thus doth Allah (heap) the penalty on those who refuse to believe)). ‏After man was able to reach the sky by flying by modern means of transportation, he knew that the higher up in the air, the less oxygen and atmospheric pressure, which causes severe tightness in the chests and the process of breathing. : ‏How did Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, know this fact before? It was not from him, but from God Almighty’s saying ‏Or (the Unbelievers' state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light, there is no light! ‏Modern sciences have revealed that in the bottom of the deep seas with abundant water - the deep sea - there is great darkness, to the extent that living creatures live in this darkness without visual tools, but live using their other senses such as hearing. ‏These dark darknesses are not found in the sea water that surrounds the Arabian Peninsula, but rather they have been discovered in the oceans far from it ‏This verse shows another aspect of the Qur’anic miracle, which is that the sea wave that all people only knew was one wave in the seas. ‏The verse says there is another wave in the depths of the sea, and divers discovered at the beginning of the twentieth century a fact that was hidden in the depths of the sea, that fact that shows another wave that throws divers into it as it is thrown at swimmers, and this wave was discovered by Scandinavian divers. I will tell you what the Prophet said. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: One day the Bedouins who live in the desert will build tall towers, and this is my duty. Go and see where the tallest buildings are and who owns them. ‏All these and other matters that I have not mentioned indicate that this is a prophet from God. More important than that, as I told you, is the only religion that commands you to worship one Creator, who created everything and before him many prophets. ‏Say, if you wish, there is no god but God, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God ‏ speak from the heart

And in the countries where they were exiled, they were the minority and were heavily persecuted. They were not allowed to secure jobs and were often expelled from their lands.. And throughout the ages, kings, queens, political and religious leaders tried to annihilate them...do you think they could survive as a people? Could they become a nation again and become a powerful force in the region shortly after they reestablish themselves in the land of their forefathers? And as they tried to rebuild their tiny country, they have to survive the attacks of the neighboring nations that have more well-established armies? Considering they are a small country, with no army at that time, as small as New Jersey with the land mostly dessert, surrounded by enemies who attack them from all sides--- and with hardly any natural resources that even Mark Twain in his diary said that even a cactus was having a hard time to grow in this arid, bone dry and dessicated land ? @@solounusuariomas5574 I disagree. I am an atheist, but what Muslim doesn't think that the Christian religion is "fake". What Christian doesn't think that the Hindu religion is "fake". Is it impolite to state what you believe? Dawkins states his opinions plainly, just as Christians state plainly that they believe that Jesus was resurrected and that he walked on water. If someone say that they believe these things and are offended when anyone tries to contradict them, they are essentially saying that any belief otherwise is fake or wrongheaded, which has been the norm for most of history. Dawkins is more direct in his language, but directness is not rudeness, I would say that what is worse is hiding behind vague sentiments and scripture that is, to say the least, not applicable to fact checking, and asserting that your beliefs are unassailable by the very virtue of their unassailablilty. Richard Dawkins is a gentleman, I however am not, so I say fuck religion, it has done more bad than good and anyone who disagrees is ignorant of history.

@Carlos Spiceywhiener You may have put words in Dawkin's mouth. He didn't insult the man (ad hominem) but the subject (Book of Mormon). There is a difference. In a debate you are SUPPOSED to attack the subject not the person. As long as you attack the subject, you are fine. Analogy. Art - Some artist puts a stone on a pillar and call it art. - I say that is rubbish. It's a stone. There is no context to move me from seeing a piece of random rock pulled from the street. - Artist gets offended and says I insulted him. You can see the intellectual dishonesty? I was rightfully giving my opinion on the SUBJECT not the PERSON. So you can see how Dawkins' giving of an opinion on the Book of Mormon, is not an insult on the practitioner? That would be the same as every Christian getting pissy anytime someone criticises the Bible... or any professor getting pissy when an article s/he wrote is criticised....

@Carlos Spiceywhiener no we don't. I don't presume to know. You do. I tackle arguments and discussions on the face of what was said. And if a statement that was not said is to be inferred, the burden is on me to show the link between what was said and what was inferred. This is in world of mathematics is called writing a proof. Eg there is series of statements that link the statements A:"Let there be a right angled triangle" and B:"The sum of squares of the two shorter sides equals the square of the longest side". Pythagoras' theorem is just uttered out of thin air, it is shown by a clear delineation of steps. I make the argument you presume to know Dawkins intent. The burden is on you to show a delineation of steps from what he said about the book to what you inferred he said about the person.

