Building will always settle, you don’t check soil was “put in properly” you test density to determine the moisture content and compaction. The purpose is to have the highest quality sub grade so whatever is going to be built on top doesn’t have uneven settlement, whether that’s a building, road, etc. The very first comment in the video showed a serious lack of understanding when it comes to job responsibilities and purpose

I cant see why it is the contractors authority what to do with the concrete ,applied with additional water ,than mentioned in the mix design.the concrete starts to set after 15 or more minitues of the last addition of water ,if the wc in the mix design is disturbed ,the contractor is required to verify the strength in the specs can still be met despite the newly added water .i think the inspector should have the authority to reject such concrete unless the concrete is verified for its strength compliance in the specs via labratory tests.from ethiopia i appreciate your videos and thanks a lot

MYTHS 1.) Concrete only last 5-6 years. 2.) You need an aggregate like marbles. 3.) You can't add dyes. 4.) One hour of setting is too early to carve your initials. 5.) You have to wait for it to stop raining to start pouring. 6.) It's tricky to make full size sculptures. 7.) You need a wheel barrow or a hopper. 8.) O'Dell can't get it on. 9.) You have to have a screed or float. 10. You need water for the mix.

Kind Referee, check for soil report, look for loose debris, Rebar tags, wire, rocks and trash. Have the current Plans and any RFIs or changes made to the area to be inspected. Look for simple presentation, is there proper clearance? Is the size of the bar and spacing correct? Is the lap splice correct? Lap splice will change if the PSI of the concrete is 3k or 5k? Check lap schedule. Read general notes!! And if you are on my job give me a break!!

if pouring at a 5 or 6 slump,weaker by just a little than a 4 slump...JUST UPPING YOUR SPEC FROM 4000 PSI TO 4500 is cheap by adding a half sack per yard ...at a $5 yard cost!!!///in the U S,we have made EVERYTHING so complicated that our costs are crazy...i believe in vibrators and 4500 psi concrete...and rebar UP OFF THE BOTTOM OF THAT SLAB!...tearouts where old rebar is laying on the bottom of the slab!...are so common....THESE 3 THINGS are easy,cheap and important..

I've been doing concrete construction over 30 years..this video is nonsense. If you inspectors are such bad ass no it alls. WHY aren't you building it..more rebar than the concrete can bond 2 might as well build the whole building out of rusty steel. Why not fiberglass rods. More steel more weight and tons of concrete weight. Plastic. Shit boards rusty bar. Control joints..need to be filled after pressure wash the. Clean and epoxy filled. No your old lording these jobs. What is my contractors license for bonded insuranced I'm the man doing the job..easy to put your 2cents and say I'm doing it wrong than say it's back on me to take the risk to reward funny.if guys.like me wasn't doing it u would have nothing to inspect..so again..if u see its wrong than why dont.u fix it..

What is the remedy if there are rust on the installed reinforcement?
@steeltown416
@steeltown416 Жыл бұрын
Kind sir, if you have rust on the bar prior to concrete placement you are in good shape. What you want to look for is scale and degradation of the nominal thickness of the Rebar. Also, mud, debris or oil is not allowed on Rebar. Typically during the course of a job the Rebar will not degrade or have enough rust to cause alarm. After a heavy rain a newly delivered load of steel will have light rust as there is no coating applied.

One thing that has always intrigued me is why plastic ties are not used to connect reinforcing together prior to pouring the concrete. Extensive enquiries here in New Zealand have always drawn the same response: it is not known what the structural importance of steel tie wire is, and it is not known what the objection to plastic ties might be. Can you throw any light on this issue? Regards from NZ
@steeltown416
@steeltown416 Жыл бұрын
Kind sir, there is no structural integrity or advantage in tie wire. The amount of the tie wire used in structural concretes design is to keep the Rebar in place at the spacing and coverage specified during concrete placement. Rule of thumb double your wire on heavy mats or columns and high traffic areas. Single ties are sufficient for flatwork such as slab, mesh and light foot traffic. Gauge 15 for bridges and 16.5 for medium to light work.

