I've been using Loomis for about 7 years. As a beginner moves through his/her practice (to gain skill, you must practice as close to everyday as possible)) you'll find that the linear guides Rusty is using will be more understood than actually on the paper. You'll visualize the lines rather than draw them. However, when my skills begin to deteriorate (which mine will do, especially if I stop practicing) I always go back to actually drawing the lines and the techniques Rusty is demonstrating in this video. Great vid, by the way. I'm subscribing.
@prof_nelson2 ай бұрын
Yep, that is right. As you practice, the "guidelines" become less visual and more of a shorthand for establishing the proportions and structure of the pose. Drawing figures is a perishable skill, you have to do it daily to stay tuned up and able to draw them with confidence. I'm currently practicing my figure drawing fundamentals in preparation for my next Loomis tutorial... coming soon.

Hello Rusty!New subscriber here. My art teacher tried teaching me this while I was very young. She actually lived to be 104 years old a few years ago. She once gave me book on similar methods and it looks about the same but it’s a different author-someone by the name Rune Hagman and some other author. I found it a few years ago and had to open it back up. Time to get my supplies out again!

I like your break down for this tutorial. Since I started drawing I’ve only allowed myself to draw from my head and only using pen learning to draw other than life drawing/ blind contours and all of the fundamentals I’ve learned along the way are all falling in place after years of scribbling on computer paper. I’ve never made an actual piece of art other than when I took a drawing class but I hated sitting and drawing from life since they would take 15 hours to finish and the sun would always move so the light and shadows was always tricky. I don’t know how some artist can put in hundreds of hours into a single piece especially realism art since you could just take a photo and save yourself years of your time 🤣 I am just starting to get back into drawing again after a 6 year hiatis but I’ve strangely gotten better since then. I’ve never told or shown anyone my drawings since I never finish anything and the only time I did draw in front of others I was called a bunch of names like show off and quit not long after. I’m glad that you are sharing this and helping others to learn how to properly draw instead of referencing a photo. I’ve never used a photo for reference because it always has felt like I’m cheating myself and not actually understanding the forms. Drawing from life is much more satisfying and makes you feel accomplished when you start more accurate and you can see your progress in real time and become more observant and understanding. I am still nowhere close to being as good as I want to be but that is the beauty of drawing, I’ll always have something more to learn and strive for to integrate into my doodles.
@prof_nelson3 күн бұрын
Yeah, I don't have the patience for really long drawings and paintings any more. You might as well shoot a photo (I am a recovering photorealist). As a professional designer, I don't believe there is anything that can be called "cheating". With any process - form life, or photos, or imagination... you are learning something that can get you to your end result. Have fun drawing and painting.

Love your comment about older people being easier to draw. Not sure about easier but more interesting. In my early life drawing classes we had a wonderful, very overweight middle aged mother of 2 teen daughters. She not only held her pose well, chat about all sorts but was wonderful to draw. All those curves. Then we had a temporary replacement. A younger, firm toned lady, also a mother but not at all as interesting to draw. We missed the imperfections.

In my own work I have found it easiest to use the thumb and pencils method and build my mannequin base for my life drawing or photo to get proportions right. Then I do several mannequins of the intended subject and lay down gestural studies quickly in order to get a feel for the character of the face and what details most define their likeness. Once I have these I will decide on my composition, if I am not drawing from life, then I will do several rough measurements to make sure the portrait will be framed. Then I can begin building out the final cartoon and laying in quick values. I also read the Andrew Loomis books when I was a young man and I am sure I stole this method though I can't recall from whom. It works well for me, though. 🙂

Having gone to art school and done a few portraits myself and what not, I can say, Everything you've learned about divided a face into quadrants where the nose, mouth, chin, eyes etc. are a certain distant apart is helpful. But If you've ever lived in Maine or Wyoming you'll realize it's all pretty arbitrary. Sometimes you might need to add a dash of Lord of The Rings to your portrait.
