You got me thinking, "Huh... maybe that's why I never finish my large sketchbooks." I finish my small ones no problem, but I struggle with my large ones. Instead, my large sketchbooks that were intended for more detailed pieces become just occasional doodles and practice, and my small sketchbooks that were intended for occasional doodles and practice became detailed pieces. Anyways, great video! Super relatable

I love how excited you are! I think you're right that you need a small notebook for a go-to default practice. I definitely would encourage you, though, to keep the other one in mind. There may be times when you do want to do a larger piece, and #4 will still be there for you. #4.5 is clearly really important for you and I'm so glad you have it! But you might find that having #4.5 available to meet these needs will free up a part of you that sometimes also wants large format dreams. It sounds to me like you want to dream those large format dreams. You maybe just didn't realize they were not a replacement for the small format expressions that had already become fundamental to your being. You don't have to full-on abandon the large notebook. You just need to respect that it can't meet all your needs.
@thelastcoffeebean2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment! 🧡 I definitely agree with you, I sometimes LOVE working large scale, but for practice and fun stuff I like sticking to paper less than 8x10. I think if I ever want to draw something big, I’d use #4, OR I’d try out something different like Canvas or watercolour paper! 🙌🏼
@Zephlett2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. You bought the larger format sketchbook for a reason. I think it's great that you realized it isn't everything you need, but that doesn't mean it's nothing. Sometimes the storytelling norms of our culture push us to look for decisive answers that are the be-all-end-all. You watch these videos and think you have to reach a conclusive answer every time you art about a problem. But as you noticed recently, you can get good things out of an experience without that being a final solution. Maybe instead of saying this feels nice I'm going to do this same thing forever, we could try this feels nice and I'll add it to my repertoire occasionally.

Best sketchbook advice I ever heard is that you do not need to start at the beginning of the sketchbook, and you do not have to go front to back in order. Just open and draw. Also, as someone who loves larger sketchbooks and struggles with smaller ones, I feel your pain. Having the wrong size kills the vibe.
@caramelize45642 жыл бұрын
oh man, i really agree with the 'if you have art block, maybe switch sketchbooks' thing!! a few months ago a sketchbook I had was just. so bad it prompted me into a three month long art block. only figured out it was because of the sketchbook and not anything else bc I tried using that sketchbook again (only finished half of it the first go) and the artblock hit even worse than before! :D sometimes you just need to experiment w/ ur supplies

Honestly I wouldn't call the sketchbook abandoned, I'd just say it's resting!!! Someday your fervour and need for it will come back, and there it'll be, just waiting 🥺❤️

Keep the bigger book and work in it off and on through out the year. Maybe it won’t feel so daunting. I’ve got about 7 different sketchbooks going right now. They are for different things. One of them is my ‘Big Ass Book’ it has 300 pages. My goal is to eventually fill it. I have small ones I take everywhere with me. I also have ones I use to make more complete compositions and a couple of them are very specific subjects. Hey! most importantly is to step away from watching others’ social media! Because it makes you feel like you need to do what others are, you do your thing. Plus staying away from so much social media will help you stay original and not subconsciously stray from your own style. Keep up the awesome work, you’ve got great talent! Remember to create for yourself first, that’s what being an artist is all about!

I honestly thought I was just losing my lobe for art’s day it’s all because of self pressure. I totally get abandoning sketchbooks due to their size. My comfort size is the Moleskine A6, due to the fact that I draw so much better on a smaller canvas, and I don't have the looming pressure of 'not using the most of my potential' since a smaller size is very forgiving. Just because you don't finish a sketchbook in one shot doesn't mean there is something wrong, or that you're being wasteful. That book will still be there for you to revisit in the future, and even if you never revisit it, always remember that you did use it. You stuck with it for a bit even when you weren't comfortable and ended up making some very pretty drawings regardless. A sketchbook isn't 'finished' when you finish the book, it's finished when YOU feel that your journey with the book is done, even if it means finishing ten pages.

IDK if you will see this; but I am an artist for work as well and I was struggling the first few years with art block. I realized something though and maybe you will notice tooo- When I have an art block it is hard not to be upset at myself for being unproductive. I then realized though, usually when I rest and come back to it, my art has improved a LOT. Then I thought about it- When a battery is 100%, and doubles in size, the 100% is actually 50%. That means that it needs X amount of time to charge up to 100% again. I think when we have art blocks, our skill is improving, and the "inability" to create is actually our selves now recalibrating and recharging a new amount, so that we can be incredible after the battery charge :)

I've been keeping 2 at once. I have a small square I bought for like 6 bucks and a large one the size of the big one you have. I use the small one when I go out or want a "junk" sketchbook. i do love a small sketch book that I can take anywhere I go, but sometimes I just need more space. I have handful on sketchbooks on the go currently; I like some more than others. I still want to use them up because I bought them, and it would be a waste of paper. For the sketchbook I care less about, is the one I probably use the most since I normally just plan my actual art in there and use it for practice alone. I care less about how the pages look and I don't bother erasing/covering up bad sketches. It's nice to have a "dump book".

