We watched Skinamarink and now we need a Skinama-shrink! This nostalgia-fueled nightmare left us reeling as we descend into this horrifying world of headless children, doorless walls and vanishing parents, one upside down children’s toy at a time. 🙃

I think what distinguishes Skinamarink from other horror movies, is that it really leans into the taboo of children suffering. Yes we’ve seen children die or suffer in other horror movies, but if it’s something like “It” then the monster is named, seen, and defeated: the children were doomed from the start in Skinamarink. There’s no hope and worse yet they have no idea what’s going on. This movie is not only horrifying, it’s also tragic.
@hexgrimoireetc9829
@hexgrimoireetc9829 Жыл бұрын
also to that point, when "It" attacks a child, it torments them and kill them and that's it. With the Skinamarink entity, its implied that Kevin will relive its torture forever or until it gets bored.

For some reason the entity, whatever it is, gave me a demonic "Cat in the Hat" vibe. It was like it got rid of the parents and wanted to play games with the kids. But its idea of play was to put things on the ceiling, trick Kevin with the phone, and play hide n seek with their dead parents. When they didn't want to play, there were consequences.
@Acquilla7
@Acquilla7 Жыл бұрын
I saw someone propose the idea that the entity is ALSO a child, just one with godlike powers, and imo it fits really well. Because a lot of the things it does are very childlike: it forces the kids to watch the cartoons on repeat, focusing on the parts that it likes, it wants to play and doesn't care what anyone else wants to do, it steals the toys that it wants to keep them from the kids, it forces Kevin to harm himself in the same manner a kid might pop the head off a barbie. It's cruel, yes, but it's cruel in the ways that kids are cruel to each other, just dialed up to 11.

I was getting more like sadistic Peter Pan vibes. To me, the entity was like some immortal child that had lost all of its empathy and found pleasure in torturing fellow children.

@@Acquilla7 That was the vibe I was getting too during my first watch, first being the kids are in limbo, but then the thought of what happens to a child thats just there for eternity in that realm, and maybe Kevin and Kaylee have met another resident who has been there for much longer, never growing or aging, and memories of the living world fading away like the windows and faces

I think that kevin died, and because his state of mind was screwed up due to the abuse from parent, it twisted his afterlife into hell

At 25:07 - The phone did not "make him do that." We heard the 9-1-1 call. The demon turned the real phone into the Fisher Price googly-eyed phone. Kevin asked the demon, "Did you do that?" ie. changing the real phone into the toy phone. Instead of answering, the demon laughed at him.

The blood scene at the end... Jesus. I don't know if it was just me or what, but right before the "mommy" subtitle, it sounded like the monster was saying, "ISN'T THIS FUN?" Made the scene that much more terrifying to me.

In my own interpretation, I think that the entity or whatever is haunting the kids was a child itself at one point. From it getting rid of the parents, to wanting to "play" with the kids, to it always having cartoons playing in the house, I feel like it is some kind of sadistic child-like demon. So yes, in that scene, hurting Kevin would be fun to it, in the same way a child might have fun burning ants with a magnifying glass.
@jalenyellowwolf6298

@@darkstorm0433 that scene with blood on the ceiling. If you watch the TV and how it repeats everytime that's what that demon was doing to that poor kid. Killing him and torturing him by making it into a loop of some sort while repeatedly making the kid die again and again.

The "look under the bed" scene is one of the most stressful things I have seen on film. The theory I am going with for this movie is the mother invited some sort of entity into the home (likely by mistake) and it latched on to her. The TV being manipulated at the beginning while the dad took Kevin to the doctor is the entity figuring out its powers. I think the mom is missing or dead from the beginning ("Maybe daddy went with mommy" and "I don't want to talk about mommy.") It is using her visage and voice to manipulate the rest of the family. First it takes the dad. Then it does what it does to Kaylee. Then it sets its sight on Kevin. It learns to manipulate time and space and proceeds to torture Kevin over and over (the rewinding of the blood like the cartoon and the 572 days.) I have seen other good theories, but this one is the most sinister and feels right for the tone of the film.
@TheNraveles
@TheNraveles Жыл бұрын
Pretty much what happened (based on context clues) the father killed everyone. He killed the mom first, basically forcing the children to watch, killed kaylee in front of Kevin, and then killed Kevin. During the time he was abusive to everyone, hence Kevin “falling” down the stairs and getting no medical attention, kaylee with her “missing mouth”, and then the mom telling kaylee to go downstairs and pretty much keeping her away from the abuse against the mom. The demon/ghost/etc is the father. He’s basically torturing Kevin since he’s the last one and is constantly “killing him”. It’s basically their own hell, sadly. I also feel the end is directed specifically at the viewer, not Kevin. So it’s asking US our name, US what we’re doing, telling us to sleep, etc etc and answering can technically bring the creature to you

@@TheNraveles They took Kevin to the hospital though and his dad did sound concerned to some degree at least. I’m more inclined to think Kevin falling down the stairs in the beginning is the demon pushing him, rather than a murderous dad. Maybe it’s my own bias since that just sounds like the plot of The Shining to me, but it doesn’t sound quite right. Since the movie is told through the eyes of the kids, I would think the confusion of someone you love and look up to abusing you and murdering your entire family would be expressed more explicitly. It’s still a cool theory though

At 18:05 - Why did Kaili tell them to move the couch? It was to block the stairway from upstairs, which was terrifying with "peek-a-boo Mom and Dad" and the sound of bones breaking. This isn't a "let's just redecorate" moment, but "let's set up a barricade from the scary thing upstairs" moment.