Maybe the nervousness contributes to him behaving that way, but it can irritate me a little when people can not argue for their cause in a calm and relaxed way. Richard is a very smart man, but we all have a different definition of what god is. In my own life, I get a feeling that people who often behave in this way in discussions are people who want to appear as very rational and shuts out everything that can have to do with spirituality or some sort of thought of what god is or whatever.

Jonah, was probably rescued by a Dolphin cetacean NOT a Whale, And probably lived ON its back, not IN its mouth but FROM its mouth the Dolphin may have given Jonah , fish to eat at sea… EVERYTHING written in our Bible, is rooted in SOME Truth or other, albeit perhaps not literally exactly so… To understand, you really sometimes need to… THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX !!!

@@metalguru9333 Fortunately we can see evolution in action by using the Drosophila fruit fly for experimentation. You may not want to believe it and so you choose a few people or videos that agree with your argument but the huge majority of scientists do not agree with you. The scientists who claim that evolution is not real have not proved anything using scientific method and replicable experiments and data. Claiming that the New Testament is accurate because it was the most recent is laughable. By that logic the Quran is more accurate. It may not be Judeo-Christian but it is the last in the Abrahamic books. When you have to twist the words of god to fit the new world then you are clutching at straws really. Gods word would not have to be interpreted it would be clear and succinct. Using probably is not a good way to make an argument. But much love to you for whatever you believe if it makes you feel good.

6:10 As a teen and a fairly recent child of 5, I can assert that children (and teens) would rather be told the truth about their dead rabbit than be told some fictitious story of consolation. This does not mean that one can't be more compassionate than "The rabbit will lie here and rot," but once they find out that you lied to them, they are going to feel hurt and betrayed, and there has gone not only their consolation, but also their relationship with their parent. Lose, lose kind of situation.

I know right? There’s a certain beauty to the idea that the rabbit’s remains will go on to make new plants and animals - or given enough time, return to the stars. You don’t need myths of an afterlife to see a pretty awe inspiring grand picture.

I don't agree. When children grow up they will or should understand why you told them some fictitious story of consolation. It is obviously not to come across a untrustworthy or betrayed but instead for their wellbeing at the time. Betrayed is something completely different. But I don't disagree that you can say it with another strategy like you just wrote too.

I believe that all spirits both animal and human (and a human is an animal) go to God after the death of their bodies. I left my body as a spirit before and I have seen other people spirits but never other types of animals as yet. There is a whole universe out there that you are unaware of but I am not. I long to see my dogs and cats and rabbits again when I leave this world for good or until the resurrection. I know that death seems dead only, but it is not. Jesus once said to me,"The day that you die is the best day of your life because then I get to give you paradise." I treasure those words of Jesus to me.

John 1 King James Version 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. God loves you so much that He sent his only begotten Son to die on the cross to pay for your sins. If you believe and put your trust in Jesus Christ, that He died on the cross to pay your sin debt and that He rose again on the third day, you will be saved. once you are saved, you will not die in your sins and be damned to hell for eternity. God will remove your sins and your soul will be washed clean with the blood that Jesus Christ shed for us on the cross. your own good works will not get you into heaven. Jesus Christ did all of the work for you, all you have to do is believe and put your trust in Him and He will save you. Ephesians 1:13 King James Version 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,. Jesus Christ is coming back very soon and we all have to be ready. I pray in Jesus Christ's mighty name that you be saved.

Yep, I did. I cannot believe that people can believe tripe like Mormonism or as we see below in the comments Scientology? Both are obviously made up but then so are all the other religions of the world, even the old Roman and Greek gods but most followers of Christianity just sit back and smile at Prof Hawkins logic or write an letter to the local newspaper whilst another followers of other faiths issues death threats even to novelists who writes fiction. Even today if you take a copy of Satanic Verses to some UK cities usually those old mill town in NE and ask people on the streets if the copy you hold up is still divisive and proof of the lack of free speech you will end up attacked. Please don't give me a God or religion, any of them.

Actually Brandon is right on this one. While I do not question Dawkins ability to research, I do question what he looked at. Joseph Smith was in-fact never found guilty of a “con” crime. There was a hearing (not a trial) in 1826 stemming from the disgruntled son (or nephew) of a man who hired Joseph. However the man who hired Joseph said he was more than satisfied with Joseph and actually defended him during the hearing. Obviously, the case was thrown out by the judge. Joseph was never convicted of a crime or “con.” Those are the facts. The faulty facts come from anti-LDS sources who found evidence of a trial (hearing) and concluded that “he was a convicted con man.” He wasn’t. So yes, while Dawkins did research, he did not use reliable resources. This is known as “study bias” and sadly no one is completely immune to this kind of bias. A conclusion was reached without factual evidence. Factual evidence, does in fact show the case was thrown out during a hearing.
