Just as a heads up! There is a whole slew of laws against privately brewing spirits in the US. Lots of hoops to jump through to do it legally. Aging it and imparting flavor, though, is perfectly legal. In fact, most brands buy the raw spirit from a distillery and put it through their own process to age and give it their own flavor profile. Just wanted to make that one clear lol.

US federal laws allow for 100 gallons of beer and wine in a household consisting of 1 adult over the age of 21 or 200 gallons for 2 or more adults over the age of 21 per year. Home distilling alcohol for drinking is illegal. Homemade alcohol can not be sold and can only be removed from your residence for the purposes of brewing competitions. Or at least that was the laws last time I looked them up. Local laws may vary, so double check before brewing.

A crazy/ambitious thought comes to mind: combining the "pack of the wanderer" with I believe it was called "the staff of the wanderer," the one that broke into three sections to form a small stool. The idea here is to build a frame/harness that will fit not only the tavern trunk ("Trunkern?" "Tavunk?" Nah, too silly) but any other accoutrements you may want to add (extra pouches for more games, more flasks, more bottles, maybe a little candle/mini fire pit for light, or maybe make it large enough to also carry the Alchemist Brewery box), while also being able to rearrange the components of the pack into some kind of small chair to sit on, or perhaps a short table upon which to set up the "bar in a box." The other thought would be just a harness of some sort made out of leather straps that the box would nestle into and all the anchoring points and weight-bearing connections would be incorporated into the harness so there's no stress on the box itself. As for the way the flask turned out, you could look at it as "water stains" or you can look at it as "building the lore." Every "mistake" or "blemish" when building things like this create opportunities to craft a backstory - a history of where this item has gone and what events it may have been through. And if you end up using this thing while camping/larping those blemishes really help make it look "lived in" - like it has seen actual use - rather than it looking "brand new/store bought."

One of the best tools I've found for inside measurements is a carpenter's rule with a slide. They run between 15 and 20 buck and they are great for getting any sort of inside or depth measurement. If you want to add a handle or strap, I would consider doing it on the side, rather than the top, and add a backing plate that you can screw/bolt all the way through the box side. The box itself should be more than strong enough to support that, particularly with all the added leather to the outside and corner braces on the inside. You should also try to see if you can add the coffee station you made to the top of the pack, so you are covered for evening and morning beverages. Have you considered burning a design into the leather? It seems like you have a lot of real estate for a fun design for Maddie to go ham on.

Two small notes about the 'bar top' ; I would put something on the underside just to use up the leftover storage space. And 2, I might add a finger hole not only to ease deployment, but to allow you to set your drinking horn in it. Otherwise, a fantastic build! For carrying, I like the idea of a dedicated version of the frame, and maybe making the barrel fixed in place or better still, a barrel facade over a pressurized growler to allow for ale; because every tavern has good ale!

Two thoughts: - For carrying it, I would recommend continuing to pair it with the Pack o' the Travelling Wanderer. That shelf at the bottom combined with a string connection system will allow you to carry it and some other gear. Look up the Diamond Hitch as a great and simple way to attach gear to those sorts of pack frames. - For handles, get some thick (3/4" - 1"), twisted (3 or 4-strand), natural fiber rope. Drill two holes into the box at the points where you would want your handles to connect. If the holes are the same thickness of the rope, you can thread the ends of the rope through the holes, tying knots on the inside to keep them from pulling back out. Just look up different stopper knots- a Simple Overhand or an Ashley's Stopper knot should work, or look up the Manrope Knot if you wanna go super epic!

I do think it looks so good on the wanderer frame! The only thing I would do different is the table. I would make a four legged table. That way it can be moved away from the case. Like on the floor of a tent or something like that. Awesome build!!

