I'm Puerto Rican but have Cherokee and Taino ancestry. Maybe I am a bit biased since that is so far back in my background, but I never took offense to the name. Reading it first hand it does seem racist to a extent. But when you look at the history of the team being mostly composed of Native Americans in the 1930's, it doesnt seem all that much racist. However there is two sides to this. The name refers to Warriors that would cover their face and body in red paint. Hence Redskins. However during the 1940's in the west, there was bounties on Native Americans. People would say go get the redskins for money. So yes, to some it is highly offensive. But to others it may not be and may be a sign of tribute to their ancestry. For me, I was born knowing the name just like most of you. So Cowboys vs Redskins will never be the same for me again. I do think they should go with Washington Warriors though and pay proper respect. Or change the logo to a red potatoe 😂

I grew up in the DC area in the 80's, and nobody ever had a problem with the Redskins name. Their biggest rival at least since the 60's was the Cowboys, so it made sense. Cowboys vs Redskins. After growing up, and now being 47 years old, and learning, I think it's now time to change the name. From a business standpoint it is a no brainer for Daniel Snyder. As a business nowadays, you have to create a zero tolerance for anything that can be deemed offensive to anyone or else you face endless criticism, and eventually lack of sales. I love tradition, but if your tradition can be seen as hurtful to some people, the best thing to do is change it. I just hope the new name stays with the idea of celebrating the Native American culture and spirit, because they are really un represented in the minds of Americans in 2020.

So, I have two distinct reactions to this... 1. Glad to see the name finally going. Washington should never have used that nickname in the first place. Zero regrets about seeing that change finally happen. 2. Be careful what you wish for in terms of cheering the pressure put by large corporations to make this change. This change didn't happen because Washington finally saw the light and realized they wanted to do the right thing... BUT also Amazon and Pepsi and FedEx didn't suddenly see that light either. For them it was about risk of consumer backlash given the current climate where it seems more people are serious about demanding change to old problems. Remember Amazon is still the same company that pays zero federal taxes and is making record profits right now during the pandemic, even as it doesn't want to pay its employees living wages and help them keep safe. We like when the corporate overlords wield their power to do a thing we want... but they can (and do) wield that power every day to do lots of things we don't want. So even as you might want to be happy about forcing Washington to finally change their name... be wary of the corporate entities that used their power to force this... because next time they might be forcing change you don't want... and it will never be about what is right, but what makes them money.

A Blackfoot tribe member, however, did design the logo... which probably explains why the logo for the team is not a caricature like some other teams have had in the past. I feel like that guy was trying to make the best of a bad situation, and probably figured if they were going to have the name anyway, why not design a non-offensive logo at least so they could be proud of that reference.

I understand the redskins argument because ive been hearing native people complain about it my entire life.... but ive never heard any of us complain about the braves, or the chiefs, or anything like that.
