I saw her in 2004 in Houston. She looked just like that. During the show she walked to the back of the hall and stood a few feet away from me. A whole lot of people were trying to get close and touch her. She looked at me, and we just had a moment of respect; she knew that I didn't need to grope her to appreciate her and she signalled her appreciation for that moment. We saw each other as people, not as icons or strangers.

Europe will NEVER have a Carson or a Conan or a Letterman or an Oprah or a Kimmel or a Jon Stewart or a Howard Stern or a Marc Maron or a Dick Cavett or a Larry Sanders or a Jimmy Fallon.... and the list could go on but I don’t wanna get carpal tunnel syndrome. Entertainment is the name of the game dude. Interrupting a celebrity isn’t a sign of disrespect. It’s a sign of moving on to the next question. An experienced interviewer knows that. If the guest isn’t a self-indulgent asshole, he should know that too. Also, it’s the host’s show, NOT the show of the person being interviewed. Nice try though. Side note, does anyone honestly think that if Europeans were still running the show, the world would be a better place? I mean, I guess so, if they’ve never read anything about the history of the civilized world.

The day after I engaged my now wife in Berkeley, we walked into Golden Gate Park and Patti was performing a free concert. The craziest part is there was no more than a few hundred people. The park was practically empty, and she was singing her heart out and reciting prayers over the people. It still remains a lifelong blessing for my family, of now which my wife and I have been given three children. I attribute a lot of the core of our foundation to Patti. May she be blessed eternally in body and spirit. Amen. I love you, Patti.

A few years ago I read Just Kids, and also watched a documentary about her (it was wonderful, but the title escapes me at the moment). I'd adored Patti to the point of worship since I first heard her in about 1979, but then I found myself a little turned off by what I thought of as some name-dropping and her excitement about some expensive little designer piece of clothing she'd gotten. And then I realized that THAT is the beauty of Patti--she doesn't give a rat's ass about what I or anyone else think of what she does and how she looks and how she lives her life. If I think that I'm just so cool that I can have disdain for her Comme des Garcons outfit--that I think she's "selling out" because one day she doesn't feel like wearing a ratty tee shirt and jeans--that's just too freaking bad. She is exactly who she is, all the time, as far as I can tell. Who else can you say is so utterly true to herself? She will always be a role model for me in that way (and I LOVE her music!).

She does what she wants and she's sort of filmic. Plus like you see in her books, (like the part when they were always going to Max's Kansas City), she and Robert got into what I see as non-egotistical self-promotion (dressing and looking a certain way) because they knew they had to get publicity for their art, which they knew was powerful and would change the world.

Such a great interview. Patti seems so fun and open and she's sharing her stories. I love that she was able to answer the question at 6:00 - I saw her once back stage at an Allen Ginsberg event, and she seemed so intense, love how she's aware of people's perception, and how she can be that and much more