I love smaller sketchbooks too. I had a very huge one (as big as a laptop completely opened) and I didn't use it for months. I would have to do really big drawings which I would end up never finishing. I eventually found good use for it and that was the practice life drawing. But whenever I want to draw stuff just for me I prefer smaller pages as it just feels finished easier (and I tend to leave a lot of empyt spaces in general).

I eventually even taped in some of those pages in my new sketchbook since I did love them so much and I didn’t want them to be tucked away As for the spiral bound sketchbook now I use it as my dream journal :3

I ended up switching for my 3rd moleskin and it was the BEST for me personally. It was easier to fill in especially when I didn’t have much time to draw in it during finals, also it fit better into my backpack, and was less intimidating to start/finish. Downsizing definitely makes you unsure at first but in the long run it can be more enjoyable working with a small area rather than feeling bad for not filling in a large one!!! I love all the artworks you made in this spread! *-* those blood splatters! Ahhhh! Also, this video truly gave something to ponder on. I am currently using an A4 sketchbook, haha. And the fun part is that I wanted it to be BIG, because the previous one was ordered from Amazon and I thought it was an A5, but turned out to be even smaller (it's my bad for not double-checking that) and I LOVE details, and I also have as a goal to draw less portraits and more full bodies. So I basically went from too small straight to too big. Such an extreme decision, I know, and I usually like to stay in the grey area, because I generally believe that extremism is never good, but once again I failed in my good intentions. Now I'm stuck with this big Boi, and some days I like it, some days I don't. I can start a sketch on a day, leave it there for a week, pick it up and start changing some stuff, let it sit for another couple of weeks and I'm really starting to be bored of it, so I move on, and then one day out of the blue I decide that I want to color it. Well, put like that sounds like I'm the unstable villain of this situation xD anyway, thank you for sharing your thoughts and your decision process, it's going to provide some good advice in case I start wishing to stop using it xD (ATM I'm not sure because I'm in the "I like it" phase right now!) but your enthusiasm truly feels contagious!

I did the same thing on my bday was thinking about and I felt bad but I wasn't gonna keep a sketchbook that long but then I had this small one I did in 16 day and I thought about that and I had artblock so I put a sticky note of the date I ended just incase I go back inside. and I was wasn't happy using an a school notebook sorry if that sounds weird but I was trying to break into art again when school was over so that's why and now I don't regret it. :)

I am actually at the end of my sketchbook #4 and I’m 18 pages away from finishing but it’s taken me a week to even sketch anything because I’ve gotten so burnt out. I’ve been scrapbooking in it now just to get pages finished. I’m hoping I can sketch some stuff soon because I don’t want the rest of my sketchbook to be just scrapbooking 😓

How do I get to that point in my artistic skills to be able to draw a pose without reference? 😭 anyways it looks amazing I think switching sketchbooks was definitely a good idea 💗

practice! there’s a good class on the drawfee extra channel about it, but say like. 15 minutes of drawing a bunch of different poses from reference (using a site like line of action) and then another 15 minutes of drawing a bunch of poses from imagination. i do that like once a week-ish?

I have 2 unfinished sketchbooks that I feel forced to finish. I have been wanting the Illo sketchbook (same size as her) for so long now. And guess what? On top of all of that I have art block.

i also have this problem with my sketchbook. i like the size but i think it's the paper that annoys me alot,it's almost gray-ish like it's not pure white. i want to get a new sketchbook but i'm just scarred.

I really needed to hear thins! :) And I love your sketches too! ^^ Iv recently got a sketchbook about the same size and I find it alot easier to draw and take with me, event though Im better at digital art than traditional lol. I want to bring back that joy I had of sketching back in highschool in a way also~

woah i had the exact same problem! First i bought the big moleskine sketchbook, i liked it, i used it, but then my mom bought me a illo sketchbook (i live in germany so it was really expensive, like 35€-40€ just for shipping o.O) , so i finished my illo sketchbook (the best sketchbook i had so far) and i wanted to finish my big moleskine sketchbook, i had like 30 pages left, but suddenly it was way too big for me and i had so much pressure to finish the big pages so i just bought the little moleskine one too (idk but in german amazon its just 13€)
