Sketchbook How-To: Collage

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
I'm back from my break and I want to wish you a very happy new year!
I get a lot of questions about making a collage and combining it with drawing. And i learned it just recently. I learned form Marina Grechanik, at a workshop that I took last year, to make different compositions and draw on top.
It's all about color, textures and shapes, but also about letting go. Don't be precious about the compositions you make. Don't get attached, because you are going to draw all over the perhaps beautiful finished collage that you made.
I really enjoy playing with collage, so today I would like to show you how I prepare a page with collage, to draw on top of it later.
I will use collage pieces that I collected during workshop trips I took last year on Italy, France, Portugal and Malta.
You'll see me selecting my collage pieces and choosing my color palette from them.
Then I'll play with composition, refine things, and glue everything down onto the page.

Your assignment this week is to make a composition with at least 2 different pieces of collage material. Explore color combinations and textural variety.
You might think you don't have any collage materials, but you'll find things quickly: a printed piece of paper, part of a brown paper bag, some tissue paper that came with a delivery... don't be discouraged if you've never done this. if you have a glue stick... everyone can do this!

-Hahnemühle Nostalgie Sketchbook, Size A5,
-Pieces of paper, collected from trips (paper cutlery holder, watercolor washed paper, bread basket paper, brown paper bag, magazine
-glue stick
-scissors

Yeah you’re back! Like you, I just love collecting my own memorabilia and scraps (rather than buying mass-produced ephemera online), And, constructing envelope at back of sketchbook to store extras and repurpose junk mail! Can’t wait to collage draw with you. Thank you Koosje

We collect so much paper from packaging, envelopes, and other daily things… No need to buy ephemera if you look around. I agree! Have fun.

I saw an interesting collage the other day An artist had taken sn image they liked maybe from a magazine or something. They glued that to the left hand page of their sketchbook. Then on the right hand side, they tried to recreate that image. It came out really close. The colors were pretty much perfect I might try that method to break the ice and get started
