I was one of the people who was never encouraged to follow my artistic dream. I was pushed into a teaching career just because my sister was a teacher. It did not matter to my parents that I loved art and wanted to have a career in art. Now at age 57 I am finally coming back to art.

My dad suggested computers to me. But while buried in math and computer classes, I could feel like my brain wasn't balanced. I instinctively went to the bookstore, got a sketchbook, and spent all afternoon drawing in nature. Felt much better after.

Your story sounds so similar to mine! I finished high school and wanted to do a visual arts course, but my well-meaning mother told me there was no money in that you should be a teacher, like she and my aunt were. I’ve been teaching for over 30 years now and am just coming back to my art now! It’s such a good feeling - have fun and enjoy!

I love seeing other people's sketchbooks. My mother's an artist so I basically grew up with a pencil in my hand. I drew on and off for years and it wasn't until highschool where we actually started to learn the fundamentals and basic techniques I started taking it seriously and started keeping a sketchbook. Now I've basically been drawing every day for the past 10 years and couldn't imagine living without it. Cause it's not just the drawing but it's genuinely changed the way I see things. like I used too look at things. But now I SEE things, and I think that's why I love this channel so much cause this is what it encourages

Back in my youth and traveling the hemisphere, I wish i had even thought about drawing the experience. Back in the day, I didn't have a camera, and was very lucky to have had a foster Dad who wanted me to see a little of the world. It was such an experience to learn about other cultures and bred a deeper, stronger love for America. Thanks to Google, I can get pics of some of the places, but not all. I had a written journal that burned in our house fire. Wish I had that, too. AMaking these pages that look like they are out of a magazine just totally flumuxes me.

Good luck! Just remember while you are working so hard to get those degrees never stop your own art practices. That is what will make you a magnificent teacher. Knowing and understanding the struggles and joys of expressing yourself through your art is the key to teaching others to make art and to live a life of creativity. Passion and excitement are contagious.

Thank you Danny and Janis for this wonderful film about sketch book art. I learned a lot and came away inspired. Janis has the most fantastic sketch books - it was a privilege to see her work - and I just loved the book about Millie the corgi. It made me laugh out loud. I really look forward to joining Spark, hopefully soon and taking advantage of Janis's knowledge and inspiration. I love everything she said about watercolor and feel it has done so much for me, just as a person to play with it. So much about acceptance and self-forgiveness, the lack of which often holds us back in art . . . and in life.

What is frustrating about online courses is that they are so expensive. Spark is $130 a month, probably in U.S. dollars. That is a huge chunk of change and WAY beyond my means. I was part of another group that I loved last year that I loved and was considerably less than this, but I had to leave after a few months because it was getting so expensive. I was heartbroken.

@@bjgoels Hey Brenda, just looking back at some of the recent replies to this interview. I am so sorry that SBS doesn't fit into your budget right now. But please don't get discouraged. I want to encourage you to make art every day even if you can't take a class. Play with your art materials. Sketch and doodle and draw and paint very simple things at first. Paint the same thing over and over, and you will see your improvement. Sometimes it's 2 steps forward and one step backward. Don't worry about your mistakes or if you think it looks bad. Don't throw anything away. Over time you will see your artwork is improving and you are growing on your own. You can be self-taught. It may take longer but you will grow and learn. Keep going. As we say at SBS, "It's all about the journey." Have fun. (Take a look at Van Gogh's early paintings.)