I still haven't figured out the actual "real life" scenario of how the characters GOT to this point (where the movie started). However, my theory is that the entire movie is based on Kevin slipping into a coma from his fall and his life is slowly fading away. The viewer is watching as his mind is essentially dying. The disappearing items in the house are his mind slipping away and not recognizing simple things anymore....including his sister who can no longer communicate with him and eventually disappears. The flashlights are the doctors looking into his eyes and trying to get some sort of a response of him "coming back." The voices can be anything from doctors to family to whomever "on the outside" telling him to come back, but his dying mind is registering those voices as garbled & unrecognizable. You're basically viewing the movie from his mind and the final scene is him just about to pass over into....wherever he's going.

I went into this movie totally blind, with extremely low expectations, and came out of it shaking from head to toe and just chanting "what the fuck" over and over. SEVERAL times I had to pause and just shake my head and say "no." out loud, because I couldn't grasp/handle/accept what the hell was happening. Something about the atmosphere put me into a trance and fully immersed me in the movie. I've still never had the heart to rewatch it, and I don't know if i ever will. edit: aaaaand I think watching it at home is honestly a better experience. I like to watch people's reactions to things i've ALREADY seen, but for something like this, for the first time, I wouldn't want to be around a bunch of other people who might be whispering or whatever.

This is a very polarizing movie, I have only ever seen two reactions to it which is either “This was terrifying and I couldn’t sleep” or “this was boring and pretentious as hell”. I am firmly in the former camp but I understand the latter, it is not a movie that will hit for everybody and it’s called experimental for a reason, it’s taking a chance and unfortunately for plenty of people it just won’t have the intended effect. I’m glad these guys got the response the director was hoping for

Pretty much, how I see it is: The father is the main antagonist of the movie and is the demon/creature/apparition. Killed the mother, lied to the kids and was basically abusing everyone. Kaylee found out, and she was killed. Then Kevin was the one left over and was constantly abused and tortured and then is stuck in a coma by the father, who then killed himself to not face any repercussions. This is basically the family’s shared hell. The mom is helpless to her children’s suffering, the father controls the house as he did before and is mentally and physically torturing the children, and sadly the children are stuck in between it all and are trying to move onto a better form, especially Kevin who isn’t exactly dead yet but is in the middle/limbo. The ending is him finally moving on. Also the ending itself seems like it’s directed to us, the viewers, and answering can technically pull US into the hell itself, so we’d be the next ones there and deal with these childhood nightmares come to life.
@Acquilla7
@Acquilla7 Жыл бұрын
Interesting; I had the opposite read and thought it was the mother that was the one that was abusive. I thought that the way that Kaylee talked about her and reacted whenever she was mentioned was very telling, especially since she was the older of the two and thus would be better able to recognize that something isn't right, even if she doesn't have the words to describe abuse yet.

Really enjoyed your reaction and it was so fun watching you clutch each other and be scared at 3 in the morning. 😂 and of course your reaction comments are always the best. Adore you both and the adore the channel. And YES, WE WANT THE PARANORMAL STORY! This film plays on the abstract cerebral, and grows anxiety and terror off the unseen. It plays almost like those few moments when you wake from a dream and you’re in a hotel room- you don’t know where you are and you’re not sure if you’re still dreaming. The room is wrong and nothing looks right. Panic. Before you realize and remember where you are that is. But that’s the kind of head space and panic this film is attempting to invoke. Its’ fear triggers are also more about the anticipation of something horrifying than actually showing the horrifying. Aiming to be disorienting and atmospheric, I think it does a good job of keeping the viewer off kilter. That being said, it’s also very student film-esque, and while it’s quality and the way it’s shot can be charming, it lags a great deal, but it’s disorienting shots work, at first; but after awhile they start to play like a bit of a gimmick with no payoff. And I felt a bit cheated by the ending. This film shows a lot of potential though, and I’m excited to see what the writer director will offer next.

