Just wanted to pass along a thank you. I tried it last night to remove the clutch on my SWT800 and it work great ,No hammering on the clutch just pop off like a dream. It took two attempts as the first attemp I wrapped the teflon on the wrong way. Thanks again for posting this

This trick works really well. I started out using the puller tool just to see how tight in might be. I cranked so hard on it that I thought I was about to break the tool. I torqued the bolt while I was holding the clutch with my hand. I got it fairly tight ad was just reaching down for the clutch holder tool when the clutch popped right off! I found that if I tapered the teflon tape so it was thicker further up the threads it worked great.

All I can say is wow. This works amazing.I did it exactly like your vid and it worked perfectly.I tightened it up and was just about there. I stopped to re grip, and it suddenly popped off. Thanks for saving me $25 on the tool!!

This was AWESOME and very cool. I am going to try this tonight. I recently took a blown engine out of my 2000 Skandic, and swapped it with my like new engine out of my 1980 Everest 500. Everything bolted right up, quite amazing really. We just have to remove the clutch off the blown to install on the good...Thanx Again!

Wow! worked like a champ on my Rotax 670 clutch! I wouldnt have believed it unless I saw it for myself. I started with the tool which wasnt working. Tried your trick and like you said just as I was thinking I might need a second set of hands to hold the clutch while I tightened the bolt BAM it popped off.

Another thanks! I mentioned this to a buddy of mine who does lots of clutches, he recommended oil, and said he doesn't like to fill it all the way up, he adds oil in stages so that the bolt is in a few threads before it starts to hydraulic. He's worried about stripping the threads otherwise. I'm not sure if that would be a problem, the fluid likely leaks past the threads until it's in a few anyway. Not complaining, just another thought on it... Again, thanks, I'm going to try it.

This method works aswell with no threads but removing a pilot bearing on a crank too -If you put a rope in the plug hole to keep the engine from turning helps lots when turning in the bolt . Good idea forgot about this method .

theres a similar trick but it consists of a grease gun instead of water. you simply need adapters to mount a grease fitting to the clutch and add pressure with a grease gun. a grease gun can reach insane ammounts of pressure. i thought some of you might want to know in case the water trick didnt work.

@skierfe no! You can use just a bolt but it has to thread into your clutch not your crank like the bolt that is in there now does

The Polaris clutch cannot be removed the same way. I just read many comments below asking. Don't try, as it results many times in snapping off the bolt down inside.

the teflon catches the threads on the clutch and make pressure that pops the clutch off.. right..not the threads in the crank wich holds the clutch on, correct.

Awesome trick. I can see the key point is having a clutch and clutch bolt that has the same threads as the crank, otherwise it won't work. (ie you have to unscrew the bolt through two different segments when unscrewing it) Does anyone know if the newer e-drive clutches on some of the BRP four strokes work with this method? If the clutch puller is the same than the water trick should work too..

The only reason the water trick won't work is if you don't get the teflon tape put on good enough to seal in the pressure.

The secondary is not a tapered shaft and should slide off easily. If it doesn't then your shaft is rusty and you need to use penetrating oil.

Will this work for a Polaris sled also?
@davyjones365
@davyjones365 6 жыл бұрын
The Skidoo internal clutch threads are the same as in the crank , so you are compressing the water from the clutch threads to the crank end. With a Polaris drive clutch, the clutch hold on bolt won't work, the clutch internal threads are much bigger. With a Polaris puller, you could use the water trick, but you have to make sure you get enough treads started in the clutch before it starts pushing hard , so you don' strip threads ,same as in a Skidoo. In 2001 & earlier , Polaris clutches ( maybe later as well ) the drive clutch internal threads are 3/4-16 ( fine ) . I have made my own puller for these before. I buy a grade 8 hex head bolt, 2 to 2 1/2 " long, ( with the longest thread length possible). The later sleds with a hole in the belly pan , you can use whatever length 3/4-16 ( fine ) bolt with a good amount of threads, to push against the spacer. With the clutch bolt removed , you measure from the end of the crankshaft to the inside beginnings of the internal threads of the clutch. You make a ( grade 8 ) 5/8" diameter spacer that length plus 1/4" to push on the crank , with the 3/4-16 bolt. As with the Skidoo , the regular , or this type puller takes alot of grunt to pop the clutch. I had not thought of using water.... I have used 10 squirts of grease from a grease gun, inserted spacer , tighted bolt, and it comes off much easier. Yes , more clean up. But the taper of my cranks , or internal taper of my clutches never show signs of rust. I just clean em up good , and have never had a clutch slip or gall on the crank end either. I've always just used 10 pumps of grease in the Skidoos also , inserted the regular puller bolt , and off they come. They pop more the this guy showed on the video...because I've always used an impact gun. I'm always a bit gun shy when they pop. I always put a good sized rag between clutch and belly pan on older sleds, or ready to catch the clutch with a gloved hand. I have never used the teflon tape trick , with grease It always worked without. Teflon tape would really help the threads though, Iwould think. On the spacer , you don't want to use much more than 5/8" diameter , even at that I used too soft of spacer once and it almost smashed the end enough to swell into the interal threads of the clutch ,next to the pusher bolt. ( I think that was before I started using grease to make it so much easier). Good luck , Davy.
