Hairspray is also a great option and doesn't break down into those white grungy flakes that some gels tend to. A great resource for dealing with fur is Adam Savages bear costume video(s). And obviously his Wookie too if you've got really long, fabulous fur.

That's cool, and most hair gels can be removed with soap and water to get the fur back to normal. Idk if the water will damage the pelt though

Actually as a male cosplayer and character designer, I have a lot of costumes that were built off me going into the women's section and going "that will work for him." In fact I had an entire outfit inspired by me finding a vibrant pink suede jacket-sweater-thing in an antiqueish thrift store. Women's clothes are the way to go for good costumes.

As a female-looking person, I can say it works both ways! And of course always look at curtains and blankets, you can have fabric for cheap. And accessories! (I have found the coolest bags that can work for costumes, like full leather ones for about ten bucks or less)

Alright several things: 1st and foremost, excellent video and excellent start to those characters 2. Go big or go home; i.e. get a bigger size than you need normally so you can adjust the size as it fits the character. Baggier clothes are easier to modify for a period look than tighter clothes. 3. Hot glue is your friend. In the event you dont have either the skill or resources to sew, use a small amount of hot glue under a folded layer of fabric to hold it in place. Keep in mind it may show through thinner fabrics so have a trim material in mind for that. 4. You and madi need to have a challenge build off with this concept. 30 bucks each and you can only use the stuff you get from thrifting as the bulk of the costume. One thing to know, the color on tea-dyed clothes can fade fairly quickly, you have to be careful not to wash them in our modern detergents or the color will all wash out. If you run it through the dryer on high, that will help set the color, but it will fade much faster than modern dyes. Either way, it looks awesome!

I built my whole first ren faire costume by thrifting. And even though it’s been a few years I still use some of the things I found in my full kit. It’s just genuinely such a good way to round a costume out and find more layers!

I want to cry. That is an walking wheel from the Revolutionary War Era and even if it is a reproduction it is worth around 400 dollars and much more if it is a real antique. It looks intact except that it needs a new linen thread around the wheel to the spindle.

So I worked for a costume and prop hire company until the end of last year (boo my poor health) that was essentially just a huge fitted out warehouse with about half a million individual costume and prop items for rent. People would come in for parties, film/tv, and occasionally things like cosplay and LARPing, and it was my job to piece together their costumes for them based on what we had available and honestly explaining to customers how and why I would add all these layers and accessories to make their character/costume look ~real~ really gets anyone way more excited for dressing up and also gets them to have their own creative input cause it starts sparking ideas. I agree with everything you said in this video, from the tips to shop through the whole store for items to even small weathering techniques and ways to alter without needing a lot of sewing skill just shows how accessible these things can be if you just have the imagination for it and a little time and willingness to try Edit: just realized you asked for a favorite type of character to put together and: Pirates. You can never not have fun with pirates

Ahh, that brings me back to when I started LARPing in the early 90s. I would scour thrift shops for furs and fabrics to make my outfits. With so many specialty LARP shops out there now, it's nice to remind folks that scavenging for an outfit is still a great option. Fun video!

I hit thrift stores for stuff all the time. Great place to find wool blankets to make heavy cloaks (use bed sheets to line them too). I even find pewter mugs, and similar things fairly often.

Yes! My last wonderful trip, I came home with an olive green army blanket, a sage green linen tablecloth, a piece of brown scrap leather a small natural color sheepskin used as a dog bed.. Even though my main kit has to be an absolute reenactment....I absolutely LOVE a lot of your ideas. There are a lot of people who enjoy...tasting the fantasy. And even in our organization; only an ATTEMPT is required. I've been doing it 30 years so I have all my kit; it took that long to obtain it all for one specific time and place. That said..I really, REALLY enjoyed going to thrift stores, flea markets, etc to help starving students make their ATTEMPT for less than 20 bucks and a little....rearrangement. It's a whole sport in and of itself!! I always adore the stuff you guys come up with. Actually attended a few LARPs but there seemed to be a barrier; more, I think, than the sport.....as it was all 20 something and I'm 60. They didn't give me a chance to tell them I fought; enjoy gaming, and love making other people clothing. Ah, well; I have no intention of ruining a good party! I snatched another neo Viking and we explored a huge wooden 3 masted sailing ship in our garb. Hey, somebody else doesn't have to plan all the fun. I attend fairy festivals, Renn faires, and Pirate gatherings, and I'd kinda like to take my drab, admitedly dumpy norse costume for something a little more fantastic. When in rome, as they say. I've been attending enough of them that I think I need a fantasy section in my closet, and you KNOW I'm going to start in a thrift store. AND watch all your videos!!