I would use the whole thing as the table. Turn the shelf into a dartboard on an easel stand/hanging rope to spike into a tree/hang off a branch, and use the flat of the case as the bar.
@kameljoe21
@kameljoe21 Жыл бұрын
@@littlekong7685 The board can be checkers on one side and a cork on the other side. Using wooden dowels that likely would fit in the case quite well some where. You could make the dowel tapered and then there is 4 holes in which they sit in. You could drill holes in the side to insert some small sticks to hold the legs on. Not making it strong. Just to keep it from coming out when setting it up. Then add in a candle and some matches ( led candle stick to set on the top. Nevermind that. You only need 2 legs. the table does not have to be super thick. It can be thing boards. You could then have 2 pieces that are stitched glued or what ever to set on top of the case and then 2 legs and a cross board. The legs are tapered dowels with the top thicker part thinned down so you set the legs in to a cross board then set the table top on it. This prevents the middle of the folding table from closing up. so if you were looking at it you would see the box fully open then the table and 2 guys sitting on stumps/rocks. I could make tiny stools too... the wood table top is leather bound on the back side and the thin wood panels is rough with a checkers/chess board along with some instructions or other dice games or even a cribbage board or some sort of thing. I was thinkinking it needs something else like remember that lantern they made. If the legs had another set that either could be press fitted. I was just thinking the legs are going to have to be 4 pieces anyways as the table can not be higher than what can fit in the box. Either way a way to attch the legs to make them taller and make a hook thing to hang the lantern or something. One way would be pool stick fixing. yet this might be too modern. Billiard Cues Tips Replacement pack of 10 for 7 bucks. You could glue some 1/2 dowels to these somehow. the whit part would slip over the wood. The tip you would have to remove the felt thing and then glue the dowel to it. If not just one joint is around 10 dollars.

If you use your backpack frame and the keg get some hooks to add to the backpack frame and hang a couple of beer mugs from them so that you can use the keg. (You could also use the lid of the keg (after you emptied it ofcourse) as a dart/throwing knife board.

My God this is a work of art. Like full on "Shut up and take my money" level. You could wood burn a checker board into the bar top to have one more game to take with you as well. As for a handle you could probably get away with making a handle strap that runs underneath your closure straps that you tacked on. Or for better weight distribution make two hand straps attach them to your closure belts, then you could use some leather cordage to wrap the two handles together and it shouldn't even interfere with your opening of the case.

I think that the frame from the pack of the wanderer is perfect! Maybe put some removable leather straps for when its in "tavern mode" so the ropes don't do too much damage to the leather finish. I'd also recommend a SkillTree logo tooled onto leather and attached to the outermost side. Nothing wrong with a lil branding and decoration. If you want to get really fancy, you could make the logo from metal~

Honestly, before you said it, my suggestion was going to be something like the frame that you used here, but more in the style of the tavern trunk, obviously. If it had some side boards, you could even make some holsters for more bottles, since two bottles of liqour don't make a tavern, IMO. The barrel with some ale or other chugging-worthy alcohol does help a bit. You could add some bottles of mixer, like some juice or seltzer to the frame. Or even better, you could add some reusable self-cooling ice packs to chill your drinks, for lack of easily portable ice cubes. That'll be a great boon when your patrons become tired of room-temperature whiskey. Also, while it may be too late now, I think there's enough room around the flask to fit some strapped-in mini bottles, maybe four or so, just in case you want a shot of jaegermeister, or somesuch. Either way, awesome project.

The military chaplains and priests who visit shut ins still use miniature "traveling communion sets" that are in tiny cases no larger than a shoebox. The chalice is about the size of a large shot glass, there's a nod at a vestment stole that is basically a wide ribbon. I wonder if you could use a metal plate on the inside to rivet through the board to affix a handle. The plate should help distribute the weight and prevent the handle from tearing off. Plus some more antiqued brass would fit the style of an old-timey steamer trunk imo and could even be etched with a tavern name or something, That being said a removeable cradle would be cool if it could attach to the pack frame and act as a means to carry it around by hand. Regardless I think integration with the pack frame is a fantastic idea.

Hey Cl3ver, how about leather boots as new project? Not customizing a regular pair, but making one from scratch. I know, making your first pair isn't easy even for experienced leathercrafters (such as yourself), but it will be a new horizon to conquer for you, and a lot of fun for us. Put a small handle on each side to help pull it apart to open it and I agree with the person add it to the straps I'd probably add back straps to it maybe use thicker straps switch those out for thicker straps. You could also have a reinforcing bar of metal Underneath just a small piece of metal will give you a lot of reinforcement for very little and with a thicker, piece of leather it would hide the metal

The tavern wench could be a wrap dress that you can use for a bag on the side. You can put a blonde wig in it maybe some other things are like a little cloth to cover your bar like table and put little buttons to attach it to the corners and you have more space for like tablecloth and the rare soft things. There's a little bit space in the corners of top that you could put in mixers in little bottles fitters stuff like that

Maybe some kind of adjustable leather harness could work for holding it? Like, with vertical and horizontal straps (with buckles for being able to keep it tight and snug). And then maybe a leather strap at the side of the box from which it opens for carrying it around? Or two more adjustable straps for carrying it like a backpack. So many ideas.

