Skip Work and Surf! VW Gathering By the Beach: Big Wednesday at San Onofre State Beach 🌊🏄🏼‍♂️

Big Wednesday
It all started when a group of VW/surfers got together in the middle of a week to skip work and go surfing. Big Wednesday has since become a go-to event, where Southern California’s VW and surf lifestyles collide.
From Los Angeles, we headed south on Interstate 5 through San Clemente, the southernmost point in Orange County, and the Pacific Ocean appeared to the right - we were almost in San Onofre.
San Onofre State Beach, on the border of Orange and San Diego Counties, is a state park known worldwide as the Mecca of surf culture. Unlike most beach parks, you can drive your car down a dirt road and onto the sandy beach (the latter and the area welcoming vehicles are separated). It’s one of the few places on the coast where cars can be plopped down under the palm trees that grow on the beach. The scene has not changed much since the old days.
Big Wednesday’s mastermind Rich Kimball picked Wednesday because it was obviously during the middle of the week. If truth be told, it would be less challenging to take Monday or Friday off for most participants - Wednesday takes a more serious effort. So, what gives? It turns out the movie Big Wednesday (starring Gary Busey, Jan-Michael Vincent, and William Katt) inspired Rich. In the beginning, about 20 cars showed up; we now witness close to 150 VWs and surfers on that weekday.

Sat in UK on a dull, cold, drizzling day. You have got to have the ideal, perfect dub drop back location for a gathering. All should be proud of their vehicles. Love it 👌
