This feels like a classic Skill Up review... the musical cues, the long pauses for quiet time, his focused, highly descriptive tone. While I love the more humorous and upbeat feel of his new reviews, and their shorter lengths do a better job of actually serving as consumer-friendly reviews... I like this too

I absolutely agree. I still remember how amazing it was the first time I watched his NieR Automata review and all the care it must have gone through to make it possible, or how excited I was with the Monster Hunter World review. And although I don't dislike the more recent reviews, I really wish the style of reviews from the past were more frequent. Still, it's good to know that at least, every now and then, it's possible to see them come back, even if only for a brief moment.

For those wondering, the art style and designs are heavily inspired by the works of Jean Giraud aka Moebius, particularly his anthology comic Arzach. Also for the anime fans out there you might consider checking out a one-off OVA called Dragon's Heaven that also borrows many aesthetics from Moebius.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun just did a comprehensive review of this game. They mention a lot of issues too: "None of the irritating things are huge, and in a few patches time Sable will probably be in much better shape. But right now, there are a lot of small irritants to get under your skin all at once. I simultaneously loved the beauty and strangeness of Sable's world, but was tormented by having to exist in it." -Alice Bell What I find peculiar is that Ralph is usually really thorough on his reviews, yet didn't mention any issues at all. Even on games he recommends, he'll mention issues with the game. I've looked at some other reviews, and they mention similar issues too. Did Ralph get lucky? It's possible, but I doubt it. I honestly wonder is Ralph didn't get a little bias in this review, rose tinted glasses maybe. It's an issue with most reviewers, staying objective can be difficult. Especially when reviewing media that can leave a strong personal, and subjective impression on you. Ralph is one of the few game reviewers I actually trust to give his honest, objective impressions of games, but no ones perfect. This may be one of those times where he experienced issues, but didn't notice these issues because he was so enamoured with the game. Just speculation, of course.
@TheHeadincharge

@@TheHeadincharge So a game doesn't load, is that subjective? Being soft or hard locked by no fault of your own, is that subjective? Frame or audio drops, is that subjective? Accurate or inaccurate hit boxes, is that subjective? A weapon being hit scan or projectile, is that subjective? Every form of media can be assessed objectively. Good and bad, and liked and disliked are mutually exclusive. You can like something that's objectively bad, and hate something that's objectively good.

@@ReaLMoisan it’s possible that Skillup was trying to make a point here with a bit of a ‘less is more’ approach. Paying respect to what he perceives as an amazing game built on a simple premise and constructing his review in the same way as a kind of homage. Just my take on it. I think we’ve all seen enough of his work to know he doesn’t just commentate about things without thought or reason.

Warning: Severe technical issues Thankfully it was free on GamePass. Concept and art direction are nice but there are gameplay issues. 1. Many times the bike will not recall to your location. I had to stop playing entirely because not only would it not return but it could not be located using compass and map. It constantly moved and flipped sides on the compass but it was not there. Exiting and re-entering the game didn’t resolve it. Basically left me stranded in the desert with no ride. Unable to play further. 2. For a low res game it has a very jerky jerky animation. It’s livable but unexplainable. 3. The camera is atrocious. This game is up my alley and I was enjoying it in spite of the issues until it stranded me without a bike and no recourse. It’s unfinished or poorly tested.

Thriving, but uncontrollable, and inevitably filled with edgelords desperately trying to stand out from the huge crowd by being as venomous and contrarian as possible. You have no limits, but there's a less than 1% chance that anything you post will ever be read by anyone. 2. The "possibly-ok police state" - Reasonably sized group where productive discussion and interaction can happen. Only made possible by extremely trigger happy moderators who are prone to power-trip from time-to-time. Workable, but you'd better learn the social hierarchy before you post. 3. Ryzen 5 3600,16gb ddr4, 2080super, and I'm playing on low and I get 25 fps in the "complex" parts of the map, maybe 45 in the regular desert. on top of that is constant hitching and stuttering. also don't use a keyboard and mouse because it is borderline unusable. also this game is 90% just walking or riding your bike and then reading so much boring text you actually fall asleep. this game is imo a full year of just performance and bug fixing to be playable. this game is not ready and I don't think this review is genuine at all. I have played like 5 hours so far I think and I don't know if I can keep playing.

