i love the way the manipulative mean girl trope is deconstructed with mika, where the author really tries to understand why someone would act that way, and what that level of emotional awareness would mean for that character.

One thing I found really surprising and wonderful was how even though mitsumi realized she had a crush on shima she deliberately said she didn’t feel the need to act on it immediately and would continue being friends with him. Usually in romance manga when a character realizes they have romantic feelings for another, they make it their goal for the rest of the chapters until they get together with them or are rejected. Skip to loafer is just too refreshing. Thank you for the beautiful analysis, I love your stuff!!
@linesinmotion2 жыл бұрын
This is another really good point! She clearly holds feelings for him, but she wasn't given the normal "pursuit" arc or moments that so many other female LI's are given within this genre. That's a good point I didn't think about actually, nice! Thank you for watching!

my favorite thing in this manga is when (spoilers!) they get together and then break up, not out of malice or anything, it just wasn’t working. that’s such a refreshing take because even if you’re with the right person it can be the wrong time, i feel like usually in romance manga they don’t cover that concept much, if at all. and during the scene where they break up, mitsumi has a line that basically goes “whether you’re old or young, man or woman, i can still think of you as my friend” (showing that she likes shima not for his people pleasing but as a person) and it’s just so cute, i love skip and loafer.
@ss4ndw1ch10 ай бұрын
also this part isn’t about the romance but nao is such an important character to me as a trans person. the way the issues with being trans are a very important part of her character, but she still has a complete personality and a support system outside of it is wonderful. usually when i see trans characters in manga or really anything, either they completely pass and are just there or it’s all about the bad stuff of being trans, i haven’t found much good in between, and i think skip and loafer does it perfectly
@calmpupper6 ай бұрын
Thank you for this comment!! Yes skip and loafer really tries to paint a more realistic picture on relationships, and also helping us humanise + empathise with the different people in society (in this case for eg, trans ppl). so refreshing to see a male lead who is kind to everyone and not just the girl he likes, even the girls who hit on him he turns them down gracefully, saying stuff like ''i dont know her that much, and i think she has other interests more than being friends'', i like this manga so much it hurts lol

I feel like you, most school romance stories feel a little monotone to me. But skip to loafer is just such a beautiful story! I truly feel my heart warm when I’m reading it. The characters truly feel their age, they have realistic emotions , go through experiences kids go through and it just makes my heart bloom. It truly feels like just watching this kids be kids and that’s the best. It’s so human. Thank you for getting it out there and showing how good it is. This was such a lovely video !

I love these dorks! With a lot of romance manga, the aim of the storytelling is usually to make the reader go "I want to see these two characters get together". S&L instead makes me go "I could see myself being friends with these kids back in school". Every character feels very human, and their relationships are layered and evolve organically. A manga I've been reading to deal with Skip & Loafer withdrawal and that gives me very similar vibes (though leaning much more towards comedy) is You and I are Polar Opposites.

There's a new girl character introduced (Yasaka) and it's another character troupe: the bitchy/snake type who manipulates boys feelings and steals other gf's bf!! I'm so excited or rather very hopeful in her being included in their friend group. Idk, but she only has been in a few scenes, much more unpleasant and problematic than Mika, but I loved her right away! Shima, Mika, and Yasaka (the new character) are very similar in a sense that they developed people pleasing as a means of being accepted and loved. But Yasaka has much more darker undertones in the few panels she's in, subtly telling that behind that manipulative way of seeking attention lies a lonely girl with depression in her dark messy room. Unlike Mika, she wasn't snarky or bitchy, per se, (good girl smiling face persona) but problematic in finding healthy relationships around her. Unlike Mika, she sees right through Mitsumi's kindness with her cluelessness and lack of judgement (when almost all have been ostracizing her bec of relationship dramas) and here's our MC reaching out, trusting her and sharing a very vulnerable part of her life whom she haven't even shared with her group of friends. Yasaka right away became.my 2nd fav girl in the Manga next to Mitsumi. Also, the wholesomeness of Skip and Loafers friend group reminds me of Kono Oto Tomare, a manga about a group of very different teenagers bonded together towards playing a traditional japanese instrument. The development of bad girl troupe turned great friend was also greatly done in Kono Oto Tomare and their club bonding also makes you feel good and wanting to make memories with shared experiences with other groups of people!

