There’s always an assumption that hanging doors is a quick/easy job but in my experience (only a DIYer) it’s a TREMENDOUS faff and it’s actually reassuring to watch these guys lugging the door up and down the stairs to make adjustments just like I do. Granted, probably not as many trips as I end up making, but I could do with the exercise anyway. Well done boys 💪🏻

It is more work than people think, especially if it is done to any level of quality craftsmanship. I work on doors nearly every day and it can take a long time to correct for all of the things that can be wrong with the jamb. The only quick doors are the ones that are going into a perfect jamb, which I don't see very often.

Wow, one of the best vids in my opinion. What a pleasure watching a real craftsmen at work. I love that router, I may have to go and buy one of these myself. Didn't know about that little piece of metal in the door keep, that's a good idea. As for foam guns, I just buy a new one every year now, given up with cleaners. Had a can come off in a customers lounge back in the 80s, it was a Hilti foam gum, I accidentally bashed the can top against the fire place oak beam, luckily I had my fleece laying on the hearth, I just lobbed the whole thing inside the fleece, rushed outside and dumped it on the drive.

I was working with a ‘chancer’ ( pretend tradesman) back in the day, he told the lady to put the can in HOT water! She did that and more! It exploded on me, hit my thigh and exploded all over the house! I ended up in ICU, lucky 🍀 I wore contact lenses or I might have been blind! Thousands and thousands of pounds of damage! Never ever team up with a lying snobby storeman folks

@@SkillBuilder no worries Rodger. I learned the hard way! Was around the late 90’s before I moved to oz. The lady was bathing the baby and must have had this can in the sink next to the bath, I remember asking with some bemusement ‘did he give you a can of expanding foam?!’ She grabbed it in a towel, handed it to me and it was the old ‘slow motion’ thing for the next few seconds, she ducked back in to attend to child… I’m thinking ‘F me this isn’t good! What to do?!’ I made it about 3-4 steps down the stairs and I felt it going, sort of like the can expanding, then the arse blew out of it I think, like a rocket into my thigh ( should have seen the bruise! And I was like a racing snake back then ! I didn’t bruise generally!) I remember sort of stumbling around for a minute confused, then fell to my knees.. Could have been so much worse, imagine it went in the bathroom and hit the baby and not me! Or at worst just all that hot glue all over the kid… :( I’d say obviously DONT heat it at all, but she had it in scalding hot water, must have been! Take care 👍🏻

Hi, im just curious. Would £60 to fit the door include wood filling & caulking to the frame, architrave and door stop fixings and damage to the decor when it's all been pryed off, packers smacked in and expanded foam everywhere. Or does the customer have to pay to get a decorator in to do? Thanks.

I either have a go myself (assuming it's a fairly minor job, sometimes it turns out ok) or think better of it and pay someone to do it properly. Knowledge, practice and the correct tools are all essential. It sounds obvious but many don't appreciate that.

Retired from paid work , for some 4 years - couldn't resist a look at this vid on sorting a door hanging problem . If I were to dish out advice (on the art of door hanging) to carpenters starting out, it would be - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE LINING . Factory produced doors come, by and large, with perfectly straight, parallel edges, the top and bottom dead square to the long edges. We all know the world of difference there can be, between fitting doors in new, well fitted linings, and fitting doors to crummy old linings

Hanging a door properly, nice and neat (especially in a crooked frame) is a real skill. I learned how to fit doors over years of trial and error and I fit them pretty much exactly how your guy does 👍🏻, I got something right. I put a pencil mark on the end of latch but basically the same method. You can now buy a latch and plate where the plate pushes up against the doorstop so no trying to work out the position of the plate. It’s also important to leave a mill or two gap around the doorstop so when the door is painted it won’t rub.

Acetone will clean expanding foam off your gun, I had a house full of frames that were out of plumb like this one, but also leaning out out, in my case I found it easier to just fit new doors into new frames, then fit frames, then just hang the doors, love what you've done with the router, I also always cut hinge rebates with a router, saves so much time and gives a much nicer seat for the hinge. Also like using 3 hinges, even on a lightweight door, hung my fire doors on 4 hinges as they were 2'9" solid doors so pretty weighty.

