@stacytanner734623 күн бұрын
I inherited my grandmothers large over grown schefflera when she passed. It was at least 10 years plus. I didn’t know much about keeping plants so I kept it outside in the Louisiana heat for nearly 4 years. It was repotted probably 2 years in. Completely root bound I tossed it in a pot that was way too big in plain garden soil and it just kept living. About a year and a half ago I decided to drag it inside and care for it properly. I set it up in my sunroom with my lonely snake plant and aloe.I gave it a scale treatment, a big trim and new pot in proper soil.I didn’t want to toss away all the cuttings so I propagated so many babies(scale free). Some in soil and some in water to see what method worked best. This started my journey into the houseplant hobby. I ended up with so many baby plants. Now most of my coworkers and friends have a piece of my grandmothers tree. I kept one baby who is thriving and added quite a few different plants over the last year or so. The mother plant never looked better and I hope to have it for many years to come.
@soberplantguy23 күн бұрын
That is a lovely story 😊 How did you end up treating scale? They are so persistent!
@stacytanner734621 күн бұрын
@soberplantguy Thank you. I treated the scale with Captain Jack Insecticidal Super Soap. I waited until evening and soaked the entire surface of the plant. I made sure to get under the leaves and down the trunk. I repeated this treatment once a week for three weeks. A couple days after spraying I would inspect the plant and wipe the leaves with diluted white vinegar to give them a shine and to scrape off every scale bug I could find. It took some patience and I made a mess every time but I haven't seen any more. I still check it when I clean the leaves every few weeks.

I actually moved my Exotica to a fairly bright spot because it wanted to send out leafless runners. No one has time for that. In Manula news, I spent $25 on a fairly small plant, but kept looking for a cheap one that I could pot up with it for a fuller pot. Still haven't found a cheap one, but my small one has grown so much that it really isn't necessary now. The mini schefflera that used to live on my desk at work pre-lockdown has grown really long and kind of diagonal. I'm too chicken to cut it off, though. As far as my favorite "cheap-and -common" . . . I have an actual Thanksgiving cactus problem. They keep following me home. 😬

You illustrate a point I'm constantly harping on: plants react differently for any number of reasons in different homes! I have a personal grudge against my Ficus tree. It's one of the plants we got with the house, it sits outside in a humongous pot under another tree, and it survived several months out there without batting a leaf, during summer. Have I mentioned I live in a Mediterranean climate? Yeah, zero rain in summer. My mom took one look at it and told me to check the bottom. Turned out to be kinda hard to do when you can't move it because it's rooted its way through the pot down into the ground. My husband, reasonably burly as he is, couldn't even flip it on its side. Now I have to figure out, first, how we cut it out of its perch, and then how we kill the remaining roots, which are conveniently located right next to the house and the water main. I guess I can see how it might be visually appealing if it were a reasonably sized houseplant, it's just the potential property damage that isn't working for me... Another great video! PS; I don't like moss poles either. We can be outcasts together.

Hi Dave, Thanks for the advice last week on my two OG Hoyas. As you know I have caught the Hoya Bug. The Hoyas that I ordered are all doing well and all but one are growing like crazy. Most came in moss and I understand that might not be the best substrate to grow them in. I am mostly a just "right waterer" as I am retired and have all the time in the world to baby my plants. I'm not inclined to repot them as they are putting out leaves and seem happy. I know there might be problems down the line with this but am not clear as to what they might be. The plants I love the most in my collection are P. Micans, Syngonium Three Kings, My Rick Rack Cactus P. Brasil, and my String of Buttons. I am so pleased for you at how your channel has taken off. All the best to you.
@soberplantguy5 ай бұрын
Looks like we have similar taste in plants--except for string of anything. I love how those look, but I just see the man ways I would probably unalive one of those beauties 😅 The problem with moss is compounded over time. As more and more roots grow into it, and through it, it becomes a nightmare to separate them, even with a bowl of water. Over a couple of years, as my friend with a huge collection has discovered, they will all start dying. She just spent an enormous amount of time repotting them and has sworn off moss altogether. But, it's not an emergency or anything. While I would get them out, that doesn't mean *you* need to. Cheers from Iowa City!

Where did you get the wire cage type trellis that the Hoya was on?
@soberplantguy5 ай бұрын
I made it, and made this video about it (the first part is making it, the second part wrapping plants, so you don't need to watch the full video). kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2moY4aDltGMd5Ysi=hdlQKI8VkqyxWtKo I hope it's helpful !

Thanks Dave! Love your videos. How did you propagate the shefflera? Please advice.
@soberplantguy3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! Couldn't' be easier to propagate. Treat is exactly as an aroid: make sure you have at least one node, and that it is in your substrate (I used perlite in a cup). They root very quickly. I still haven't re-homed the one from the video, and oh boy, look at her now...!

Agree that pearlite propagation is better. Also not a fan of Ficus except….my ficus triangularis.💚

I live in Nebraska! About an hour outside omaha. I would absolutely love to buy plants/cuttings from you. Do you sell them? Do you ship as well? I didn't know I needed a schefflora until you whipped your juvenile one out. They are beautiful.

I love shipping to Nebraska! You can always reach out to soberplantguy@gmail.com. Cheers from clear over here 😃

Dave I bought the three soil ammendments you suggested/like. Can I get the formula you use? Thanks
@soberplantguy5 ай бұрын
Sure thing! If I'm using the "perfect size" vessel for the plant, It's 1/3 of each component. In a bigger than usual pot, I make it chunky, by feel. For very thirsty plants, more coir, plants that want to dry quickly, more chips. But rule of thumb is thirds. Cheers, and good growing ☺

I hope you do! I like the lighter version much better. For whatever reason, the other one doesn't have that trademark funky-shaped leaf thing going on. Best of luck to you 😀

Well, my record with Ficus benjamina (variegated) does NOT look healthy like your green one! I made a huge boo-boo and put it in a stupid slow to dry out plastic pot…..part of it is very wilty and the other part is recovering. Even with a chunky soil it is suffering.

I made plenty of "mistakes" along the way with mine. I wish I'd had the foresight back when I started ours over to know that future Dave would have a KZbin channel 😆 I would have taken a before pic. Now it's easy, breezy to care for. Best of luck with yours.

I love common plants too. Wait.. that should probably just say I love plants. I'm a nerd. What can I say?

I would so grow a Ficus benjamina, if they weren't toxic to cats. I grow a Pachira aquatica instead.
@soberplantguy5 ай бұрын
That's a great plant. As for cats, other than sitting on the ones that are in their way, my cats have zero interest in plants. Even the cool having ones with long cat toy branches 😆

Looking at your Syngonium and noticed that you have her wrapped up. I was told never to put anything against a petiole, only the stem. Is this wrong or am I not seeing your arrangement clearly?
@soberplantguy5 ай бұрын
I just have a piece of twine there that is *really* loose, so loose I can just sort of slide it to keep the plant manageable. I've been doing that with that one, and others ... for ever. No problems to date. Unless you've just jinxed me?
@paxleidig53275 ай бұрын
Well....then I'm gonna try it too!
