Messi, in another hand, played best in the team that supported him. However, I watched Maradona for just few years and he got declined. Nobody was comparable to him during his time, not even the Ballon d’or winners (nobody cared back then). Maradona lead a Millorca or Tenerife level team to win the UEFA Cup & 2 Serie A, captaining a ragtag Argentine time to a World Cup in the greatest individual tournament performance of all time. Messi lived of the shoulders of giants, a beneficiary of arguably the greatest mildfield ever and supported by an excellent Argentine team including Di Maria, possibly the greatest clutch player Argentina has produced in the last 20 years. Like when Sepp Blatter, the FIFA president, who should be the embodiment of objectivity, who should be the perfect picture of the awards, declared that he liked Messi better, praising Messi like a son & deriding Ronaldo for living his life unapologetically. Those awards are meaningless. Do you know how many South American Best Player awards Tevez had won? Messi won none! Aside from winning 3 World Cups which is a more objective criteria, Pele scored 77 international goals in 92 games. It took Messi almost double that appearance to beat Pele's record. Pele scored 12 goals & assisted 8 in 14 World Cup games, scoring a total of 3 goals over two finals. It took Messi a total of 26 games, almost a double of Pele's appearances, to score 13 & give 8 assists. Pls, I am very critical in my assessment of players & their greatness. Messi can't be compared to Pele, and let Messi take a Cadiz or Hull City to win the league before we compare him to Maradona. Period!

Been watching football since the 80s...stop this nonsense. Messi in Napoli in the 80s, vs those teams in Italy(best league ever) , would have achieved absolutely nothing. He never won outside of great/amazing teams. 95% of his achievements are based on the best Spanish generation ever. Add to that: 1) Maradona was getting killed by defenders that today would be ejected in 5 minutes. 2) Pitches were terrible 3) Maradona is just more talented/skilled, look at how he touches the ball without looking down.. Messi is top 5 all time probably, but don't put him next to Diego. None impacted games individually as much as he did, even on subpar teams vs superior competition (seriously, look at serie A in the 80s..) . Messi wins the longevity award (no shit, different training/nutrition/life circumstances), but if i need to win in any match, give me Maradona all day.
