Even to the point of having an "excellent example of of Stener lesion: according to the surgeon who was showing it off to the surgery Intern and the others in the OR. I have had it repaired and and now am waiting for it to heal. Any therapy suggestions to restore strength and Range of motion?

@jsmotherearth73 жыл бұрын
I completely ruptured my right UCL while roller skating. I knew something was wrong when I tried to grasp the wall and my thumb was completely painful to the minor task, upon self examination, my thumbs range of motion was beyond 45°. A splint was given first in the E.R the same night and later a cast to stabilize, had surgery of which the Dr. braced and sutured the ligament to help with return of gripping strength. This video helped me to understand better the process he performed. Paraffin wax treatments after the stitches were removed helps exponentially in wound healing, along with gradual increase of tension hand exercises and when resting to have those squishy toys to rebuild muscle tissue to prevent stiffness.

My doctor says that there was nothing to indicate such a condition on the ultrasound imaging. She said my continuing pain when using the thumg is simply age related arthritis (58) but before the fall/accident I had no such impaiment. Several months later it is only marginally better. Could skiers thumb be hard to detect on an ultrasound????
@ernietollar407 Жыл бұрын
@@user-tu5lg5zr2f I don't recall my Dr. mentioning any such narrowing. I would say it is after 7-8 months finally somewhat better . I still favour the other hand (my R) for strength oriented grasping which I would normally have done with the left. could it be a cause which is part t the age related asteoarthrits and part a skier's thumb injury.... but that I'l eventually be pretty much recovered. I do consider that although the injury seemed to surface after the wrestling accident, that i have been using that thumb for years back stretched for the holes of a large bamboo transverse flute, so maybe there is some osteoporosis / build up that was quite ignorable but became noticable after the skier's thumb injury event

Gamekeeper's thumb could be called washerwoman's thumb in my case. I sprained my right thumb very badly about two yrs ago, never went to the dr. It always hurt a little since then. Today I pulled it again the same way. Washing clothes by hand and wringing a heavy towel by hand can injure your ulnar ligament pretty badly.Now I know. Ouch.
@gailhonadle51829 жыл бұрын
+hollisterpatricia I think we could give it a lot of names, I'd call it Quilter's thumb and forefinger and the one to the right of it. There are very swollen knots, and atrophy in the space between the two digits. Ortho says only surgery to replace the joints would fix the issue, IT does not go away in 6 months, it just gets worse over time. Now my left hand is starting to develop it. Bouchard nodes in all the fingers are caused by Osteoarthritis. In my case all of it is arthritis and over use of the thumb and forefinger, I've not quilted in 4 years and the pain and swelling are still there. PT won't help, so don't waste your time. And OA drugs kill by GI tract. As do the OTC meds for pain. Tylenol will get your liver. The rest you GI Tract.

No surgery is straight forward and ended up with 2 screws in the base joint which froze the thumb. Hard cast crushed the wrist nerves and damaged the index finger, the tendons are drawn and the finger is stiff. Fine motor skills are limited, and it is my dominant hand.More women have this issue than men. Left is now doing the same only double joint trigger lock. Can anyone comment on whether level of pain dictates whether the ligament is completely ruptured and needs surgery? I fell on thumb 3 weeks ago and without a splint, it is 50% better. A physio alerted me to the long term consequences of leaving it and advised MRI scan immediately. Am getting a splint tomorrow - wondered whether pain is a good indication or not?
@brandonsylvia62143 жыл бұрын
Mine did not hurt that bad , It "felt better" over time but still hurts to this day because I thought it was getting better ... If I wore a brace or a cast immediately or sooner it would healed properly. Its been a year and a half for me and my ligament is still partially torn. I suggest you immediately wear a brace 24 hours a day, for 6 weeks. Otherwise you will have chronic pain, or need surgery or have to live with it like me. Get an MRI to know what exactly your dealing with. If you have partial tear , it can heal with the immobilization and brace . If its completely torn you may need surgery.

How's your pain and injury now? Mine was injured 4months+ ago, kept pain and swollen joint on the 2nd joint from the thumb tip, but the entire bone on the thumb is pressed pain though not more severe than the 2nd joint. The wrist connected to also seemed pain somehow, that whole area around thumb is uncomfortable. Used variety of medicines kept at home, useless. Finally saw Dr. now with topical Diclofenac (Voltaren) 1% prescribed, applied 3-4 times/d in first 3 days, but still not stop the pain & can't move the thumb around, rather that joint turned red on the swollen area. Concerned it's the medicine's side effect, stopped a few days. Not sure anyone know if this strong medicine will cure the injury like it treats arthritis within a week or severe, in 2 wks or a bit longer? Your kindly response would be really appreciated! ❤️

@@lamontmcdaniels322, you can try paraffin wax treatments about two to three times a week, that'll pull fresh blood to the area and regenerate collagen supply. Get some squishy toys to grip and that'll help with the stiffness while aiding to rebuild your strength. Hope that helps. I completely ruptured my right UCL leaving my range of motion beyond 45°, I also received a splint and later a cast to stabilize my thumb while awaiting a date for surgery. My Dr. braced the sutured ligament: 1. To help with return of strength and 2. To help prevent re-injury in the future. I incorporated paraffin wax for wound healing, it exponentially worked, then I did increased tension hand exercises to rebuild the muscle outside of rehab therapy. Again, I hope this information helps you have less pain, swelling and a decrease in the stiffness and clicking of your thumb. Healing now may be slow, but baby steps still make it to the finish line.

+Jord Denniss It couldn't be from Playstation, because it requires stress to the tendon. Unless you're giving the death grip to your controller, it shouldn't be that reason. Surgery is usually the only way to fix this

@JB Denniss, I know this is a super long time to get some type of response, but I came across your question while doing more research of my own condition. It sounds like you're suffering from Carpal Tunnel from over repetition or you've strained your thumbs from the same. Try getting paraffin wax treatments to help with getting fresh blood and collagen to the area, also get some squishy toys to help rebuild strength to not only your thumbs, but your total hand as well.