I recently bought a stainless steel helmet and want to get a whole “set” of armor(more likely to be chainmail, a chest plate, boots, and maybe a gauntlet made of something light like aluminum). I’m recently going into the cosplaying sphere, and have made some other costumes made of foam and want to make the rest of my knight costume, and this video is very inspirational to get motivated!! Not to mention a sewing class I just started, it is very exciting to watch these videos!! I also forget the fact that there’s an actual character that’s in play when cosplaying because I get so absorbed with just looking the part… it’s got me to the conclusion of being some kind of dwarf (cuz I’m 5ft and not growing anymore lol) and I’d love to wear a beard: never mind the heat!!

Recently I found a perfect pair of leather boots and a button up black vest with collar that comes about down to my knees for a renaissance festival costume. I was initially going to make something similar to this vest on my sewing machine, but this vest was absolutely perfect!! But now I have to either buy or make a linen shirt to go under the vest. Love this idea and do it a lot as well. Another added benefit is the materials are already aged/weathered so the costume is more realistic. New costumes have that "not rolled in mud yet" look to them. If you're playing anyone other than a noble, their attire would be aged/weathered. It's a two for one! Cheap and aged/weathered.

It’s a lot to get into in the comments so I just encourage everybody to look into them and their various controversies and come to your own conclusions! @@SkillTree Two of mine are Hobby Lobby and Chick-fil-A. I’ve heard about Salvation Army before, but not looked too far into it. Goodwill is another bad company. They treat their employees like garbage. I guess the best bet is to really look into local (and not so local) thrift and charity stores.

Also, a great way to get genuine leather/wool a little bit more ethically and affordably is to find it second hand at thrift store. I've used jackets/coats to make bracers and it worked out great.

Secondhand stores are super helpful for finding stuff. Not only are they often cheaper, but there's usually tons of quaint treasures scattered throught the "normal" attire. It can even help inspire ideas for characters, settings, crafts, etc. Even if you're looking for everyday clothes, I would highly recommend them!

The best item I found this year, I would say, was my mythril vest. Yes, its actually a fashion item. A silver thread jumper top without sleaves that's probably a lot 1980's. But because of what its made from, now its knitted...it looks fair bit like a mythril style chain vest. Cost me £6 from my local SueRyder store. Best part? When its not going over plain linen (or hiding under it, like Frodo lol) it does double duty for my Cyberpunk Solo 'Silver' (named for her love of the metal and the colour of her Kiroshi's) cause it goes back to that 80's vibe kitch thing with the tight leather pants and knee boots. (And the knee boots double up as well lmao)

sew the furs ONTO cloth; they are very fragile. Better to cover an existing garment with them, then make a garment just OF them. Also depends on how long you expect it to stay together; i.e., a one day excursion, or a costume party....or if you want to pull it out and wear it every weekend for the summer.

That jumpsuit was amazing find. Slight tweak and "boom" Ripley from the original Alien. The only thing I didn't like about Madi's first outfit was the red. The fabric was obviously some modern shiny fabric, which clashed with the more organic look of everything else. Such a cool vest though.

I just snagged the perfect pair of boots for my winter fae at Goodwill. $8. I've gotten skirts, tops, a basket, boots, shoes, and almost my entire award-winning Anne Bonney costume there (I made the coat from a coat liner, and already had the boots. Everything else - blouse, hat, trim on the hat, buttons on the coat, pants, headscarf, sashes and tankard - I got there.) Halloween is a great time to look at thrift stores. If you are looking for fur stuff for some costume, and dont mind some sewing, i would suggest going to Ikea and check if they have any nice colored fur or cow hide rugs :)

Cowhide $139 at Ikea; I've found them for $60 - 80 on craigslist, as well as quad sheepskins for sleeping furs. A little wear adds to the flavor, as long as the stains and tears aren't particularly prominent. I've bought three individual sheepskins in Goodwill in the baby section for about $5 each.

