I don’t get the tri tone sub ...do u build it from the chord your on or from the secondary dominant because then it become just going in from a half step above just like the first passing chord example
@SkilledMusician
@SkilledMusician 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Benny! Thanks for the question. The tri-tone substitution in this context is the Dominant 7th chord a tritone away from your current dominant chord, which is very different than the chromatic pass. For example, in a ii-V-I progression in C major, so Dminor7 - G7 - Cmajor7, if I wanted to create a tritone substitution for the G7, I would use the Db7 chord, which is a tritone (3 whole steps) away. But the key to remember is this, when I play the Db7, I can play any alteration, so that Db7 chord might actually be Db7(b9, b5, 13). But when I do the chromatic pass, my root might be Db, but my chord quality would be the exact same as my Cmaj7 chord. So for the chromatic pass, my Db chord would be Db-F-Ab-C which is a Dbmajor7 chord. But in the tritone substitution, even if I played a basic Db7 chord that would be (Db-F-Ab-B) which is not the same as the chromatic pass. However, I would almost always add alterations to it, so it might be Left Hand (Db-B) and Right Hand (D-G-Bb) which is a Db7(b9,b5,13). So although the root movement is the same, the chord quality is completely different. Hope this helps!

This brings me back to all of those times in church when I would go up to the piano player and say, "what was that you did there?"...inevitably they said, "I don't remember what you are talking about" or " I don't know man, I just did it". Years of studying would have been saved for me if I just had someone to take a moment and say, "sure man let me break these chords/movements down with you" This is substantial and points those learning in the right direction. Great stuff!

PS: 1. Good god man what piano sound is that?? Sounds like a Yamaha C7, so big and smooth. It might be the most realistic and responsive midi piano I've ever heard, holy cats! 2. Question of the day: Do you think black gospel had more influence on the development of jazz, or jazz on the development of gospel? I feel like they're almost two sides of the same coin...but I'm curious what you think.
@SkilledMusician
@SkilledMusician 6 жыл бұрын
1) You are right! The piano sound is the Yamaha C7 from Keyscapes. 2) I think Jazz, Blues, Gospel and even Country have all influenced each other. I've always considered them cousins. They have so much in common, yet they each are distinctively different and require a different approach. I will say that of all the disciplines, strictly from a musical standpoint, gospel music has produced musicians for almost every genre of music. So many of the greatest musicians, in every genre, say that their roots are gospel music. Great topic! Keep them coming!
@floofytown
@floofytown 6 жыл бұрын
1. I got Keyscape a few months ago and man, what a ridiculously useful set of samples! 2. Wow, what an astute insight...so many musicians came from gospel in one way or another. Really seems to ring true as I think about it...and speaks volumes about the power of that kind of music. I appreciate your thoughts!

Just watched your video this morning. And yes indeed you are a skilled musician! I am a pianist/ keyboardist for over 35 years and I’m familiar with these concepts but I just wanted to commend you on your very clear and straight forward approach. You also seem like a real nice person, which is most important. Very cool! And very interesting and fun. How I wish youtube and people like you were around when I was 15. I had to resort to wearing out the needle on my chick Corea,joe sample and jeff Lorber records!! ( which is not a bad thing). What program do you use to have the graphics/notes up on the screen as you play? Anyway, a real pleasure. I’m going to iTunes to look you up cause you sound like a “serious player”. Would love to hear your music. All the best to you. D Obadia.

When I learned about the tritone substitution I was taught it worked because they belong to the same diminished family. i.e., an F7 with a b9 can also be thought of as an F# Diminished Seventh with an F in the bass. The tritone substitution of B7 is the same chord with the bass note moved to B. Using this theory there are two more possible substitutions for an F7, the D7 and.... the Ab7. I never heard a good use for one of these other substitutions until hearing your "Backdoor Approach" technique! Such a great sound. The Ebm6 already wants to resolve to the root as a minor plagal cadence. Throwing in that extra Ab7 = pure bliss. So cool!

I've been looking for some kind of tutorial on exactly this for AGES man. Passing chords...and specifically, those mind-bending expanding diminished runs at the end. Diminished passing chords, like, ARE gospel music. They eluded me forever...I just didn't have a concept of them. But a few months ago I accidentally discovered the whole diminished-over-diminished thing that you describe at 7:27, where you play a diminished chord a whole-step up as extensions...and it opened a whole world up to me! Suddenly jazz dominants (and Herbie chords) made sense! As did all of gospel and R&B-style keys...and I also finally realized why the hell the diminished scales are so important: they each contain two complimentary diminished chords in one scale. Epiphanies, man! Anyway, I'm watching this is awe...you just changed my damn life with this. Ha, I'm woke to like, all this crazy dominant theory that I never understood before. I literally got goosebumps when you explained how the last "Corey Special Chords" work, how they're just II-V-II-V ad nauseam using diminished chords. I've heard those so many times in the past and kinda knew them as like, alternating diminished, but never knew why they worked. I can't believe it's so simple! Damn. This is the clearest, most useful tutorial on this style of playing that I've ever seen. You take these concepts that are potentially so complex and provide a miraculous clarity the likes of which I've never seen before. It's like, finally I get it! You're so relaxed, you're not showing off, and you're explaining everything so patiently and deliberately, with no fluff or pomp. You're not dumbing anything down in the least, but it's still super accessible. Going from the least to the most complex concepts in order like you did...it's just so perfectly paced and learnable, each one building off the last. Everything just clicks. I also find it very endearing that you end up just getting lost in a solo run at the end of your examples :) Good stuff!! I'mma pull up a nice piano library right now and learn along with you.

Hi Jean! We try to do things in many keys to encourage musicians not to get stuck in one key…. I know many musicians that can only “see” the key of C…. But the goal should be to see every key like you do “C”…. And putting everything in “C” only hurts your development…. If you need any more help, please let me know…

Awesome video Corey- just subscribed. Could you please help me with something Mr. Taylor? I'm also a music creator, but I don't know how to set up my video recording so that I can show a virtual keyboard above the actual physical keyboard I am playing? I'd like to find out which software to use, or how to set up my recording, so that when I play notes on my Alesis Keyboard, the notes light up on the virtual keyboard and the note names are displayed on the screen. I'd love it if my video could also show the chords being played, like your video does. Can you please help me? Thanks!

It can be easier to remember that the tritone sub is always a halfstep up from where it wants to resolve. And this means it's also a chromatic passing chord from above. Just that its a dominant seventh chord, not a major or minor seventh.

Thank you for the kind words! I actually think about this idea a lot, of playing everything in C. Our goal is "Helping Musicians Improve", and I definitely want musicians to be able to understand what I'm teaching. But, I also want to challenge musicians to learn different keys, as I know A LOT of musicians that can only play in C, comfortably. So hopefully I get this balancing act right!
