"Because you were home" is the most chilling line I've heard in a movie, tbh. It's so cruel.

It's the reason I recommend this movie to horror fans. It's the most disturbing possible answer to that question.

What's so scary is how easily something like this could happen in real life. Stuff like this happens all the time. Maybe not exactly like this. But home invasions and stalking. That's real life. Sometimes at random for no reason whatsoever.

For those who are curious, there are 3 true story inspirations to this movie: 1. Helter Skelter and the Manson family in 1969 2. The Keddie Cabin Murders in 1981 3. The director’s personal experience. When he was a child, there was a group of robbers in his neighborhood and they’d knock on the doors of the houses to see if people were home. If no one answered, they’d rob the house. And if the door was answered, they’d ask if a made up person was there.

#3 happened to me when I was 10. I was home alone watching VH1 music videos and someone rang the doorbell, I ignored it because my mom had already told me about stranger danger, kidnappers, etc. I just turned the music down and waited. They rang the doorbell about 5 times then it went quiet, I though they left so I went to the kitchen - at the end of the kitchen theres a window and a door that leads to the backyard - and as I'm pouring water into a glass I look to my left and see a guys face pressed against the window with his hands cupped around his face. (it was like 12pm so he was trying to look inside) I ran to my room, locked the door and hid under the bed. I heard him breaking the window, footsteps in the house & whispering and thats when I realized it wasnt just 1 guy.. it was 3-4 guys. Anyways, theyre running around the house going through all the rooms and when they got to mine, they noticed the locked door and began kicking my door down. I was SO scared that I accidentally let out a scream like, I actually thought I was going to be taken and killed and my mom would never even know. ** Also, this was 2007 so I had no phone or anything and my mom wasnt going to be home until 5pm. Luckily, it was just a bunch of younger guys trying to steal things and they thought nobody was home because no one answered the door. As soon as I screamed they all took off running but I was too scared to do anything so I stayed under the bed until my mom got home. TO THIS DAY, if someone rings my doorbell and I'm not expecting them, I get horrible anxiety. The guys were never caught and I remember being angry that the cop didnt do more to find them lol I was expecting a full CSI team to show up and dust for fingerprints or something. Its crazy how theyve all probably forgotten about it but its permanently seared into my brain, I remember it like it was yesterday and the fear is always present. I always tell people that someday theyre going to need to defend themselves one day so they better be prepared. Most robberies happen during the day. The police will not be there within 1 minute and a lot can happen during that time. Its scary but important to know that theres awful people hunting all the time & you can live a perfect life, be a good person and still be targeted. Be careful with how much you show off online too.

I think you missed Kristin telling James that she just wasn’t ready to get married yet. She still loves him, she just wasn’t prepared for marriage. She definitely did die, that’s why the opening said the events of that night still aren’t known. They just wanted to leave us with one final jump scare. “Because you were home” is still the most chilling motive I think I’ve ever heard.

This movie really messed with me the first time I saw it! I remember going to see this in theaters by myself when I was a teen...at night. I drove home right after, ran inside my house and locked the doors and double checked the windows. When I couldn't find my cell phone I realized I had left it in my car. I dreaded going back out, but I ran back to my car, got my phone and locked the door behind me so fast. Then I waited until my mom got home. Out of all the horror movies I have seen, I think this one has scared me the most because it is something that can happen.

When it comes to the "inspired by true events" part of this movie, it's somewhat accurate. The filmmakers were inspired by the Manson Murders in the 1960s as well as an experience the director had growing up. Lol I love the Strangers. Really builds the suspense and plays on the real-life fear of someone intruding on your home, which is supposed to be like your safe space.

What instantly drew me to this back then was the creepy use of "The Sprout and The Bean" by Joanna Newsom in the movie trailer, along with the mysterious masked killers. I finally sat down and watched it and it is one of those slow burn movies that get you at the end! I never saw the 2nd one because the reviews but I might, soon just to get it out of the way! Also, the Glenn Howerton (pre-It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) cameo/death was SOOOO unexpected. I am excited for the 3rd film! I hope it keeps the dark tone! 3rd times the charm!

This movie stresses me out. I had to take a break halfway through this reaction. I saw The Strangers in theaters way back when, and I haven’t stayed in our family’s country house again. Home invasion horror is the only kind that truly scares me. (Ok, maybe also shark/ocean movies too.) This is why I live in an urban area with high crime - to feel safe from situations like this. If someone’s gonna take me out, there won’t be time for games. 😊

Have either of you watched 'Session 9' before? It's a lower-budget horror movie filmed on location at a now-destroyed, then-haunted insane asylum with a pretty dark history of its own. It's so imposing that it is basically a character in the story. Spooky flick, for sure. Worth a watch. So are all the making of docs that go into the history of the hospital itself, and the supernatural experiences the cast had on set, if that's your jam.

Alright my favorite Queens, now that you have seen this you have to watch The Strangers Prey at Night. The reaction to this movie was fantastic and I remember watching this movie the first time and just being glued to my seat. Liv Tyler’s boyfriend James was played by Scott Speedman who was also well known for playing Michael in the Underworld movies. This movie was loosely based on the Manson killings of Sharon Tate and her friends.

And you remember Hollywood Video! One thing that tripped me out about the early part of this movie is...they're sitting at a red light in the middle of the night with noone else there! What's the point? I think Prey At Night got some hate, didn't know if the studios would continue this as a franchise because of that. I personally enjoyed both films, seems like the "Strangers" outfits became Halloween costumes for a while there.

Protips from somebody who loves horror but won't do anything resembling true crime: --if the year they're saying it happened in is so recent that anyone who died could have loved ones still alive and there's no supernatural: it's fiction. --if its so recent that the people involved are still alive, there's supernatural elements, and the movie doesn't say anything about changing ppl's names: fiction -- if anything is happening that makes you think more police or surveillance might be helpful, or any variation on "but even if it didn't happen, it COULD": it won't, because it's fiction, and also propaganda for how criminals do crime because they're Just Evil and the only hope of protecting yourselves is give law enforcement more weapons instead of acknowledging crime exists mostly as a last resort when society denies people any other resource.

I first saw this movie when I rented it in 2009. I'd gone to see The Haunting of Molly Hartley earlier that night, but I liked The Strangers more, hehe. It really freaked me out because 1) I watched it alone at night in my apartment and 2) I had a night shift that night afterwards at a residence home out in the country, so that added to the fright. I have a fear of home invasions partly because of this movie.
