Agree with some of the comments here. The knight looks pretty out of shape. Perhaps another tutorial to make better looking ones with beginner skills in mind. Anyway, it is still good video to grasp some technique; especially making the component. Thks !

The previous chess videos are pretty good (the pawn through the queen). The queen could use a few modifications, but that's more a personal preference. The knight/horse in this video, however, needs a lot of work. It looks more like a child's rendering rather than that of a professional. The pieces may not be Staunton pieces, but they don't have to be. Is there any way to put up a video showing how to make a better knight? Perhaps a video showing how to make multiple variations of this piece, all of which more closely resemble a horse?

To those, who struggle to create the component at 1:26. I had that problem 3 month ago (see post of Peter Poggi). Today I came back and gave it another try and found out, the issue was that sketchup didnt create a component (although the dialog showed up). The problem was that I had to set the flag "Replace selection with component" in the make-component dialogue.

Do that ^ and make sure u hold option when you push/pull and that you are inside the component (of the arc) when you do the option + pull ... I didnt see it double both sides but when I clicked outside the component it showed both sides.... idk if that helps

Hi Aaron, Thanks again for your excellent tuto! sorry to ask question about a video that's been released some 2.5 years ago, but I wonder why you haven't downloaded a picture of the knight piece and model your piece following the model. Watching all the scetchup tutorials before downloading the free version and try it out. I don't understand why there are people who dislike these videos :/ because they're awesome! Very helpful and just from watching I can already go ahead and tell what you're going to say and do. That tells me these videos are well made and explained. Thank you for that.

Great videos for building skill with sketchup. My only problem is that the narrator uses the plural form of the word axis, axes (pronounced "ax-eez") for both the plural and singular. They are axis (singular) and axes (plural), pronounced "ax-iss" and "ax-eez", respectively. You don't say "one 'ax-eez'" for the same reason you don't say "one bananas": "ax-eez" is plural.

Same problem as below at about 1:26 with creating the component, would not join with the original as group or component and push/pull wouldn't grab both or treat the other half as a component. All the other pieces look fine, this one not so much... otherwise a good watch for the theory.

There’s some problems here firstly I have clicked the box saying Replace Selection with component when making the first section of the curve on the base a Component - as suggested below. Now I have a blue rectangle round the selected area like in the video. But still I cannot figure out how to push pull both of the sections up at the same time like it does in the video. I’m using Sketchup desktop app 2018 it’s different from the above version. I’ve spent 3 hours on it so I’m giving up.

R N Evans Don’t give up! It’s hard to figure exactly what your problem is by passing comments back and forth on KZbin. Can you hop over to our forum (forums.sketchup.com) and post your file, as it is? From there I am sure we can figure out how to get your model working!

I've been successful with all the previous Chess pieces but this one eludes me. Cannot do it either online or with Sketchup Maker. I can make the "Half of a Knight" arc base component, but cannot seem copy & join them together to pull them up as a single unit. I'm overlooking some crucial step but cannot figure out what it is.

Hi Peter! The initial half of the knight is selected and made into a Component. This component is then copied and "reversed" using the Scale command. From that point on, all editing happens to one half of the knight, as the component causes both halves to be updated, simultaneously.

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm good with creating the arc+line half and making it into a component. I'm good with the copy, and the scale to -1. However when I move it back to join up with the first half it behaves differently than in your example. When you click to select the original half, it selects the Component. I can tell because at 2:27 when you select it, the boundary box shows 3d depth. But when I select it the first side, I'm not catching the Component. Only the outer line and surface get selected. I can pull it up, but the copied/scaled side doesn't move. So I'm not getting the Component I made. It's at that exact spot that I'm doing something different than you are

It sounds like you have a group, rather than a component.

No, definitely using component. I suspect that I'm either creating it, or attempting to re-select it, incorrectly. Update: It was how I selected it the component after the copy. I don't know exactly what I did differently, but as soon as I saw the 3d bound box I knew I had it - and now on to shaping my knight. Thank you!

hi there, i've got the same issue. I think the problem is at minute 1:40 after you clicked create component. In your case the component is still selected and in my case it is not. I tried it about 20 times, and was 1 time successful (the blue rectangle was visible). And i was able to do the rest. I saved it and tried it again without luck. I think the problem is, the whole thing wont work, when - after clicking on create - the new component isnt selected any more. If I click on the "compenent" it doesnt show the blue rectangle of a component. (however the component was created and can be found under my components in the default tray. Now I tried it again and again, but it doesnt work. May be you have a suggestion.

I guess another easy way is to use curves/arcs and soap bubbles extension. I didn't try it but I think so. However, I've noticed you are kind of addicted to SketchUp native tools.

We love Soap Skin and Bubble. You could also use Artisan or SUbD! However... As this is in SketchUp Free, Aaron only had native tools available!

All UI is the same (Mac or Windows) as this is the web-based version of SketchUp. Your Display panel should be the same place as Aaron's!

"Chevalier" is the French name for the Knight piece. Chevalier also means horse. From the Age of Chivalry.

Cheval means horse, chevalier (literally: "the one riding the horse") means knight. (btw, I'm french)

The other tutorials in this series are awesome. This one, however, jumps from "Here's a clever trick" to /r/therestofthefuckingowl with no apologies, and then tacks on some awful music as salt in the wound.
