Skin Safety with Cement + Concrete

Wet cement products like concrete, mortar, and grout can be hazardous to the skin when handled improperly. Workers must understand these hazards, recognized them, and take proper precautions to insure their personal safety and the safety of others.
This video is an excellent training tool for safety meetings to help educate workers on the hazards of working with wet cement. The content is relevant for workers of all ages and experience levels. Use it to train new hires, as a refresher for experienced workers, and even for workers who routinely wear personal protective equipment.

You would be surprised how many people are not aware of this. And I quote, 'We use cement in everything. It's not a dangerous substance until it dries.'

It's actually dangerous while wet, because Calcium Oxide reacts with water to become Calcium Hydroxide (the substance responsible for chemical burns with pH12 or above). As the cement dries it becomes lower in pH. And decreases the chance of a burn.

i've had eye problems for about a month. just realized it was the damn cement i was filling cracks with in my garage. Doh. mixing it indoors is a bad idea without proper ventilation and no goggles. i thought the powder was heavy enough that it wasn't floating up to my eyes.

Doesn’t cement have silica dust in it? Which means breathing that dust into your lungs will cause lung cancer in the long run?

Before I work with any chemical i read all I can find about it in books and in net. In fact I worked with many dangerous chemicals. But if you know with what you will be working and how to protect nothing bad will happen. Thanks for the nice informative clip=

that explains somethings haha. When I was little, my stepfather, made me a small cast of the iron man helmet symbol out of a mold. He filled it with concrete, and it formed perfectly. I played with it for 3-4 hours while it was still damp and drying. I never washed my hands after playing with it that day. The next morning my hands had a thin layer of skin peeling off them!

So I’m a concrete finisher and we work with live cement and I’m not sure what I have but my right hand feels swollen I can’t close it completely and the joints on my fingers hurt. Not sure if that’s from using the float for hours or from the cement.
