Ignorance remains our greatest adversary. Despite living in an age characterized by advanced information and communication technologies, we consistently neglect to conduct even the most basic research. While Malaysia is a nation composed of diverse religions, each with its own set of laws, coexistence has not proven to be a significant issue there, nor in neighboring countries like Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. This assertion is based on personal experience. We in the western hemisphere tend in many cases to paint everything with the same color because we simply don't know!

Great to see a list of potential retirement destinations, but I hope we’re considering more than just cost of living and weather. What about healthcare quality, safety, and cultural integration? Retiring in another country can be a dream, but it’s crucial to think about how well you’ll fit in and access necessary services. Also, is the lifestyle truly enjoyable, or just cheap? The word “expats” is a new word used only by people from USA to avoid the proper term “immigrants” It is a paradox the immigrants’ country USA have been building an stigma around the word immigrants All of us living in US are immigrants excluded the native Americans, the original inhabitants of this land. Once I hear someone saying “expats” I feel sorry for them. Be proud of being an immigrant and even better, learn the language of the country you choose to live in
@JohnStarkey-u6z5 ай бұрын
"Immigrant" carries the connotation of someone on the path towards citizenship in a new country. I'm surprised, frankly, that Yanks even use the word. I think we coined it here in Britain in the 1960s. To live more affordably, we sought out destinations like the Costa del Sol ... not seeking to immigrate, but rather to live as expatriates, which got abbreviated to expats. Indeed, maximum pension benefits in some countries require spending at least 6 months per year resident in your home land. So people dependent on a government pension are not going to actually immigrate to their secondary place of residence ... they will become instead long-term visitors. Several host countries limit visas to 6 months per year. That's why you help your kids construct a garden suite or granny flat for you.
@beth6225 ай бұрын
Expats is not a new word and does not just refer to those of one country.
@michaelsd2845 ай бұрын
I think you need to widen your "lens". The word expatriate comes from the Latin term ex 'out of' and the Greek term patria 'native country, fatherland'. This word has been in use for centuries and has change in means in some periods of history. My first recollection of this word being used was in Europe referring to fellow country men leaving abroad especially in Southeast Asia. It should not carry any negative connotations as it simply refers to someone voluntarily trying out a new home.

In Tunisia you can live with 600€ a real good country

Many countries offer so much. Safety in Asia is a concern. I will nor ever go to the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea,China. So many people are leaving these countries….why move there. Believe me, you stand out if you are Caucasian. Third world country lifestyle may sound exotic and exciting but safety is very important. There is a reason why they are third world status. From what I have seen, North America is the best place to live.

I recently spent a month in Vietnam and never heard a police, ambulance, or fire siren. I felt safer in DaNang than I do in Washington DC.

Why people have to go to another country for retirement? Don't they like their own?
@LR-sn9gt7 ай бұрын
Like the UK. Cost of living is so high and getting higher a lot of pensions do not cover the food bill and housing expenses. But then if you bothered to research this you would know this common basic fact.
