Just a little warning: while copper and lead have been traditionally used for pipes and even silver has been used to store liquids, they are all heavy metals and not chemically innert. Especially acidic liquids will dissolve metal ions and we know from home brewing that copper can stain the product and alter the taste. If you do it regularly, it can even impact your health. Else, a beautiful gadget.
@isaacschmitt48032 жыл бұрын
Very true. This has come into light lately with Moscow Mules and their copper mugs, though the main point of concern with that is the amount of *time* the acid is in contact with the copper. For a quick coffee brew, it might be fine, though if/when I make my own, I'm definitely going with a different pipe material like aluminum or something.

A little trick I learnt as a technician, bung up one end of your pipe with a bung then fill the pipe with fine sand tapping the sand down to get it tightly packed then when you have only enough room to jam in a bung in the other end you can now gentle bend the pipe to suit your needs. The second things are to do with the finish on your wooden box. A friend of mine renovates furniture, as you can imagine when the woodworm has been through your chair for lunch some of the wood ends up unusable, so of course you make a replacement part. Apparently the thing a lot of people don't realise is that without the worm holes in the wood the new part won't match. The solution is to get a disk of wood about the size of a one cent piece and put seven panel pins, randomly, all the way through so that you have a little disk to tap randomly over the surface of the wood to give the effect of woodworm. the other thing you can do to age your wood is to wax your wood, don't be mean with the wax, and instead of polishing it back with a cloth polish it back with fine wire wool. This will give that lovely effect you get on aged wood where the grain has swollen and been naturally rubbed back down and you get that slight rounding to the wood grain edges.
@SkillTree2 жыл бұрын
I LOVE these tipsa especially that aging tip with the wax. Such a great idea! Thanks!

I’m trying to think of a good solution to help prevent it from getting knocked over but still being compact. If people have suggestions or things that they’ve done, please let me know! And maybe it would be a good idea to pack a thin heat resistant glove that you can roll up and store somewhere (honestly, those regular cheap MaxiFlex work gloves that come in a big pack have worked great for me in the past when handling hot things for short periods of time!) that way you can handle some of the hot stuff if needed. ANOTHER AMAZING HIT!!! I absolutely love your channel!!! Slight modification to your burner. I use alcohol stoves when I go backpacking. I use a “priming tray” for it. It’s a small tray that goes under the stove, has additional alcohol on it and is lit and it’s purpose is to heat up the alcohol in the stove from the outside and bottom of the stove. Because heat rises it warms the alcohol faster than the heat of the flame on the fumes attempting to warm the can from the top and the heat moving through the metal going down to the liquid. Make sense? Essentially just take and cut out another bottom of a coke can like you did for the cap to cover the alcohol. And put a dent or two in it to create a raised surface for the stove to make contact with but still allows air flow between the priming tray and stove. Pour on a little alcohol and in like 30sec or so the stove should be heated up enough that when you cap the center it should plume out immediately. Also… I would assume this goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway… you want both the priming tray and stove lit when doing this for best results.

It is another fun, and easy project to do, and the end result will last for years.

This is absolutely awesome, and came together great. The only downside is how little coffee you can make at a time. As an avid coffee drinker, that drop of coffee isn’t nearly enough. If you want to make a lot of coffee, but don’t want to break character. I'd recommend old cowboy coffee pots. Like, actual pots made just for brewing coffee. You add water, let it heat, add the grounds, and then let it boil and brew. Once it's brewed enough, you add cold water(making sure to get the grounds on the edges) to make the coffee grounds settle to the bottom. Now you have coffee for the whole party!

This video, another one of a historian talking about spices used in medieval kitchen and a lazy afternoon at the mall gave me the inspiration for a spice chest for LARPs or renaissance festivals. It's basically a similar but smaller box that holds six vials with salt, ground spices and dried herbs and a tube with vanilla beans in its lid, mortar and pestle on the right and small boxes with whole peppercorns, nutmegs (and a small enough grater that I still have to find 😅), cinnamon sticks, cloves and so on stacked over another on the left side of the bottom. Everything that you need to round of a tasty meal and some mulled wine. And a test tube with instant coffee powder because I'm too lazy and clumsy in the morning to operate such a genius apparatus. 😅
