Carthus dominating in the team fight makes sense. They were a conquering ARMY, while the Pontiff's knights were better individually (if only slightly).

Personally I'd say it comes more from the fact that the skeletons are more agressive, that they have more HP, and that they have resistance to irithyll's attacks whereas irithyll's knights are weak to the bleed attacks of the carthus swordmsen.

Depending on the timeperiod they could get more or less individualistic, but their purpose to fight in armies never changed, it's always been the case. Unless you go really really far the renaissance and the modern era, where you see "knighthood" being increasingly less about being a fighter in the fray and more being about... a title of nobility linked to the military at large, or even not to the military -_- But I suppose you're talking about the regular kind of knight. Also, there is only like... One pontiff knight that's alone ? Maybe two ? All the others are closely grouped together, whereas the carthus swrdsoman there are at least six of them that are alone, and all the others that are in group are never close to one another but rather at odds with one another, which is a kind mercy upon the player since otherwise they'd get ganked to death whilst trying to silence that damn ballista. "Carthus Swordsmen probably only fought when they were in armies, never really in solitude" How would you know that ? It's literally never indicated anywhere, and "swordsman" doesn't really give the impression that they were parts of units, or even an army, since anyone can be a swordsman, whereas only soldiers (in high and medium medieval times) could be knights.

That's because their lack of poise and aggression wasn't so much of a factor when they could cover for each other. The Pontiff Knights are OP. Against the player, this isn't so much of a problem because we have a brain. But against any mob that has to stand there and take those endless combinations without either poise or s, they're broken.

I'd go with the Silver Knights initially. They have ranged options the other two lack. The Ringed Knights are the most aggressive with the best shields and AoE damage. The Black Knights are the most limited, but hit the hardest.

Kinda makes sense from historical perspective: Knights had the best training a man could afford at that time and thus made great duelists, but due to them rarely seeing real combat, lacked experience. Meanwhile the common soldiers had far inferior training, however if they were from a warmongering nation, they learned on the job and eventually if they survived long enough become veterans. Thus it makes sense that the knights won the duels while the gravewardens won the teamfight

This video is actually pretty insightful. I wouldn't think pontiff knight would do good in a 1v1 one, but given that carthus have so many wind-up attacks show it works against them when up against those who use well pace attacks that become increasingly aggressive towards the end of their assualt. Carthus ended up winning the team battle because of their windup which allows their allies to attack in between their strikes creating the visual of an unending advance with no room to breathe. I was actually quite concern for carthus after seeing the scythe cover so much ground and cover their rear. But the Murakumo also does nonsense amount of damage.

The fact that the Carthus mobs all have cloaks and Curved swords ad shit really give them a Prince of Persia-esque style. In fact I'm pretty sure the Kingdom of Carthus used to be a desert based land (after all, we only visit their catacombs, not the actual place). EDIT: Also man the "Death God of Sulyvhan" got fuuuuucked in that first 1v1. EDIT2: Also also I think Carthus won so easily in the team fight because they all deal bleed dammages so a brawl situation allow them hit multiple bleed dammage on the same target which ultimately proc bleed very easily and very fast, unlike the Pontiff Knight who can't proc Frostbite because the skelletons are immune to it.