Now that is certainly a kit that will make you quite popular! I like the idea of a dedicated frame for it, but perhaps its time to go Big! Be Extra! Perhaps the world needs a travelling character with not just one kit, however useful it may be. Imagine a wheeled cart, whether two or four wheels depends on how clever you can be. ;) But said cart would carry the Kitchen and Cooler, the Folding Vanity and Sink, the Alchemy/Coffee kit, the Bar kit, and so on, until the cart has a complete encampment. Not sure it could carry the bed and tent, but who knows? The cart could come apart and turn into tables for the various kits, giving work spaces. You pull up with your cart, sort of like Gandalf (maybe without ponies to pull it, but hey), and you can set your entire camp up from one cart. The Ultimate Kit!

i think the frame pack is the best way, shows off the piece well, is removable, can carry other things on it, like a net bag of citrus fruits, and some shaker tins. In my head I see it being a J shape, having a perfectly fit notch in the bottom, or just a lip at the front, just looks like they go together better than a flat bottom, cause they were meant for each other, the barrel is a nice touch too. Maybe some detail on the front of the box, something like "The Travelling Tavern of Tillian Twicerich", kinda like how you did the map of middle earth.

This handle idea may have been recommended already, but I don't know how to search for this specific idea, so here it is: Attach the handle to the straps so that, when they are buckled up, the handle is in place and ready to use. This should put most of the weight on those straps instead of any spot on the wooden structure. This does put everything on its side, though, so if that isn't ideal, then I do really like the backpack idea with the keg for good measure that you came up with!

I've thought about this and I think a shoulder sling makes the most sense both practically and stylistically. As a Portable Tavern Owner it probably wouldn't be your full time profession. Probably a gambler or an alcoholic who knows how to scratch an itch. I would generally build it along the lines of the Snake-oil Salesmen scene in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. He's a bit of a showman, huckster and magic user, but ultimately he's a conman. His setup is easy to unfurl and just as quick to dissemble, when it works right. So, a shoulder sling for carrying. A briefcase handle for setting up, and potentially tri-pod legs for display. If you want to go for Maximum Effort. But if you do, a Roulette Wheel should be within. Best of luck sir, your projects never cease to amaze me when you're breathless at the end like this one.

This is so rad. If you buy these premade from Design Toscano or wherever they cost as much as a good, functional sword and are of dubious quality. 2 ideas, though: A bottle of wood hardener will make this pine box more dent resistant. The stuff is cheap. And if you reinforce the top and bottom with pieces of furniture grade plywood you'll be able to drill through it and use bolts and washers to hold on a handle and/or feet. But that steampunky ALICE-style pack frame was perfect looking and the wooden keg was a nice touch, too.

Also for ANY larp, ALWAYS include hidden spaces so you can hide contraband ;) I also added some of those led fake candles with a microswitch and a battery compartment for when you fold out the little shelf the candles "magically" light up! On the top part of the box we had a bottle with water to rinse the cups when traveling and some games. Plus a little cushion holding a tinwhistle for when we had to kill some time at a campfire. Everybody loved that thing and the roles that came with it!

I think the cradle/Backpack of the Wanderer idea is so appropriate. But to take it a step further would be to make said cradle a platform that can support the Traveling Tavern if you don't have another table or platform to put it on. And if that cradle/platform had height adjustable/extendable legs? Come on, how cool would that be?! Just a thought...

Please make 110% sure you live somewhere it is legal to distill spirits for personal use (selling is another matter entirely). I cannot speak for every state (I have been told it is a federal offense everywhere in the US) but I know here in the southeastern US (moonshine country) making mash and having a still gets you in serious trouble. There is no "personal use" in regards to distilling liquor. You can make a certain amount of beer or wine (pretty much making a mash is cool) but have a still to fire up and I hope you look good in handcuffs. Add mash to the still and run it can lead to even more "vacation" time.

Best I can think of for carryage (yeah, it's probably not a word. What am I, a... word guy?) I was thinking an old school book strap that loops back on itself to form a handle. Dont know how well it would work, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

To carry this excellent project I would suggest the frame with a shelf at the bottom to support the weight. Furthermore taverns usually have a name, and this name is displayed out the front on a hanging board. Due to poor literary levels the name would be a logo. So the backpack frame could have an extention pole with a flag/banner hanging proudly.

Your corkscrew experience is the exact opposite of mine. I've carried a Victorinox Waiter (which has a corkscrew) almost every day for 15 years and have needed the corkscrew maybe 3 times. I guess I need to drink wine away from home more often?