Roger, Dan. One of the best clips I have seen for a long time... No matter how many times you watch door hanging there is always, like now ,something to learn. P'raps Makita ought to buy up the rights to the extended base... I love that. Have often thought that a bigger base would help. I carry some of those keeps for surprising the homeowner who has suffered the ghostly door syndrome.... They think I am some sort of genius ,no mess, no fuss. Another excellent video featuring Dan’s highly skilled work. Interesting router base as well. In my older house the door stops are part of the frame, so altering them, e.g. to re-hang a door to open the other way, is a big job! (An unfair comparison, perhaps, but a bit more practice is required by Roger to get to the same level as Dan, it would appear! 😀)

See the same issue time and again, I use a Stanley knife or stripping knife to break the paint line first as it saves a lot of splitting. Whoever started the modern trend of gluing architrave on,which I'm seeing more, is a .... its impossible to get off without destroying the architrave ,liner and wall meaning more expense.

My house had cinder block walls with random thicknesses and door frames all shapes. The first one I pulled out destroyed the cinder giving nothing to screw into. I filler foamed the new frame (huge mess) and it ended up curved. Second attempt, screwed straight 4x2s to the door frames and held them in place with temporary battens. Careful filler foam did the job. 4x2 removed when the foam had cured. The door frame was straight and never came loose. 4x2 framing screwed and foamed to the ragged cinders would have been stronger but cutting cinder blocks is horribly messy.

I wish I'd known about that little metal tab to stop the door rattling before. Previous owner of my house was a right bodger and he replaced all the doors. Six out of eight rattle a bit so I'd just put a bit of narrow sticky foam on the frame which does the job but looks ... well, a bit crap but I didn't have the tools to move the stop in a tidy fashion at the time. I'm redoing all the paintwork soon so I'll rectify that as I go! Thanks Dan and Roger - at this rate I'll have a dry, rattle-free house with working taps and a level floor in no time. :)

Great video all round 👌🏼 I find with that foam gun if (when) it gets blocked up you strip it right down easily enough and then the old foam comes out a bit like cured silicone out of a nozzle. Then reassemble and run some cleaner through and all good 👍🏼

Nice job. I used a router too. Can I suggest a 23mm spade bit. It's extremely hard to find. But it works perfectly. The new locks are a little bigger from the older 7/8 , 22mm. The suppliers recommend 25mm but it's too big.

Makita do sell the plunge base and a guide it would have saved some time buying them instead of making one. Plus you can make up a hinge jig if you have a table saw which speeds the process up.

I spoke to the manufacturer's of Eclipse hinges years ago about most to the post or not with ball race hinges. They say from an engineering perspective it doesn't make any difference. So writing the the right way up if you like.

I'd argue from an engineering standpoint you definitely want the outer knuckles on the frame, always bearings always wear out, so limit movement once they do with 'most to post'. Nobody stops to read who made the hinges, 'clocking' screws on hinges and door furniture is something I do definitely spot however😉.

I always have the opposite problem, the frames being too tight. Just had to fit 2 prefinished oak veneered doors in shitty frames. First one wasn't too bad, but I had to plane about 3/8ths off the top hinge side corner to keep the margins even ish. The second one I didn't even attempt. These prefinished ones aren't supposed to be hung in old wacky frames I don't think. You've only got about 10mm on each side. The top of the frame was 29 and 3/4 and the bottom was 29 and 3/8s. I'd have had to exposed the chipboard core on both sides and left myself with bugger all to get a fixing in for the hinges. I insisted on a new lining but the builder and customer, they weren't happy, they said a good chippy can get over anything.

In one of the comments, it said that you didn't like hanging doors. Well, you made a cracking good job of it anyway! Tubular latches are a pain because of the shape. I just bought a 24mm auger bit to try.

hi guys, the other option is to add a lipping to the door and then scribe it in... also i have x2 makita 18v routers, i use a UKJ hinge jig from axminster tools which is very good. nice one rog..

I put the keep plate over the latch while the door is open to simulate the door in the closed position and then mark a line with my pencil down the keep. You now have a line on the keep to marry to the edge of the liner.

Daniel needs to get himself a trim puller and a latch mate. To line up striker plate I just rub my pencil on end of latch. The above tools along with my home made hing and striker plate jigs make my doors fast and look like a machine did them. Trim puller gets trim off with little damage and doesnt risk hitting a nail with a good chisel. Let me know if you want links to them.

