Steamboat is one of my faves! Couple of downsides: 1) Attracts 100s of marginal skiers and doesn't actively dissuade them from taking the gondola, which means they can't get down (and often end up on a sled). 2) when you're back in Morningside, it's a LONG way to the bottom. Upsides: on powder days, more terrain than you can ski in days, 1000s of great lines.

@asajayunknown6290 Жыл бұрын
@@nathanvirgil5585 yes, but Why Not is a road, and they quickly tire of it and venture onto other trails above their abilities. I've discussed this point with some ski patrol friends. They've voiced the opinion that beginners should be banned from the gondola. For PR reasons they must keep their opinions to themselves. On the "up" side, the local hospital gets a ton of business.

@billkipper32642 жыл бұрын
@@alexivanov1211 And there goes the last of the really great tree skiing at Steamboat. Before Pony Express was built that area, known then as the "Middle Rib", had by far the best tree skiing in a ski area known for its tree skiing. The best thing was that you had to hike for it so it never got skied out. Developing that area turned it into a few steep, tight bump runs so the east coast skiers will feel at home. Nothing against bumps but it really did ruin that area.

I met my friend in Colorado this year for a 10 ski trip. He was out for the month. He called me from Steamboat and was not happy, no snow and the ice was worst than our home mountain of Killington, which is saying a lot. I was getting bummed because my last four trips out west have been very average. Fortunately the snow gods took pity on us and gave us a nice snow cycle. We skied A Basin, Copper and Winter Park. The snow was great. The snow you skied reminds me of the crap I have been skiing my last few trips out west which is not what I spend a boat load of money on. It really kills steep skiing. You have a very positive outlook. I think when you only go west once a year you expect more but as we know the weather is what is is. I also notice what you in the west think is cold we think is warm. I love the warmer temps as I often ski in negative numbers. Not a fan. Great video. When it comes to skiing timing is everything. First time I skied Steamboat I was 17. It had snowed 3 ft the night before and the local airport and roads had been closed. We knew none of this. That was when the local small airport was the only existing airport. We landed in Denver not having a clue what was going on. No bad weather in Denver. Pre-internet. We transferred from our jet to the small Steamboat shuttle plane uneventfully. We were oblivious to what we had in store for us. As we were landing in Steamboat it looked VERY snowy like out of classic ski posters. The pilot then told us “You guys are lucky. We’re the first plane to land after the airport being closed for 32 hours due to heavy snowfall.” We then got on our bus shuttle to drive about 3 miles into the village. The driver was jamming Pink Floyd and passed us a joint lol. Different times. Early 70’s. The Gondola was just put in a couple years before - a major innovation for CO back then. Steamboat was making a push to go from a little regional resort to a major ski destination. It was sunset and it started snowing hard again. We woke up to another 3 ft of fresh snow the next morning. So 6 ft of champagne pow had fallen in 3 days. All roads were again closed as was the airport. As such only the people already in Steamboat could ski. Zero crowds. Zero lift lines. 6 ft of bottomless pow. Unimaginably light. Ethereal. We knew from scoping things out pre-trip we wanted to get to Stormpeak and the Christmas Tree bowl area - gorgeous glade skiing not really an open bowl. Getting to the chairlift from the Gondola to Stormpeak was arduous joy as the snow was SO DEEP and the fall line not steep enough. As we were passing the crest on the chair at the top of Storm Peak 4 Steamboat ski patrol were getting first tracks each donning snorkels and whooping it up. So snorkels weren’t just a funny rumor lol. You could hear the quiet click of their skis from time to time. And see their heads and snorkels pop out of “a halo of white” with each turn. Remember skis in those days were 76mm at the waist maximum so you rode bottomless pow down deep unlike today where wide pow skis keep you near the surface similar to snowboards. The first day of skiing true bottomless champagne pow was an arduous labor of joy. We were covered in sweat even though it was 10° and the snow bone dry. Surprisingly by far the hardest task was getting up after wiping out especially if you popped a ski off. There was nothing you could push off of to get up much less pop your ski back on. Fortunately ski leashes were used back then instead of brakes as skis most certainly would have been lost. By the second day we were getting the hang of skiing this stuff and only fell a few times. By the end of the week we were as good as any pow skiers out there. One of my life’s 5 most pinnacle experiences. I became a lifetime dreamer of the “steep and deep” after that and pursued that experience for the rest of my life. Total cost of the trip? $229 lol. You used travel agents in those days and ski resorts put together package deals that the travel agents would then market. And make good commissions from. And Steamboat making a big push to become known had the best deals. $229 included the commercial jet to/from Denver. The shuttle plane to/from Steamboat. The shuttle ride to/from the resort. 6 days of lift tickets. 7 nights at a spanking new condo complex 100 yards from the gondola. With heated outdoor pool. Sauna etc… open 24 hours. A dream for four 17-year-old boys having the time of their life! That spanking new 3-floor condo and pool were torn down only a few years later as Steamboat met their goal very rapidly of becoming a ski destination and that real estate was much too valuable to be used so inefficiently. Too bad. That was the sad start of all major ski resorts starting to look alike at the base. Nothing unique anymore.

