I was never personally offended by the Redskins logo (I am Lakota, representing Standing Rock) But a lot of the elders were. I never really understood why because I was never taught my language or other traditions and that can be traced back to my grandma. She went to one of the boarding school and a lot of the native students were punish badly for speaking or even Referencing their respective culture. I guess my grandma didn't want her kids going through that so she never taught them traditions In the end tho, she practiced traditions again. So speaking for that 5% that say they aren't offended, we simply weren't educated and I really do wish it were otherwise "It only takes ONE generation to lose the language. The Trail of Tears was a direct consequence of US government policy toward Native American tribes in the Eastern US during the 19th Century. Not really related to the Washington Redskins. (The team was probably named after one of the Native tribes that lived west of the Rocky Mountains.)

We still have the Cleveland Indians - considering Indians has been incorrectly applied to them for hundreds of years. Of course Braves and Chiefs are respectful names and should not be changed. Same with the Florida State Seminoles, who actually sought out and received the permission of the Seminole tribe.

I'm not a Skins fan but I'm from that area and for years there have been Natives saying that they find the term offensive. Dan Syndor invites elders out to games and lines their pockets to try to keep them appeased. Braves, Chiefs, etc. are all safe though.

Skip is way off from defing where the term "redskin" came from. The moors of canaanland, who were mislabeled as indians later on, wore the blood of their enemies when at war, which gave them the appearance of having red skin. As much as you do research on the analitics of sports before making an opinion on lebron, jordan, kobe, etc..., you should research the history of words just as carefully.

What is the derogatory part of chief! Chief is an official title inside a native american tribe. Missouri is literally named after an Indian tribe. Redskin is a derogatory term. So is Indian. That is why those names need to change and chiefs, braves blackhawks and seminoles are all honoring the native american history in their areas. Redskins is not.

I'm only 50 percent Navajo and never had any bad experience with the name Redskin. BUT hearing how my little cousins get called "dirty redskins" by their fellow classmates for them to come home crying gets me boiled and see why this name is harmful. If you are a true fan of the team, lookup the name and find out why the name is controversial. There's plenty of reasons.