It took like a month for me to work through and realize I really liked this movie. I side with mom killed the kids and they're stuck in some kind of recurring limbo where they loosely re-live their deaths again and again. That being said, that's all a dream, probably Kevin's dream. This is one giant amalgamation of multiple dreams/nightmares Kevin has had, with some interesting misdirects or details added in to get you wondering. Are these nightmares? We're told Kevin hit his head while falling down the stairs sleepwalking. Is he in a coma and his memories or dreams are all kinds of jumbled and terrifying? Who knows. What I do know is if I were to remember my dreams and nightmares when I was around 5 years old I bet some of them would kind of be like this. It didn't scare me particularly much but it did suck me in like it did you two. The noise filter over the entire film was very clever. I was seeing shapes of people and faces everywhere

In regards to the 'put the knife in your eye' line, I finally have a theory as what the hell this is. This film is about a child who heard voices who told them to do terrible things to themselves and their family didn't know what to do about it. They also hallucinated their family doing and saying strange things all the time, the doors and objects in the house disappearing, and they never knew what was real and what wasn't.

Maybe the entity is kevin, his mind twisted after so long that he thinks of the children as toys, and tells them to do things like a cruel child would, the knife could be similar as a child getting enjoyment from wrecking an ant hill The cartoons allude to a time loop,

I agree with the childhood suffering angle, to a point. My read of this film is that this boy's (Kevin) injury from the accident was worse than the doctor's thought, he was concussed and should not have gone to sleep when he went home. He eventually into a coma, and his mind was trying to make sense of things as he drifted away. 572 days he how long he was unconscious , and the growls were actually not growls but the distorted voices of the people/doctors around him - probably discussing his treatment. My theory is that he was eventually taken off life support due to brain death, and this was his brain dying.

My theory is that this demon or entity is keeping these two kids trapped in this void, torturing them for years as they slowly lose their sanity and identity. The house is distorting more and more as the children begin to forget what their house looked like before they died. The demon might even be the mother's spirit? I definitely see themes of neglect and child abuse with the messy toys laying all around, no parents are present as these kids are completely isolated.

I luv y'all energy! Watched many yt videos about this film. This may be the most fun! BTW, this is somewhat like the Twighlight Zone episode It's A Good Life. Looking at it like that makes it less scary.

the reason why the kids only use flashlights and the lights are off is bc the kids are so young so they are too short to reach the light switch

My husband and I watched this the night before and Man. I looove anything spooky but this kinda hit me a bit. It reminds me of how spooked I was after watching those silly jk cinema videos from ebaums world back when I was in middle school. Those videos used to keep me up at night. I learned years and years ago most of those videos were super fake but still haunts me today. Ive seen many theories of this movie being either paranormal or child abuse. And its hard to pick one cause both makes alot of sense.

I think Skinamarink does a really good job of reminding us why we get scared. Horror as a genre relies on jumpscares and gross out for the most part, because it can't simulate real fear. At it's core fear is something we're scared of experiencing ourselves and yeah we can look at, say, a Saw trap or a gruesome death and think "yep, that'd suck" and we have a very basic knee-jerk reaction to it, typically disgust or aversion or whatever, and it's kind or sort of like fear if you squint, it's fun, it's fine. But that's not really scary, because you can understand what's happening, and even if you can't get out, you understand why you can't get out. Final Destination isn't scary because of the deaths, it's somewhat scary (at least at first) because of the idea that death itself is after you - that's scary, because you can't get away from it. That's why as kids we're scared of the coat on the back of our door that looks like a tall man in the dark - because as a child, we don't know what it is, and we don't know what to do about it, and it's really hard to recreate that for an adult. That's where Skinamarink is awesome, I think, it does a really good job of simulating that child-like fear, because just like the kids in the movie, we don't know what's happening or what to do about it, all we can do is sit here and watch them suffer while our senses are bombarded and we're left helpless and frustrated. We fear it because we don't want to experience it, but the movie is the experience we don't want to have.

hopefully, you guys can make this movie more interesting to me. I was intrigued when I heard of it, but I tried to watch it 3x, and it just wasn't keeping my attention, or making me afraid. I thought, maybe watching it through other peoples eyes, and with their commentary, will work. 🤷

I really loved the long shots of the dark hallways and doors. I think there really wasnt anything there but your mind starts imagining things that arent there especially with the creepy ambience that this movie creates, it gets you freaked out. I had to sleep with the lights on after watching this lol

See, this is why I don’t want to die indoors. I’d much rather be outside and free to wonder the woods, the beaches, the mountains, the lakes and streams, rather than to be stuck in a house/apartment/whatever building and have no way out, for who knows how long. No thank you. I played a video game back before you guys were born, that was about a haunted house, and restless spirits you had to liberate. They were stuck in the last moments of death. One was a grieving WWII war widow that blew her brains out in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Once you got a machine working that allowed you to enter their ghostly realities, in her’s, the radio changed the room you were in. One station was the bedroom with her corpse lying on the floor and blood on the walls, another station was the kitchen, another the living room. Everything was in black and white in her reality, and when you turned the radio dial, between stations/rooms there was nothing but static all around you, like an old TV tuned to no station. Anyway, that game stuck with me, and anytime I hear about ghosts stuck in a house, I think of that game. “Amber” I think it was called.