Not being familiar with diesels, you may not realise you have to pre-heat them in cold weather. You turn the ignition on and wait for the red/orange coil light to go out before you crank it. This pre heats the cylinder and aids starting. You may already know this, but thought I'd mention just in case.

Loved the video again! The production is always so good on these videos. Keep up the hard work and I am sure you will continue to grow. I can't wait to get out onto the slopes, I'll be in Jackson Hole next Tuesday up until that same Saturday! Always amazing as I live in Pennsylvania and I refuse to ski these mountains, they're pure ice, crowded, and I always get injured on them. If you have any tips for which lifts to take or where to go there I'm all ears.

Thanks matt! I’m stoked that you’re getting up to JH! And I tell people it’s not even the same sport back on the east coast!

You can really see how those rockered skis hardly give you any edge contact on No Names. I'll be surprised if your next pair of skis have so much rocker.
@LucasCatania172 жыл бұрын
its definitely more difficult to get on edge on a 116mm underfoot ski. been a challenge to use in this low snowpack year for sure!

you should try changing the settings on your gopro for a few videos so we can see the actual steepness of the runs

Sick video Lucas! Would you consider making a video on how you plan your runs when you ski new resorts? Do you use specific message boards / apps / word of mouth? I’m curious how you find these gems and I’m sure other skiers out there could benefit too!

Hey so east coast Canadian here. Last 2 winters I’ve taken a trip to Whistler and Banff Big 3 for skiing, but looking to go somewhere on the US west coast next year. Any recommendations for best resorts to visit out there for a intermediate skier on a week Vacay?

steamboat springs, telluride or park city would all be killer!!

Sweet video as usual. Glad to see the Chutes 1-3?? actually look steep on the GoPro Max. I skied them the end of Jan and they are steep... How do you compare them to other double blacks you have skied? They are steeper than the majority I have done, but they hold snow well. I totally agree that having to do the two lifts is a bummer. Steamboat has a lot of great terrain (moguls and glade runs).
@LucasCatania172 жыл бұрын
Steamboat was awesome. Definitely enjoyed the terrain there and the tree skiing was second to none! I think the chutes that I did in the beginning were right up there with some of the more challenging stuff I have skied, but the stuff out off the bowl more were a prettt average double black I felt!

If you would have gone more right in St. Pat's from the rope line on your left side you would have had a great run with pretty decent coverage. Dang it. Too bad I was recovering from a night at Winter Wondergrass or I would have shown you around.

That’s what I did for the east face run!
@robc.82692 жыл бұрын
No Names right of center has really steep trees & chutes with pretty good coverage. That's where I ski usually, it stays shady there most of the time. Thx for coming by the Boat.

How do you film your runs when we can see you from your front? Is that a drone of some sort?
@LucasCatania172 жыл бұрын
thats with the GoPro Max 360 camera and a long selfie stick. no drones allowed at resorts!
