If you’re an author, then you already know there is a LOT that goes into an author career besides writing. There’s book signings, sales tracking, page formatting, and you even gotta do math! Yikes. Some might tell you to just focus on the writing, and let someone else worry about the business side of a writing career. Fortunately, I’m more than happy to hit ya with the hard facts. There are several skills you may not have thought you’d need as a writer, including learning how to market as an author, understanding writing as a business, and managing social media as an author. So if you’ve been wondering how to develop your social media as an author, how to learn basic graphic design, where to learn how to market your book, or what web design skills you need as a professional writer, this video will prove to be a valuable reference. Be sure to stick around ’til the end, because you need to hear me out. This last skill is one that all careers, including writing, depend on. 🤯

Beyond what she mentioned here, you need math for good pacing and planning, for certain worldbuilding to be effective behind the scenes (calculating whether a given size population could reasonably support X size army, or certain kinds of industries, to know if they will feel reasonable in scenes), and possibly even directly in the story, in dialogue or actions. Math is ever present in day to day life, after all.

Really don't wanna be rude. But I often write stories where characters are animals, not shape-shifters or hybrids but straight up animals. I was wondering if you could do a video on how to write characters who happen to be non-human animals. It a real struggle trying to figure out how anthropomorphized your characters should be.

Can You perhaps make a video about how to write psychological trauma?
@rachele.3229
@rachele.3229 6 жыл бұрын
The Atheist Bear It's very hard unless A) You've gone through it which is bittersweet because it would be easy to write about it but the fact that you've gone through it is terrible (aka me) or B) you do a ton a research. If you want to write a good story, it takes loads of research. For this particular topic, I'd say look at people's real life stories, try reading about characters that have trauma, and other things like this. It may be a bit tedious but it's all worth it in the end.

My character goes through emotional abuse and it's very hard to convey. It's all in the research. I used to assume how people felt and just wrote but it offended a lot of people. We have to understand the issue and delve deep into the situation. Aka, if you have a character that has been raped, look up rape cases and get out if your comfort zone and if you know anyone that's had they situation, respectfully ask if they're comfortable talking to u about it. You'll probably get a no and a fave so that's why the internet exists. Characters with psychological issues often can act rash when they get their trigger sign, but don't make them sound crazy. It makes them annoying to the reader. I think thirteen reasons why does Alex's trauma very well. As authors we have to be very cautious of what we say and communicate a ton to understand tough stuff like this

If you know the names William Gaines and Ray Bradbury, I have s story about a writer protecting his work so it could reach a wider audience. William Gaines inherited a publishing company from his father. He had wanted to teach high school. His dad's company published a magazine that reprinted color comics from Sunday newspapers. Gaines found that his public, largely adolescent boys, wanted comic books. Since Superman was selling big Gaines thought his company would bring out a line of comic books in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Gaines could and did choose from among a number of classic stories in the genre that were, happily for him, in the public domain. That is, the original author's copyright had expired and stories by Poe and other writers in the canon of world literature could be essentially acquired for free. The learnng opportunity came when his company adapted Bradbury's "R is for Rocket." Life went on for Gaines and his staff until they got a letter from Bradbury asking when he should expect his royalty check. "Royalties?" Mr. Gaines wondered. A meeting was arranged where Bradbury learned whom he was dealing with: "The ususal gang of idiots" who would go on to create Mad Magazine. A crash course in publishing ensued. I think Ms. Moreci's point is that publishing is even now, a very large industry with all kinds of publishers. They range from the guys like Gaines who have no idea what they're doing, to sharks, to people who love publishing and want to make some money at it so they can go on doing it. Somehting like writers. Harlan Ellison, a recognized brillant writer, learned he could buy his books back from the publisher after a stated period of time. He could then get them published again and at at better than original rate.

I hear you. The most successful (pretty darn successful) gal in my writer's group does all this shit. I think the lowdown is try these things out and just like anything, there's gonna be a few facets of each thing (marketing, communication, etc.) that you'll end up actually liking (I'm a spreadsheet freak) and I like educating folks. There's gonna be some drudgery to even reading your novel to your fans in a 90,000 seat stadium full of people who adore you--it's just part of working.

Thankyou for your time and free information. Why do you refer to yourself as a Writer and not an Author? Is there a significant difference in that terminology?
