I hear you :) I tried Open Studio when I was just starting piano. Big mistake (from me). Their courses are not for real beginners in piano, but for beginners in jazz, and even then. I really like their content, but I would not recommended it as a sole source to begin with unless it resonates with you at your current level. Don’t get me wrong, they are very good at. And I really enjoy the content from Adam. But, I am now like a intermediate jazz piano player and when I reviewed their chord beginner course, I realize they use far advanced voicings for a beginner player. Of course you may learnt it ( I did it fora few keys) but you will not understand what is going on after some years along on the road [please forget any error, my English is a little rusty]

What a fantastic video Thembi! I’m a sax player but I’m absolutely going to use some of your ideas on the horn. I loved the voicings section too though which I was very intrigued by…I work my way through chord changes on the piano playing basic roots in the left and triads in the right and this really showed me how you can open out the harmony to make it sound so much better! Thank you!

Great advice for how to approach practicing! I want to add timing. I have the metronome play as few beats as possible without losing track of time. Say, I improvise on a jazz blues in up-tempo while the metronome only plays the first beat of every fourth measure-e.g., Straight No Chaser or Tenor Madness with the metro at 12 bpm, meaning the metro only plays beat one in every fourth measure. Chad LB explains this method in some videos, but finding them is challenging because they are folded into other topics. 😊

Wow, great stuff and presentation, Thembi. I might have told you i'm not a pianist but a saxophonist. As I live in Ireland and UK I was always told to always check out the piano. To be honest I love shell voicings and wished that someone would one day would write or arrange a couple or handful of Jazz standards using just those voicings (1-7 &1-3 with extensions 9, 11, &13) I would be the foist one to buy that book. Of cause a serious jazz piano student would learn be liberated by your wonderful Jazz piano teaching skills.

Your four octave scales are actually 16th notes, not eighths. Eighths would give you two octaves! I’ve been doing 2/3/4 octave scales for years - but only major and minor. It’s a good idea to integrate bebop scales into my routine.

Thanks for a great video. I am looking forward to your classes on OS. Just one question: at 12:41 you say that going to the dominant, your right hand stays exactly the same, and in fact it does in the video, but the sheet music shows the D going to a C# (b9 in the C7 chord). Which one is "more" correct, if there is one? Thanks again.
@thembelihledunjana2 ай бұрын
It stays the same if you aren’t adding the tension. But if you add that 9b for dominant, you’ll have to move a half step down from D to Db💯 Good to practice both ways

😃😃😃 Your Content is excellent. Great sound wins out over video quality for a win on KZbin. Your voice in this video is coloured by the sound of the room. It is suggested that we put a mic much closer to us. For instance, a singer would not work as far from the mic as you are now, and neither should you in this video. The mic can be closer and out of the shot, OR you can have a mic like a radio announcer. OR a lapel mic. It comes down to style. Whatever you choose, the mic needs to be like the song "Close To You." 😆Go out of your way to make the piano sound impeccable. You and the piano are the product of your KZbin Channel, and I suggest it needs to sound good. You can use an interface for this aspect on the piano. Why have outstanding playing like you have but have it sound like it's coming from the garage across the road. LOL 😂. Just so you know - everything I've said is a suggestion only. I am trying to help someone who is obviously good but has not had what I am saying brought to their attention. Good Luck with everything. 👏👏👏👍

I hear the piano and her voice equally perfectly. I don't understand the basis for your comment ?
@RobertHugginsDJ3 ай бұрын
@@Gerard_2024 H iGerard, You are correct, however experience by many KZbinrs is that wild sound as captured here is good enough, but close mic’s is a technique that brings intimacy. It comes down to intent, how do I want my KZbin channel to be IE;small time or big time. Either is a legitimate way of doing it but research has shown that videos with great audio hold retention even more than great visuals with average sound. I hope you find this info informative :)