This is one of the big things that attracts me more to LARP over re-enactment or cosplay of existing IP. I can totally get the desire to chase the precision and fine details that those require but I'm cheap and lazy af and fantasy worlds allow you a lot more freedom to just play with your look and make it something that looks cool to you... And easier to do it on the cheap. Be warned, with some fabrics, if you cut off the hems, the fabric can begin to curl up and you end up in a crop top eventually. Maybe you can pull it off but I'll look like Pooh Bear. I've been toying with the idea of making myself a jacket/coat that could be used for wildly different genres. Something that I could potentially use for a medieval fantasy Rogue, a cyberpunk hacker, a wasteland wanderer or a weird West snake oil salesman. Making something that would fall into any 2 of those should be rather easy but all, will be a challenge. Probably a modular base with a few accessories that I can swap out. I'm hoping that one day I'll stumble upon a vintage piece that will be a perfect start.

This is how I made the base for my Jedi costume. I got some brown khaki outdoor pants, a tan knitted shirt, and a light tan turtleneck from Goodwill and turned the knitted shirt into a sleeveless outer tunic that I wear over the turtleneck and fold over my chest, then belt into place with an "obi" belt I made from one of the sleeves of the knitted shirt

The tea stean might not stay in after you wash it. Try onion skins just boil them you need a lot of them. Then boil the cloth in the dye. It gives a yellowish color.

Thrift stores are *GREAT* places to find stuff to make costumes with! If you're lucky, you can even find lengths of cut fabric. Old leather & fur coats are great for organic materials. I especially like old curtains--the more expensive ones were often made with brocade or jacquard fabrics & it's great for making bodices, skirts, full dresses (if you find enough fabric), doublets & other things. The jewellery section is great, too--I scavenge the beads or just use the piece as is, with a little paint or added touches.

Afternoon 😊 I just found your channel yesterday, and have been binge watching your videos. When thrifting, always look at the sewing section if they have one. I find All sorts of material. Also look at the blankets, I find some that make nice tunics. You could get some of those mesh laundry bags, paint it silver and instant chianmail. Take scraps of Leather and make boot toppers. And one more thing is I look through pattern pack find some old time clothes that would work 👍

The best trick I have found to "Rennify"a vest is to split the seams add a trim then put grommets to lace the side seams as well as the front boom a quick bodice

My first 5 years of LARP was this constantly. Still find good NPC gear! I highly suggest checking out suits and jackets for Western LARP, vests and the womens side (like you said) for fantasy, and dystopian stuff can use almost anything. Great haul on the baskets and desk thing. Also check out housewares for goblet, platters, and metal trays. Boxes and Baskets as well.

I got most of my Barbarian cosplay from thrift stores. Right now the hardest thing is making a loincloth for myself. Had to get a $50+ dollar fur shoulder wrap that ladies wear and figure out how to keep it around my waist along with my belt and weapons. The rest I just buy cheap fur coats and cut them up

You mentioned somebody making a fabulous barbarian? My barb isn't *super* fabulous, but *is* married to a spinner/weaver who makes clothes for them (as they're a goliath). I'm currently in the process of making their shawl, which is a big crocheted square big enough to be a lap blanket that ties over their shoulder!

keep an eye out for old curtains in the thrift shops a pair of curtains give enough fabric for a coat, or trousers and or jacket depending on design a single curtain should give a full length cloak.

Daughter bought a square weave top-sheet in an off pink color. (period pink, not modern vibrant pink) it became two circle skirts prior to Ren Faire season.

@@Rocketsong I have found so long as they haven't started to rot from age any fabric such as sheets blankets curtain's and tablecloths are all good sources of fabric and anything 50's-70's is generally good fabric and the colouring is good. You can always get the dye out. You can't dye lighter and bleaching the colour out will destroy the fabric.

leather purses or leather looking purses are a good find at the thrift store too; you sometimes you can deconstruct it and make something else out of it

Went to an SCA event(Society for Creative Anachronisms), purchased a faux fur throw and turned it into a full length sleeveless coat in under 10 minutes, completing my Italian Renaissance garb for the event . People at the event watched, amazed, as I did this, just by slitting arm holes and stitching shoulder seams to make an upscale Italian Renaissance coat. Cost me $10 and 10 minutes with needle and thread, and a sharp knife to slit arm holes. Oh, it was also already lined with another faux fur, too

Also, look for the shiny clothing. Many LARPS may consider it armor especially if it is textured.

I love thrifting for larp. Have you looked at Tandy's belt buckle prices? $10-12. You can thrift a great buckle on a terrible belt for like $4.00. Women's belts have great flair!

Thrift up especially for furniture: isolated it. Let it cook in the trunk of your car for a couple weeks in the summer or sit it outside because you don't want to bring any invasive critters into your home from your cool bargain. Bed bugs and cockroachs are small and their eggs are too. You never know with second hand stuff so don't risk it. I do the same for bags of clothes I get.