@ardenamarelo Жыл бұрын
People always disagree with me for disliking many of the popular romance animes and mangas. My most common complaint is the problematic themes in these stories. Even shows like Fruit Basket, which is loved for its healthy relationships and serious subject matter, perpetuate the idea of "age is just a number" with high schoolers and grown men. Or Blue Spring Ride and Ouran Host Club that both have "almost" SA scenes and play them off as "just boys being boys" and go so far to defend the creepy behavior by saying the male lead was teaching the female lead to be weary of other men. Everything you said in this video really sum up my feelings about Skip and Loafer. The manga is void of all typical problematic romance anime tropes, and tells insightful lessons all readers can enjoy. The unexpected relatability of the characters and the positive outcomes of each character arc motivate me to better myself. Skip and Loafer goes beyond what the standard for slice of life/romance should be. And I absolutely love all of the positive LGBTQ+ representation, Mako even has two gays dads. Personally I still have hope yuzu and mako will end up together haha. If only I read this before entering high school I am looking forward to the possibility of bonding with new people in college though

Mitsumi and Shima loving dynamic feels so refreshing at some point I think to myself that whatever their relationship will be I will be proud of both of them. SPOILER ALERT. The latest chapter is kinda hurt to read but I love it at the same time. The arc of their relationship is so rich and full of layers. I appreciate the decision to make Shima confused with his own feelings (even if it makes us feel bad), and I love how Mitsumi admits her disappointment towards Shima. Every flawed trait of both characters makes them so human that it makes me cherish the story even more!

might add this, i think one point of skip and loafer that i really like was the author never emphasize too much on the character bad traits, especially on Mika and Ririka. in other manga those two would be seen as evil villain that's unforgivable and would do anything to separate the ML and FL, which skip and loafer author not doing. That part makes the character feels human and can still redeemed especially for Mika and how having people with positive attitude can really change you. Might be controversial take, but i really like how Ririka character written, she's still a shit character (especially what she did to Shima) but very well written, given her age and what happened to her in the past, part of me think that she's just immature and she just clinging tightly to past mistake and bitter memories too much which i think Shima did too, where both of them just held captive by their past altho Shima never being shit to other unlike Ririka. I kinda relate to certain points due to some ressentment in the past, but at very least Ririka realize and admit it herself which i think harder than it looks to admit it especially she said it to someone else (Chris) and her breakdown feels very human to me. I don't think i want to see her character being redeemed because Shima himself still contacting her despite all that, i just want to see her finally get a closure to her past self because i think it's definitely would affect Shima too.

The way you are describing yuzuki as some victim. Yet they way you are saying it is that yuzuki is someone who closes her self off from others thinking that she is better then them. Taking everyone as face value and believing that the only reason why people approach her is to get her to like them. So far what I’m seeing is she never even gave the chance to anyone and just created assumptions of the bat at face value.

I would like to recommend a similar but slightly different school romance anime called 'Tsuki ga kirei'. It is beautiful love story between a boy and a girl which starts as two shy people just having a chat with eachother. They start to awkwardly trying to figure out what to do when one is in a relationship to getting extremely fond of eachother by the end of the story.

It has already been two years, huh. This video takes me back when I didn't know anything about anime or manga, and I was looking for some recommendation on KZbin. Good thing I found your channel, your first recommendation video actually made me acknowledge of manga as a medium. Anyway, this manga in particular stook to me the most, and I'm happy it did, this manga rules. Great video as always, I think you nailed the reason why I love this manga so much. My favourite character is Nao-chan, I Love her kindness and just how happy she makes Mitsumi. Also, the relationship between Yazuku and Makoto kinda made the same impression to me and my friend as well, so I don't think you are projecting too much xd. Thanks for the content, love your videos!!! Abrazos.

Oh wow, I'm glad you were able to find the video so randomly then haha! I'm happy to hear you enjoy Skip and Loafer so much, and Nao is easily one of my favourite characters along with Yuzuki The supporting cast is so lovable ☺️

If anyone is looking for a manga series to read while waiting for the next chapter to release or the anime to come out, I would recommend checking out "Busu ni Hanataba wo." You'll like that manga for reasons similar to "Skip to loafer."

i may sound rude but although i agree with everything you’ve said, while skip and loafer is an excellent romcom slice of life manga, it isn’t slice of life at its best. slice of life are often paired with romance, comedy or a little bit of tragedy, but usually the slice of life nature of things would take a back seat to its genre pair. even series whose titles literally spell out slice of life, nichijou and danshi kokousei no nichijou, are overwhelmed by their comedic aspects. so for me, it’d have to be fumiyo kouno’s works. it seems petty of me to focus on just one aspect of your video essay, but i just wanted to mention this author as a means to share my favourite stories in one of my favorite genres. fumiyo’s works push the genre to the forefront, storyboarding an aspect, event or day of her protagonist, and i often feel like i’m really spending an afternoon with them. her stories do, but rarely change perspectives. the changes in focus on each character in the ensemble works wonders for character building, but puts the reader perspective. fumiyo’s works, due to only focusing on one character, puts the reader in the second perspective, and i think this effectively makes us live through or experience the character’s life in a more personal way, which complements the slice of life aspect. for example, pippira note entirely centers on a girl bonding with her bird pippira, or the first chapter of country of cherry blossoms where 3 pages are spent chronicling how a boy spends his afternoon. my favorite story of hers is long road, which tells the story of a humble and cheery housewife, and while there’s only 3 pages per chapter, it really makes us feel like we’ve spent a day with her, looking at a slice of her life. fumiyo kouno’s representation of an average person’s life is just awesome so that’s what i’d like to share. her storyboarding style might gel with you since you’re a fan of animation, unless you’e already recommended her works then this would be really embarrassing. great video nonetheless!