@@evanpenny348 No worries!! Greetings from California! What also is a good indicator that Tie Wire holds no Structural integrity is that you will not find it mentioned in any of the Structural details called out in the plans. Which means it's not taken into consideration when the engineer makes his calculations. It's just a industry standard tool. Means and method for the contractor to secure Rebar in place. Similar to precast concrete spacers that hold up the Rebar, just a means to hold the bar in place. Cheers 🍻, From a Ironworker on the other side of the world.

that explains somethings haha. When I was little, my stepfather, made me a small cast of the iron man helmet symbol out of a mold. He filled it with concrete, and it formed perfectly. I played with it for 3-4 hours while it was still damp and drying. I never washed my hands after playing with it that day. The next morning my hands had a thin layer of skin peeling off them!

*For anyone wondering why cement is dangerous this is the explanation i found:* Calcium Oxide in cement reacts with water and becomes Calcium Hydroxide. This chemical has a pH of 12 or higher which is extremely alkaline and therefor dangerous. As the concrete cures the surface reacts with CO2 from the air becoming Calcium Carbonate which has a lower pH. Alkaline burns are painless and do not produce any heat. Which is why people do not notice it until it's already to late. In severe cases the burns extend deeper beneath the skin damaging muscle and even bone. In the worst case this can lead to a amputation. Another danger is that inhaling cement dust can burn your lungs. It's also recommended not to eat anywhere near cement to prevent swallowing of this hazardous material which can have its own set of issues.

This mean do you got a job as site quality manager? So you have to test like me the quality of concrete the right position of rod bars according the structural drawings, the respect of minimum thk of concrete to covering the rod bars against corrosion and many other thing according the quality plan part of the Quality Assurance certification. Is hard job and you must be so carismatic and professional under the pressure of the company and site boss who usually think that your job is just to lose time and is not important. Big mistake, when I control I always find mistakes on site work, the common are like these: wrong concrete order by the site chief; missing rod bars; wrong size of concrete aggregates respect the specification; missing certificate of the structural materials; concrete too fluid tested by cone; beam size wrong; no good results of concrete tests after 7 days and 28 days; wrong size of rods bars and still many others. So my job is very very hard I wish you good luck and remember on site no compromise never with the company chief, must be clear for him that you Will check everyparts accordo the % of random no discount so you can get your respect.

I've been in concrete for 15 years went to school for it most off this really only applies to big commercial jobs where the specs of the concrete must meet certain requirements. If you are wanting to build a patio or anything that's not a house foundation or something load-bearing it doesn't really matter. Patios and sidewalk don't necessarily need rebar but i always use it. Fiber mesh in the mix is usually enough. You always want control joins it gives the concrete a place to crack (it always will crack) and it hides them. If the mud shows up dry or stiff and u don't live in Alaska or Arizona (somewhere with extreme temps) add some water. The 1gal/yd3 is a good guide. Little bits at a time so u don't add too much, no way to fix that. If it is hot when u pour wet the ground first. Super dry ground will suck the moisture out of the concrete and make it set premature and under-strength, we call it a flash or snap. For driveways always use rebar or wire mesh. 4' × 8' wire fence panels from home depot or whatever work great or it comes in 150' rolls from any construction supply place. When finishing u want to seal the concrete. Use a mag float to smooth highs and lows and fill the tiny holes in the surface. Don't over work the mud u don't have to fill every hole. Look at some concrete in ur area u'll see tiny holes those allow it to absorb water over time and gain strength. If u pour on a hot day its a good idea to use a cure spray when finished or it can crack all over the surface. If it's not 90° out u can skip the cure but the next day soak it with a hose or sprinkler like all day. Oh also for basic residential concrete I usually go for 4500 psi mix that's usually enough but if ur gonna park a tractor or something heavy on it use the highest bag mix they have and pour it 6" thick. And #4 bar on a 2' grid. Hope that helps sry its so long winded.

Based on our experiences the rebars must be at least 1/2 inch near the surface of the concrete bottom facing the soil and facing upwards in the op surface for any slab foundation. Preferably we require to create a monolithic floating foundation to play it safe, especially for military installations.