Now that you made this video, you should try actually playing the damn game next. It was gorgeous and the music was great.... in the few moments everything wasn't bugging out of control. Towards the end of the game, I would often hear the various instruments in the soundtrack go out of sync with each other. One NPC I needed to complete a quest just turned invisible for a few days; my compass led me to his usual location but he wasn't visible and could not be interacted with. My character fully locked up about ten times in my playthrough, requiring a restart each time, but that's nothing compared to the infinite number of tiny cumulative glitches that often turned the simplest movement task into a Sisyphean nightmare of failed attempts. If I hadn't spent years of my life meditating I probably would have destroyed my computer in frustration. I'm not sure why I finished the game, tbh; masochism is the most likely answer. Well, that and videos like this that pretend the game isn't an absolute trainwreck of unrealized potential.

Finally got a chance to play this. This plays REALLY well.. some really really well done open world design ideas. Also love how much the game trusts the player but man, the game looks like ass. Fully disagree with the review here. When visuals are bad, it is bad. Also people who rave about the music, don't bother to mention how bad the sound FX is. Overall inconsistent package that would have been an instant classic if it had a larger team working on it. At this stage, it is very hard to recommend this to "average" game player

This is the only time I’ve been massively disappointed with a Skill Up review. He made it sound amazing but I held off at launch due to people mentioning poor optimisation and bugs. It just came out on PS5 so I thought they would finally be fixed, and the game runs atrociously, which is a shame because it seems like a fantastic relaxing game but bad performance really takes you out of the relaxing immersive feel. Ralph didn’t seem to touch on just how badly the game runs in most areas.. (I’m talking 15-20fps on PS5)

This. Ralph is my go-to source for reviews and I'm astounded he didn't touch on the technical state of this game. Even today, the stuttering and poor frame rate in locations like Eccria, the Whale, the petrified forest or any of the stations are immersion-shatteringly bad. And that doesn't even mention the audio or lighting glitches or jarring pop-in. Seems like they've abandoned the game and have no intention of addressing any of these things. It's a shame, because beneath all of those technical issues is the remarkable experience that Ralph described. But my opinion of this game will definitely come with an asterisk and I have a hard time recommending anyone spend money on it. If you got it for free through epic, or through humble recently, by all means check it out. But at $25? No way.

On the X1S it certainly looked good, and that art style still shines through but it wasn't quite as crisp as your video looks. That and there are some audio issues and framerate drops (sometimes pretty significant) when you get near or in bigger structures. I get the impression, despite the art style's simplistic look, that this game is a PC and X/S optimized experience. Maybe I'm just unlucky though. Fantastic zen game though. Definitely not willing to give up on it yet. EDIT: I'm giving up on it until I get a Series X. There's so much potential with this game and I don't want to continue to ruin the experience with choppy to full on flip book speed framerate issues.

I gotta say i'm a little dissapointed with this review. He talks about some things that are spectacular in this game like the music, atmosphere and art direction but doesn't go in-depth at all on what the gameplay is like, how clunky it is, how unpolished the animations and transitions of are, how technically lacking it is... amongst many other problems. 1. The optimisation is the worst i've seen before, no exaggeration. The game ONLY ran at more than 25 fps on my gig at 480p resolution, i am on a low spec PC but several WAY better looking games run pretty well on my pc (i can run Genshin and Batman Arkham City on max settings for example) even some with bad optimisations . Only options are resolution and max fps cap. 2. Very VERY clunky and bad implemented animations. Every animation starts out of nowhere and ends abrutly, no transitions and many times just looks really clunky, not a problem of the 12 fps style (i kinda like it) but of the their quality in itself. 3. Gameplay is clunky as fuck, even for a indie low-budget game. Climbing always feels weird, jumping sometimes grabs the wall, sometimes doesn't, running works when it wants, amongst several other problems, especially bad when hovering. 4. Night looks like grey shit. No excuses, it's not to make day better it's just bad-looking, like many lights/bloom effects in the game. 5. Game desing is exploration for the sake of exploration and it got boring pretty quick since there is no reward and the game has reward systems and quest-lines so it just feels like a waste of time. A game that has the same design philosofy but works for example is NaissanceE, free and fantastic in every corner. I like these kinda games but Sable just feels like it wanted to have more but it can't so it just kinda pretends it has, like putting a useless collectible here and there for no reason and with no thought to why should it be there in the first place. Btw hey need to fix how if you have a second quest-line open you have to listen to the same dialogue about it from EVERY npc in the world before they talk their normal dialogue EVERY time and you can't skip dialogue because that would take time and effort to program so fuck you. 6. Bugs and Glitches. Several of them. Get stuck on walls, geometry, ground, etc. Menu bugging out, the resolution changes everytime you move to another option without ever confirming, bike not coming back, character doing stuff out of nowhere like jumping from a wall... Overall the game has potential, especially n the artistic department, AMAZING Soundtrack, Great visual style and overall nice worldbuilding and atmosphere, but as a game it is still lacking a lot. 7/10 for the art/gameplay and 10/10 OST.
