SKD Tactical: PIG Plate Carrier

I love my pig! I have ten different carriers including two rbav’s and my Pig is my go to! I also heavily modified it! Added tan spacer mesh to the front interior panel, first spear tube system and different cummerbund, removed the dual front flaps and added surface mount buckles with a placard. So much better!

My understanding (if SKD were taking design cues from LBT) the loop Velcro around the neck is for the installation of a yoke for soft armor neck protection.

Actually Firstspear has that on their strandhogg plate carrier as well. Considering SKD sells a economic version of that plate carrier, that's probably where the design is from.

Also the pig plate carrier was debuted in 2009 and predates firstspear's existence... STT didn't come around until like 2014

You are right. The first First Spear plate carrier that has this design is called Beat Up around 2010. This one predates First Spear, roughly about the time when 6094 also has this design. I've always wondered what these velcro are for, because First Spear has their own MASS system which includes ballistic collar that does not require inner velcro to mount.

I bought my first PIG many moons ago. I had zero issues, and it served me well. When it was time for a second "ready rig", I bought another last year. There are plenty of new options out there, but none that I believed would serve me any better than the SKD PIG. On top of the quality products, SKD is an excellent company to deal with. I always look there first. Good people...

As a former SAW gunner I cant help but see a plate carrier optimized to have two SAW nut sack pouches up front.

I never really appreciated these back in the day. I thought it was a fat guy plate carrier just based on how wide it was. They really thought about the guys on the ground carrying side plates and yokes all day and how they'd want to get in and out of it. Nice size adjustment range without a terrible amount of excess. To me it seems like a CAGE made for real guys

My first PC was the all velcro SKD Pig Brig. I used it to add ICW plates as an overt addln for when I was wearing soft armor under my duty uniform already. That way i could swim my head and one arm in and close one side of the cummerbund and grab my patrol rifle. A couple years later we transitioned to the outer vest, which was nice to move some stuff off the waist but did mean my scale able protection for certain calls wasnt going to work as timely anymore.

My understanding is that the PIG took a lot of inspiration from the Eagle PC (EPC) which explains the 8 wide PALS and the shoulder strap adjustment.

This was my first plate carrier. The d ring loops over the buckles gave a clean shoulder pocket and the ability to run 4 pouches across the front was nice. It was a comfortable carrier. I still have it and I was wondering what a good cumberbund upgrade would be over the standard Molle one.

If you reach out to SKD, they will promptly respond with potential upgrades. I don't remember what they were, off the top of my head.

I opted for the stt at the time cause laser cut looks cool and not everyone was doing it yet. And I was too poor for actual first spear lmao
