Jodi Shaw was over the moon when she landed a job at Smith College. As an alum, she loved and trusted Smith. Not for one minute did she believe the college had anything but her best interests at heart. She didn’t question the prevailing narrative the college seemed fixated on promoting at all costs: that systemic racism is rampant, that white people have “white privilege,” and that any white person who fails to acknowledge it suffers from “white fragility.” When Shaw found herself on the growing list of lower level staff irrevocably harmed by this narrative, she began to ask hard questions, ones that would eventually land her in a highly public dispute with one of the most prestigious liberal arts institutions in the country.
An animated and thoughtful speaker, Shaw will recount the story of how she -a lifelong liberal-extricated herself from the grip of an incredibly toxic and damaging ideology at Smith College, and how the “social justice” agendas of elite institutions like Smith hurt lower level staff and cause damage to the campus community at large.