Most people ain't got the money to change the frame ..... I fitted 6 doors in a row on a house in Australia ..a queen's lander. It's on piles and the whole house was tilted...every door frame had a bulk head that was about 2 inches out one side...all the doors looked a little odd as they was slopeing down...after tho they still all had a 3 ml gap round ..and looked good ...shoot them in to what ever frame you got ...sometimes it's in out in out ..plain bit hear .bit there .try not to take to much off the height..until you have seen how the bulk head runs ..charge £35.00 and on to the next ..put bits of card board behind the hinges to create a few extra ml if its needed ...with bringing the frame out like that now..you still got to cut and now scribe the architrave into the wall now....so is it really saving time...this way when you stand in the hall way you will see the frame runs out ..most fill it with caulk and all sorts then all cracks cos the doors bang .seen plenty of that on sites....most people don't want you to spend a whole day on one door

Bought a Barratt house in 1996, none of the door frames are straight or same width top to bottom. Previous house built in 1989 by Ideal, door frames near perfect.

I concur with the comments. Try hanging pre-finished doors, one mistake kaput. Great Carpentry. For a while now I have started fitting the latches while fitting the hinges on the door. It's much easier and I have a little plastic jig for the 57mm backset. And yes, folks just don't understand the work involved.

What's the model number for the makita circular saw that runs on the guide rail ?

I think it’s a DHS782. It’s 36v. The newer 40 v saws also have the channel in the base to take a guide rail.

I had hammer envy for years, finally treated myself to an Estwing, and I hate the thing! Too heavy, horrible plate on the base of the handle, I think the shaft is dangerously shaped and the handle (leather) is slippery. Pretty to look at, but an ergonomic disaster (in my opinion)

Wow, I love my estwing, after swinging it for many years. Mine has the rubber handle so no metal plate at the bottom. The shaft is good for splitting wood at times.

I prefer a straight claw hammer. But the claw on that hammer looks to be too thick for anything other than demolition work. It looks like it would make a mess of lifting floorboards without damaging them?

I have always done this and be laughed at by other carpenters, like it's the proper way to do it and when my sub-contractors don't do it on my jobs i am suprised "it is what it is" they say

These type of jobs can be unbelievabley time consuming and can be a nightmare in real older properties where the frames were fixed into propeller wedges once the architraves off you can end up with no end of potential damage. A lot of the doors customers are choosing are totally pre finished so it's more about fitting the frame or changing the frame🙈 It goes on and on. And while your up and down the stairs some scumbags have robbed your tools from where you were working. And then people wonder why they struggle to get anyone to come and fit one door .😄🤔

I have done before when I was fitting a kitchen and the units had butt hinges which looked very nice. They are more accurate, but I usually just use a 2 or 3 mm bit and slightly drill it off centre to pull the hinge tighter to the cut out.

The recess with the magnet on top of the hammer head is used to hold a nail and put it into the wood without having to hold it.

I replaced my front door hinges with decorative hinges by removing one hinge at a time. Now I have a 1/4 inch gap at the closing side near the top. For the life of me I can not picture what needs to move to straiten the door.

Were the new hinges thinner or the same thickness as the old ones? Did the old ones have some cardboard shims behind them and you didnt replace? If so, your new hinges will be deeper in the frame/door or both. Cut some cardboard shims out of cereal boxes and put them behind the hinge plates. That should move door closer to the closing jamb.

As someone with years of P&D experience let me inform you that the crescent moon hole that Dan left on the side of the door handle after making his cavity for the latch is a nightmare to get right afterwards. It's not an average caull/fill job. When a door is painted white it and the handle is shiny metal it stands out like a moon in a clear night sky. Wrapping tape around the handle to fill sand paint never works out right, inveriably some paint bleeds onto the hardware or the sand paper scratches the hardware. The only way to fix this is to remove the handle and if the carpenter has done a whole house of doors with an oversized bit well thats a bucket of handles, which inveriably will get slightly scuffed taking off/on/storing. Trying to paint doors with no handles.... Nightmare and unessacary of the job is done right the first time. I have watched Dan glid on rooftops many times and if I were on a jobsite with him I would pull him on this privately. But I am not so I need to do it here in the coments. Other than that, lovely work Dan, I'm here to learn and share so that we make things easier and more professional for each other.

Honestly get a hinge jig from robin clevet , makes hinges 10 times quicker

We have load of jigs but and it is easy to knock one up but this is for people who want to sort out a wide lining

Personally I can't see the value in Robin's hinge jig, it's something you could easily make yourself for pennies rather than the £27.50 it costs for something so rudimentary!
