Check for water in your gas tank. I see at the beginning of your video that you have a plastic bag covering your gas cap. Assuming that your gas cap has a cracked or missing lens and your float level assembly has fallen in the tank (very common) and left a hole for water to infiltrate, I would definitely drain the tank completely into a clear container to check for water and go from there. I would do this sooner rather than later for the health of your 600. Not the DESS. After starting and the MPEM recognizes a programmed tether, you're good to go, and it will not affect performance.

@Jeremy Rhydes my very first thoughts were bad fuel, fouled plugs, dirty power valves, dirty carbs or throttle cable, cracked carb boots. I know on my sled in my throttle block there is a small throttle pin switch attached to my killswitch. I only noticed this as I was switching out to an RSI aluminum throttle block and I researched what it was for. Alot of the times on older sleds time takes a toll and causes that pin to wear out, hope this helps!

When I was 15 in the late 90s I too wanted this. I bought a used one in about this condition when I was 34. 3 years later I bought a second one. Now I have a 1999 and a 2003. I spent more to maintain them every few years than they are worth. This year it cost me 1700 to repair their issues. To me this guy appears to be having Carb issues, not a tether issue. The tether should cause the light to blink. He can fix that with a pencil eraser usually.

@@IbocC64 what was the most expensive parts to keep them maintained?
@IbocC64
@IbocC64 6 ай бұрын
@@theblishknovk The most expensive part was the 2 carb boots for the 2003 MXZ 600H.O.. On the H.O. models you have to change the Reed Valves with the Carb Boot because they are one solid unit instead of separate pieces like on the regular 600s. The carb boots with reeds were around $260 each and I needed 2 of them. I also needed a carb cleaning, tune up, trail ready maintenance, a new front bumper and a new kill switch. That one came to $1200. The 1999 MXZ 600 was much cheaper. It only needed carb boots, ski alignment, suspension adjustment (to reduce tipsiness), a tune up and trail ready maintenance. That one was $500. Dealer charges $130 for service. If you can avoid it, don't go to the dealer. Do the repairs you need at the end of the season or during the early summer to reduce parts costs and avoid paying a dealer to wrench on the machine. The reason I brought them in was because I couldn't get the 2003 to stop overheating and I didn't have time wrench on them myself. BTW, if any of you have a ski-doo newer than 2000 and it always runs hot on the edge of overheating, yes change the carb boots, but also check your carb heat valve. You don't need carb heat unless your carbs are icing up. If they aren't iced up, you will end up boiling the gas in your carb bowls, pre-heating the air-fuel mix and causing the cylinders to run very hot. I picked up a 2002 MXZ renegade about 4 weeks ago. Same issue. Carb heat was on. Make sure you check your prospective machine closely. If they are only charging $500 to $1000 its going to have some serious issues. I have put about $1200 in to repairing it myself and its not done. I have a track and new ski's to put on next. This was beat. The only reason I bought it is because it runs great and all the electronics work. For $500 that is about as good as you can hope for. But if you are willing to spend $1500 you can usually find one in good shape that would simply need a seat or something simple like that.

@@IbocC64 sounds like its almost better to buy them cheap and ride til they die then just buy another one. Haha. Guess u cant trust is far into the bush that way though. Thats def a steep cost. Just got ny first sled. She's a bit rough but runs and rides.
@IbocC64
@IbocC64 6 ай бұрын
@@theblishknovk While I could ride it as it is, its probably not the safest. The skis were ground down and didn't even have any carbide or even runners left. The track is dry rotted and is missing as many lugs as it has in tact. The carb boots are dry rotted. The hood straps are dry rotted. The limit straps in the skid were cut. The throttle lever is broken at the bottom hinge point. The tool kit was missing. The seat was torn to shreds. The hood and headlight were heavily oxidized. The windshield was broken off. There was a cracked rave valve cover. The DESS post was missing its mounting nut so it was just floating in the dash hole. 303 Aerospace protectant took all the paint off the idiot lights so I had to swap those out. These are the issues one can expect when the seller says "Runs good but needs some work". On the up side, I got all that purchased and almost all installed for about $1200 which means by the time I am done I will have about $1700 in this machine, but it will be in good shape again. I only ride maybe 100 to 200 miles a season so this machine, even with almost 8000 miles will last me years as I have 4 machines now. (I got a 1994 Mach 1 for free the other day).

It is definitly cutting out on one cylinder. The DESS key would not cause only one cylinder cutting out. I'd replace the sparkplugs and if it still does it you might have something like a bad coil. Really sounds like I'ts intermittently fouling a plug so could be really rich on one side aswell. Check for stuck float valves too. That would cause similar symptoms.
@Rodeo32145

I’ve seen so many plugged jets in these. It’s accumulated total fuel, a plugged pilot plus a partial plugged needle needle jet will run pretty lean. Especially at half throttle. Main jet is just starting to add fuel and it’s not enough to keep combustion cool. So you get scored piston skirts and low compression on the affected cylinder. So all the jets need to flow fuel to get correct air fuel ratio at all throttle positions.

It's not the DESS system. the key and post function more like an on/off switch. it's either in limp mode, or not, it shouldn't produce a bog even if it's misaligned. If it gets out of limp mode with some adjustment (meaning is able to go above 3k rpm) then it should be fine on the DESS side of it. It could still be computer related, but i would started doing other diag just related to the bog. if it comes and goes, i would guess fuel or maybe a stuck RAVE system on one side.

Definitely start by checking spark on both cylinders. Maybe you are lucky and it’s just some bad gas but I would definitely start by checking spark

Could also be clutching too. But with any sled. It's hard to pinpoint the exact issue with them unless you're there in person. Could be an electric issue. One way you could test it the tether is to cross the wires across just for testing purposes. Use it around a little. See if bog persists. If not, replace tether. Power valves are also a possibility, like you said. But not knowing the sleds history is hard to exactly say what the issue is unless you know what does have an issue and what has already been checked/replaced. Keep up the good videos. I always enjoy them they are very entertaining. Some other guys with sled videos on KZbin are kind of boring, not knocking them they could be pretty cool. But your videos so far have been the best.

My 94 indy 500 efi was doing the same thing. It ended up bogging so bad that it left me stranded roadside and I had to trailer home. A year later found out it was a broken piston skirt. On a two stroke you can have good compression in both cylinders and still have a broken piston skirt. To find out you need to take off the exhaust y pipe and feel in with your fingers, or take off the carbs or in my case throttle body and do the same for the other side of pistons. Without the skirt you wont be able to suck the fuel up to spark plugs and no boom for you in that cylinder. I checked everything from tps to fuel injectors before I found that out.

In my experience a loose tether will only cause it to not rev up to clutch engagement it won't cause you to drop a cylinder. It could be as simple as a loose spark plug boot. It definitely sounds like a spark issue based on it coming in and out. I had an Indy do that and it was just a bad plug wire boot.

I have a 1999 and a 2003. The 1999 is carbureted and does this every time water gets in the gas. The 2003 is EFI and always runs great but has a 3000rpm idle for some reason. It has never seemed to have a water in the gas problem like the 1999 always does. To test this get a nice flat, straight run like a like and open it up. Wait for it to bog, then play with the key. If it has no effect or random effect it could just be chance. Try hitting your choke for a second or two. I think you will find it stops bogging an opens up again for a few seconds. For me this was from water trapped the fuel pump. Also I only use Ethanol free gas in my sleds. Its sold locally for this purpose. I still get water in the 1999 MXZ every couple years. Never in the 2003 with fuel injection though.