Make a platform with a skirt that wraps around the tavern. Then have folding/collapsing legs inside it. When opening the bar, platform becomes a table with the legs extended. Add a couple of wanderer staff/stools to the side and boom you have a bar with some creature comforts.

To include the Tavern Wench, you could Découpage a picture of a Tavern Wench on top of the pull out "bar top." Adds to the aesthetic and teaches another skill. Win, Win. Maybe someone can draw one holding up a tray with a frothy beer and a couple of bottles of alcohol and shot glasses and her other hand on her hip pose like she is moving through a crowd? Unfortunately I cannot draw to save anyone's life, but I have ideas. lol

What was the purpose of using the original box? Seems that it's construction limited half of what you wanted to do. And then you completely wrapped it anyway. So you can't see the wood.

What about a leather harness with shoulder strap to carry it. Alternately, you could build a traveling trunk and 'hide' this bar in the bottom of it. Your gambler could be "smuggling" in some fun and a place to gamble.

One thing I would do if I made this, would be to add some designs on the leather behind the objects so if everything got cleared out you could see like a map of the area or trade route you walk.

So, for distilling your own whisky, you throw out the 'heads' because it contains methanol, which is ethanol's more insidious cousin. Drinking a bit won't kill you, but it will give you the mother of all hangovers and taste awful. If you drink an excess of it, it will ruin your liver in record time, but so will ethanol. Finally, it's dissolved lead in ethanol (alcohol) that will cause you to go blind / kill you slowly / make you go mad (hatters used to use a lot of lead which led to the phrase, 'mad as a hatter'). Back in the day, most copper pipe was soldered with lead solder, which will dissolve into hot ethanol during distillation. So, as long as you use a food safe solder, like a silver based solder which is what most solder outside of china consists of, then you should be safe.

An easy thing would be to make a leather handle that has a rigid or semi rigid core and has two loops to attach to the straps that hold the box closed. Added bonus you can add further bits and bobs to the handle like the pencil sharpener or “special” dice for when the house starts losing. Also if anyone is looking at this but finds space at a premium, the Bridge size playing cards are a bit smaller than a poker size deck. Another game that could be added is a checker board, and I’ll borrow from a game set I have. During WWII companies made games for soldiers to play in the field with no table, it was a stack of cardboard with a fabric strip attached that held a little bag of wooden pegs, there were 4 colors and all the pegs were the same length, I think 13 pieces each color. The pegs went into the holes cut into the cardboard stack and there were two game boards, one on each side. It was called “The Jeep Board” and would be perfect for this. I’d make one further addition, you can make two more sets of pegs in 2 colors with different sizes and notches, boom chess set. You could also use the pegs for a cribbage board

Cool project! I think you are a bit too far into it to add a carry method, but here's some ideas. Hand bag. Add a large loop of leather around the box, basically put the box on the loop and fold the loop, this should give you handles if you cut a bug enough piece if leather. Make a harness. So kinda like how some christmas pressents are wraped you distribute the weight on the corners with pieces of leather that goes diagonal, on the back you connect those pieces to a large piece of leather that you then can put some straps on to make it a backpack. (Sorry if this one is confusing) Shoulder strap. Just make a leather pouch for it and attach a shoulder strap. I hope that this is somewhat helpful. Oh and also, just because the box is made out of pine remember that the leather cover helps keeping it together, so even though it would suck if it got damaged, the leather will prevent it from dropping its content.
@dreanux
@dreanux Жыл бұрын
You could make a clip-on handle on the straps you already have there. Since they go around the trunk, it will redistribute the weight well and you can always remove the handle when you don't need it. You will then carry it horizontally as a briefcase or a normal luggage.

Expand the frame of the Wanderer. So that you can make it a full tent and bar. Much as you would expect for a wandering merchant. The frame becoming wider across your shoulders and out from your back would not change the poles you were using for the tent. This would allow you to make a small fold out table that would be your back support. Have the tent behind it. Bar below resting on the ledge. And still allow you to attach a small chair or 2 like from the Staff to either side. Because what kind of bar expects its patrons to sit on the ground and to dirty your dice and cards. Saying all of this your could even redo your game pouch to be the table top.

make an adjustable strap cradle for the box. it would be two lateral, two longitudinal and then some way to attach the shoulder straps, should look good and be rather secure

I was just going to suggest adding belts around the box with an extra 30-40 inches to make shoulder straps after it’s cinched down but there’s quite a few other suggestions from other commenters that would probably work as well if not better
