Ever seen lead skim on the water? Maybe you've seen it a couple times, but it was pretty crazy for me to see it happen so many times in one day. What sort of circumstances cause this?

It may also be that the very small particles that are flying off are 1) light enough where they are more prone to be more easily deflected by air and water and 2) that the relative angle of impact from gun to water is steeper than the secondary angle of impact that occurs as a result of leaving the body of the animal.

I used to deer hunt with a 50 caliber muzzle loader. At the end of the day we would discharge the rifle to unload it. One day I was hunting near a small lake and as the light failed I still hunted back to the truck. As the road overlooked the lake I just fired the rifle into the water. The water was about 200 yrds below me at an angle of around 30 degrees. The round hit the water and continued to skip down the entire length of the lake (well over 800 yds) and I clearly heard it smack into the mud at the end of the lake. Surface tension of water is amazing. I never used the lake as a discharge point again. It was really scary!

As an NRA and 3 state (Connecticut, Vermont, and Florida) certified Hunting Safety instructor and Firearms Instructor, one of the first things I caution my students against is shooting at the surface of the water. The reason is the utter unpredictability of the projectile after it contacts the water. That said, this was fascinating. Great shooting and great photography. It also looked like the nearest structure was well out of range. Thanks for making and sharing the video.

I have experienced this effect years ago when hunting jack rabbit in NE Montana. I personally feel that the projectile is tumbling after it connects with the water due to its deformation from impact on the target. Between the barrel spin, velocity, and odd shape I believe it acts like an over spun top skittering across a table. Just my observations after lots of bunny hunting. Cheers!!!

When I was in the service I used to marvel at how far a .50 Cal bullet or a 3" cannon round would skip. The plume of water it sent up was well over 50 feet and they literally skipped for miles. The cannon rounds would skip until you couldn't see them anymore.

Hi Matt fascinating video and i suspect your theory is correct also after impact the trajectory probably flattens out as well so won't dig in as much. Most of all its a very good cautionary tale for those experimenting with slugs in places where wide open space is limited. Always know where it might go after, its still carrying a lot of energy!

I watched a rock skipping video recently and one of the most important factors is the angle the object hits the water at its given speed. So what I hypothesis is that 2 things are taking place 1st of which is a change in speed and 2nd the angle is also becoming steeper it would be interesting to to see what the optimal angle is for 1000fps and other speeds respectively

It seems to me that the deformity of the slug and a velocity drop imparted by the goose start the slug tumbling and slow it enough for both the air and water to effect its flight without further deformation to the slug. Irregular shapes move irregularly through fluids like air and water. Fascinating phenomenon.

I'm over in the uk, so I'm on a sub 12 setup, i recently had a grey squirrel not that lomg back at maybe 25yds, perfect eye through eye. The pellet ricocheted with a horrendous amount of force off the branch behind, it was like nothing was even between it. Could it be possible the slug didn't have that cushion and did actually fragment like hitting water? The arc in the exit trajectory is probably something yo do with the forward momentum the slug still has, as well as a spin that probably opposes the direction it was sent off at. Thinking of it a bit like optical fibre, when it hits a change of density, it slows down and is deflected at the angle it entered at. The closer the entry angle is to 0 degrees from the line you shot, the more influence the impact on the water will have on the forward (shot) force of the slug. The closer the impact is to 90 degrees (sideways) the more influence the spin/deflection force will be affected. Which would explain why the angles of each impact increase as the slug travels further from the 0 degree line. Just a big battle of the forces!

I wonder if the slower velocity of the projectile after exiting the goose has anything to do with it? As in; At a higher velocity the slug is more likely to break up completely and the kinetic energy is used up in the process, at slower velocities the kinetic energy is not enough to break it up and is used for forward motion and spin?

Many years ago, I was out on the open range with a band of sheep for months at a time... Just for fun, I would take my Browning 22 lr (SA 22), and from a very low angle skip rounds across a small lake aiming at a target on the opposite shore. The object as a single skip near center bouncing like a pool ball off the rail..... Back in those days 22 lr ammo could be had for $5 for a brick (500 rounds). My “score” wasn’t great, but I did hit the target a bit under 10% of the time @ around 100 yds appx. A fun time killer....

You could try and replicate with some ballistic gel, dial down the power to the point to where the slug will pass through with deformation at a closer range with slow speed video to see if your assumption is correct. Your shot angle might have to be shallow in order to get it to still skip.

Have you noticed when you skim flat stones the bounces go in the direction of spin, a bit different but when the slugs spin has slowed on impact, its deformed state can dictate where it goes on each bounce, and when they bounce close together its only lifting a few mil above the water and the tumbling will make a track on the water as the air is shifting very quickly and violently in the direction of tumble. nice to see it slowed down on film. atb.

To the threshold. Spot on. 5 or 10 €/week. And on top of that it’s amazing how much money you can skim off on your daily life. One example, buying a sandwich and a drink for lunch in the petrol station or from a street vendor versus bringing your own lunch from home. For 22 working days/month. I know it may sound trivial but it adds up. It really does. That’s how I save up for the next pair of binoculars. And when you’re actually there and you can let the money roll....best feeling in the world, because it’s about more than materialism but also about personal discipline and improvement.

I have skipped stones across water, and I always found flat stones worked best. That last mushroomed slug would be perfect to skip. As an aside, a frozen lake will ricochet a bullet with very little loss of velocity. The heat of friction melts the ice and creates a layer of water that acts like a lubricant. It can be very dangerous.
