For downhill skiers, some days at Birds Of Prey don't go as planned. In 2006, former US Ski Team rising star TJ Lanning took a memorable fall but miraculously escaped without major injury. In this segment, he relives this epic crash and discusses the risks vs rewards downhill skiers face in their pursuit of speed.
While he is no longer racing, TJ is now an assistant speed coach for the US Ski Team using his hard-earned experience to help our boys go faster.
Check back every week for more #wipeoutwednesday clips and subscribe to our #InSearchOfSpeed KZbin account for never before seen footage from the FIS World Cup.

I can absolutely not blame him for wanting back on the skis ASAP, despite his many injuries. I'm an avid recreational skier. I have the app ski-tracks on my phone. It tracks your speed (max-speed, average speed etc). My record so far is 90 km/h; these guys go 140 km/h or more. The rush you get when flying down the slopes is an absolute thrill. The dopamine and adrenalin rush is better than you ever can imagine. It's like a drug, like an addiction.

I’m watching this after a knee injury. It’s pretty minor but It pisses me off so much that I can’t ski or swim. I don’t know how these guys are able to take such long breaks from sports that they devoted their lives to. I’m only an avg skier and an avg swimmer but it’s extremely hard to not be able to do either sport.

The compression forces. The skis are shaped kind of like a leaf spring in a car, so when those forces load up the ski and the spring “releases”, if you will, there is a ton of energy trying to launch you. Especially at those speeds. With his weight over the back of the skis he was unable to control the release of energy, popping him up into the air and causing him to twist. I’ve done this at far slower speeds and it’s a wild sensation. The skis contain so much energy at those speeds.

What I don't understand, in almost any sport there is innovation going on toward protection systems. But in Downhill and SuperG there is nothing since the introduction of the helmet. Even the neck don't gets better stabilization. And there would be some interesting protection systems, like on-demand airbags that could at leat protect the entire back, neck and head. It's not to understand why these were not tested and finally get as standard. 😞

Weird comment... Especially after watching this particular video. You saw a guy have his life saved by the safety nets. He walked away from a spectacular crash with just a broken wrist. Not bad considering he was probably going 75 mph and was launched into the air over 50m. Airbags protect against the devastating blunt force trauma which occurs inside a crashing car. It's nothing like that for these ski-racers. They're in clear space on a mountainside with nothing but their skis, poles and the snow-covered ground. Recreational skiers sometimes die from collisions with trees and rocks, but the ski-racers don't have these sorts of heavy collisions since the innovation of safety netting on the perimeter of racing courses. The more common ski racing injuries are broken legs and serious knee injuries from tumbling across the snow at high speeds (with or without their skis still attached.) Their limbs get caught in bad positions as they tumble and... SNAP! I can't think think of any possible protection against this. It's the hazard of skiing. If you go fast or if you don't land a jump, you can get hurt.

@@carlmarks8170 Yeah ur edge getting caught in the snow while ur sliding down is usually what fucks up ur knees, but ur edges need to grip the snow for you to even be able to ski, so there is no way to mitigate that effect rlly. This guy was lucky imo to hit that fence instead of the snow.

They do have airbags in addition to back protection that inflate should they hit the ground and it has helped averting injuries.
